Edelman in 2004
"Having got the funding through gives us significant transfer funds over the next two to three years and beyond. We will have much larger transfer funds available than we have ever had before. You saw some of that with the purchase of Jose Reyes, which was a transfer we could only have done with the funding arrangements in place. That is the start of what we can begin to afford on a net basis."

PHW in 2010
"It is our policy that we give the manager a transfer budget, which includes the ability to use all the money from player sales. He will get the money no matter how much we got from selling a player."

Edelman in 2007
"Arsène is not one to go and spend huge amounts of money on players. But if he wanted to do something of that magnitude there's no reason we couldn't get that to happen. We can do it. It's just a matter of what Arsène's strategy is. There is money available for Arsène in the summer, I think we've got to wait until the summer and see what he wants to do."

Gazidis in 2012
"We can pay bigger salaries and can invest more in transfer fees. How we make those decisions will be based on a manager whose judgement, over the years, has been shown to be outstanding. There’s nobody I would like to be thinking about those types of decision more than Arsène Wenger. We have got a lot of money coming in. We also kept some powder dry, so we have got the ability to invest if our manager finds the right opportunities in January."

Dein "There was always a budget for transfers with the new stadium in place. Nothing changes. We do have money available."

either these guys are all lying or wenger is the one that refuses to spend and not the board. but I dont know who to believe really , We will only be successfull again if we get rid of the 2nd rate "4th place is like a trophy" mentality

Heck, if he's not going to spend big money, I'd even be happy with him giving away pennies (deadwood players) for free rather than all of this bs trying to sell them for nickels and then using his inability to sell them as a reason for not bringing anyone in.

"We will spend big (again) because we had restricted finances because we had built the stadium and had to pay that back. You look at any club who has done that, and they have gone down (in performance).
We stayed at the top level, yes without winning the Premier League, but we were always at the top level.
Now we have come out in a much stronger position financially again, so we can spend."

Wenger, recently

Again, I don't know for sure either way. Only the board and Wenger do, and it's the board who decide whether he stays or goes. I just don't think Wenger has anything to gain by not spending money he could.

If you're talking about the one in the Sun it was 44 medals since they left. But, includes Diarra (would played 7 games for Arsenal) and Seb Larsson (who played 3 games for Arsenal) as 'former Arsenal stars'

Not to mention, that list also included Freddie Ljungberg winning the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with the Seattle Sounders...

Daily Mail said 75 actually. They do include minor league/cup competitions but I believe all of them legit trophies bigger than the Emirates cup at least.

That said, it's just a trivial fact more than anything else

Good point, Frank Simek, Stephen O'Donnel, and Matthew Connoly really made the right decision in leaving Arsenal for greener pastures

If it's the FA cup, maybe (definitely not the Capital One Cup). But that's really about it...although I think they'll always prioritize the Champions League or the Premier League ahead of it.

I don't even understand the logic that players leaving Arsenal and winning domestic cups with teams that wouldn't even finish near the top of the EPL is counted as a knock against Arsenal.

It's kinda funny how the Arsenal haters use that as a knock against us too. The Red Bulls beat PSG... And that same Red Bulls team (in form and in the middle of their season) couldn't even score a goal against our team in the middle of our off-season... Bartley had to do it for them. I love revisionist history and the fact that we never hear about how PSG got beaten by an MLS team, only about how "Arsenal lost the Emirates Cup to an MLS team."

Edit: Ok, I'm an idiot. PSG beat Boca Juniors 3-0. Red Bulls beat PSG 1-0...

Yeah, there's only a couple players where it's actually relevant, i.e. RvP

Otherwise it's just journalism with an agenda. Who cares if a bunch of former Arsenal youth teamers who never made the first team won the league two championship with Carlisle

Pretty clearly, this whole exercise says a lot more about how much time's passed since Arsenal last won a trophy than the quality of the players who have left the club. It doesn't even include RVP.

Its funny because it was a tournament organized by an Arsenal sponsor to promote the team and Arsenal still managed to lose it. No one said Red Bulls are better team or Arsenal went full pelt, but considering the circumstances you need to admit its a good joke.
