How far will STAR fall?

Star Lotulelei has been diagnosed with a heart condition.

Lotulelei, a defensive tackle out of Utah, had been a projected top-five pick.

Lotulelei's left ventricle is pumping at 44 percent efficiency, whereas a normal range is 55-70 percent

I can't imagine he falls too far. He's dominant.

It depends,
But i see something like this dropping someone till the 2nd round or maybe even 3rd..
even if he is dominant, if cant play, he cant play.

He won't fall as far as Jarvis Jones. Hard to see Star falling beyond Dallas or Chicago at 20 if they let Melton walk. Jones will be lucky to stay in the top 20, could fall into the 2nd round.

I'm not a big fan of taking a 4.5-sack, 8 TFL, 25 tackle per year nose tackle in the top 25, and IMO that's Star's production ceiling. Certainly not when the best pass rusher on the team is Austen Lane, who has about the same ceilings.

I love Sharrif Floyd to JAX but I like Sheldon Richardson more. Bigger, a little stouter, a little more active more often. I actually have Dion Jordan mocked there right now but Floyd was strongly in consideration for the Gator angle.

Isn't he already back to working out? If so, I can't imagine its that serious and he'll remain a top-20 pick.

He hasn't been diagnosed with anything. Hes fine and will be a top 10 pick - my guess is at #3 to Oakland.

They are testing him to see if this is a progressive condition, an anomaly, or if it's something he's had and played with and can continue to play with.

I have a different heart condition that limits me from doing heavy weight lifting or running beyond 5K (aortic valve regurgitation, if you must know) and I can tell when it flares up and have learned how to control the symptoms with resting, breathing, and hyperhydrating. I don't know if that's the case with Star's condition but I strongly suspect he can tell when it's not right. The condition also might explain why he often went prolonged stretches without doing anything but standing at the line and dancing lightly with two blockers when Utah played him over 90% of snaps. At minimum, he should not be playing more than 50% of a team's snaps with a heart anomaly like that. IMO that limits his value and I suspect he falls because of that.

But I still think Jarvis Jones falls further for an extremely underpublicized reason: he'll be a 24 year old rookie. That means he's got limited developmental upside. Same with Margus Hunt, who is 25 already. Teams are getting increasingly wary of older prospects after Danny Watkins and Brandon Weeden haven't lit the NFL world on fire as overaged rookies. Honestly it bothers them more than it bothers me, but I was way too high on both of those prospects and respect the line of thinking.

Not to go off on a complete tangent, but professionally I learned a lot from Danny Watkins. I've been in this business for 9 years now and he is one of my biggest gaffes. Why? Because I interviewed him a couple of times and absolutely loved the guy. He's the kind of guy you want to go to Vegas with or hang out with at a sports bar. I know his agent pretty well and I got wrapped up in what he was selling me too. I let my personal feelings get in the way of my professional responsibility to honestly evaluate his skills. Because of that (and other reasons) I don't interview guys anymore. I still talk to them off the record, but I keep it more professional and not three hours at a Waffle House after I've had a couple of cocktails 8-)

Isn't that sometimes the sign of a good nose? They are not necessarily racking up all the stats because their job is to take on doubles and triples and occupy blockers to free up their teammates to make the plays? I'm pretty sure Haloti Ngata doesn't have super great stats, but his value is through the roof because of the attention he demands.
