Pistons have an open roster spot

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Fri Feb 22, 2013 4:48 am

Current depth chart:

Calderon / Bynum
Knight / Stuckey / English
Singler / Stuckey / Middleton / Maggette
Maxiell / CV / Jerebko
Monroe / (Drummond) / Kravtsov

Should we sign a FA? Either to 10-day contracts or thru the rest of the season

I was looking thru the list of available FAs, and one name stood out as an interesting add-on thru the rest of this season - 24 year old SF Donte Green. Getting him could help push Singler and allow Stuckey to stay primarily at the 2. He's young enough to grow with our main core if he works out too. Low risk, medium reward type addition....as good as we're going to get at this stage of the season.

Other notable names:

C Ben Wallace (of course)
C Hassan Whiteside
SF Bill Walker
C Solomon Alabi
PF Craig Brackins
C Semih Erden
G Jordan Farmar
PF Yi Jianlian
PF DJ White
SF Shawne Williams

Or should we just ride this TANK out thru the rest of the season?

No interest in that group of guys. If anything. I see the Pistons work a buyout of Corey Maggette at this point. I'd rather just offer up minutes to Middleton than sign a wing at this point.

that list is pretty uninspiring.
I'd be happy to get Wallace back to mentor Monroe/Drummond/Slava, but at the end of the day, we have a good big man coach and it's good that Slava is getting minutes with drummond out.

I'd rather let the guys play and look to upgrade in the offseason.

We could use that roster spot and our TPE to add Jordan Crawford. Oh wait...

I'd waive Maggette and sign Greene and Walker to 10 day contracts.

Vege, a couple of questions:

was/is our TPE large enough to cover Crawford's salary?

do you seriously think Washington would have given us Crawford for our TPE?

Yes to both.

A TPE > Barbosa. The TPE ends up being a straight salary dump, instant savings. Whereas Barbosa is an expiring, but they still need to pay him throughout the rest of the season - injured or not.

Yes the TPE was large enough. and yes they dumped Crawford for Barbosa who is injured and is being paid and Collins who is useless and won't see the court even during garbage time. So yeah TPE would save them more money and they did the trade to save money.

So there is absolutely no doubt they would have traded Crawford for our TPE, it's not what I think it's a fact.

Joe doesn't trade for Crawford, people call for him to be fired.

Joe trades for Crawford. Initial excitement is quickly followed by the realization that he's a black hole on offense who chucks us out of close games, same people call for Joe to be fired.

^Crawford would have been a good player coming off our bench, plus he's still on a rookie contract...That seems like nothing but positives to me...

Crawford would not get any PT on this team. We already have enough mediocre guards and he's not any better than Calderon/Knight/Bynum/Stuckey.There was no need to trade for him.

If anything, I wouldve taken a flier on Jeremy Tyler from GSW.

I think we should give a 10 day to Whiteside, and buyout Maggette.

^I'd be willing to give Whiteside a chance. No point in buyout out Maggs though, he's going to expire anyway and there's only around 30 games left.

I think it might be worth it because we can save a little money on the salary cap. Might be worth it to just dump him. He's not playing another game anyways. I'd waive him if we could recoup 2 of the 10 mill he will make this year.

The point of waiving Maggette is to save Gores money and give Maggette the chance to earn his next contract. He won't see the court in Detroit so the classy move is, let the guy try to play somewhere else.

I am pretty sure he will be waived.

What vege said. Give Corey a chance to be "depth" on a good playoff team. Save Gores some money.

After watching tonight's game vs the Pacers, I would endorse buying out Maggette.

Use one open spot for Whiteside - who is younger than Kravtsov by a couple years. \

Use the other spot for SF Donte Green to push Singler and Middleton

Calderon / Knight
Knight / Stuckey / English
Singler / Middleton / Green
Monroe / Jerebko / CV
Drummond / Whiteside / Kravtsov
