Can Casey win COY?
Don't get me wrong, I was very disappointed in Dwane Casey for almost the entire season, with his questionable rotations, and especially when he played players like Alan Anderson, Gray and other vets over our young-ins.
In 2006-2007, Sam Mitchell won the coach of the year award by simply making the playoffs and getting 3rd seed in the east, in a weak east conference.
Would it be possible for Casey to win it this year if the Raptors make the playoffs? I also think the Raptors will make history too. I don't recall any team making the playoffs after a 4-19 start.

I could see it happening. The main reason coming down to what you said at the end, and thats the 4-19 start. Making the playoffs after a start like that will def give casey some recognition when it comes to choosing COY.

That will be the biggest joke in the NBA history. Or the biggest disaster in Raps history since he will be extended for 5 more years.

Re: Can Casey win COY?
Mitchell should never have won it, he rode BC's roster makeover, coupled with not missing his two best players, (Bosh and Mo Pete) for a good chunk, to the improved record. We were annihilated in the playoffs by an inferior NJ team with a superior coach. They had three stars, but the rest of their roster was a joke. Mikki Moore as your starting C? Enough said.
I think Popovich will win if SA can hit the .800 level to end the season. Vinny Del Negro is in the running, and Spoelstra might get some love too. Mark Jackson could see some love for the improvement in GS's record and possible playoff appearance.

Nope. Credit for the turnaround will go to Gay, not DC.
Also I'm still baffled with DC's strategy and what he intends to do with his rotations. At least with Smitch we knew the strategy was mo shats.
But hey we're winning.

Only if the voters didn't actually watch many Raptors games.

I understand most of you, including me, thinks that Casey was a terrible coach this year, and he doesn't deserve any recognition. But the NBA will always make questionable decisions whether we like it or not.
That's why I think Casey could get some recognition if the Raptors can make the playoffs.
Obviously the entire reason for this success is the acquisition of Rudy Gay. Casey doesn't deserve any credit.
But that's not how the NBA will see it. They will look at our record from the beginning of the season ( 4-19 ), and then they will look at the standings ( 8th seed ), and they will be surprised to see the improvement, and the way we turned the season around.
Point is, Dwane Casey was not a good coach this year, but he will still be credited as one.

Re: Can Casey win COY?
No. With all his stupid mistakes like letting Anderson chuck all season, illogical time outs, playing Aaron Gray instead of JV, watching leads diminish without correcting any players for mistakes, playing small ball in crunch time where rebounding is crucial especially against big teams, subbing out players who start getting hot, leave players in that have been playing terrible all game, not running any specific plays for our star players, not being able to draw up a decent play after time outs, you know what. There are too many damn mistakes to list that he constantly makes EVERY game. He won't win the COY and he shouldn't even be in contention for it to be honest. His coaching is fairly bad and he consistently gets credit for wins because players bail him out.

Forgot to add. Bryan Colangelo will also get the credit, obviously because he brought in Rudy Gay.
That's what I'm worried about this summer, whether Bryan Colangelo gets re-signed for another 3+ years.

If this ever happened the award would officially become meaningless in the NBA. Turrible coach. Absolutely turrible.

Would that mean BC would get GM of the year for the move he pulled off ?

If they look at record alone he may have a shot. If they see that a lot of the close games we lost (and some we won) were close because he left bad lineups on the floor until our leads were gone, he won't have a shot.

Unless Chicago falls off a cliff and misses the playoffs this year, Thibodeau should have COY locked up.

It would be a travesty and a mockery of the whole award (more so than it has already been).
Most years, it should be Pop or Sloan. This year I have him tied with Frank Vogel. That's a man who knows how to coach professionally (benching Psycho T after that incident).

I know what you mean. Most of us see it this way as well. But the NBA will not look at it this way, because they don't follow every game like we do. And there's no statistics that can prove that Casey is a bad coach.
The 8th seed is the only statistic that can solely dictate if Casey is a good coach or a bad one.

Re: Can Casey win COY?
Honestly he could, alot of times CoY goes to the team with the most dramatic turnaround. If the Raptors make 8th, Casey would definitely be in consideration considering the terrible start. (Even if he was the main cause for that terrible start and not the main cause for this turnaround)

Does anyone know if there was any teams who made the playoffs after an awful start to the season?
I honestly can't think of any teams who had a 4-19 start.

I remember Jack Armstrong once mentioned it on air. Only one team had done it, not sure who.

Because he was being too tough on golden boy and not giving him minutes.
