Alex Smith Traded - To THE CHIEFS

Not exactly surprising, but it's news nonetheless.

Also, from@ryanohalloran
#jaguars GM Dave Caldwell says via text "not us" who has deal in place for SF QB Alex Smith.

Kansas City maybe?

It's not JAX, it's not CLE, it's not PHI. Oakland can't afford him. The Jets can't afford him.

That leaves BUF and KC. Lots of people are pointing at KC, and that is the obvious call. The Buffalo angle is being underplayed though. SF will need a veteran backup, and they can squeeze Fitzpatrick's deal in if he agrees to restructure. Fitz and a 2nd round pick gets it done. That's a big leap for SF though to take on that deal.

Trading for another quarterback would basically be admitting that they made a mistake with Palmer. Raiders won't do that this soon.

You will hear the announcement of a restructured deal for Carson Palmer by the end of the week. If you don't hear that, you will hear him being released before March 12. I've heard from trusted source they are close to a redo on his deal.

He's definitely not worth the $13 million salary, but I think he has some leverage because so many teams need an NFL quarterback of his caliber (at a reduced rate, of course).

If they release him he will be the Week One starter in Arizona, I guarantee it.

I assume the Niners would try to send him out of the NFC West. But I would LOVE it if he ended up in Zona. I bet the Cards at 100/1 to win next year, figuring they're a QB away from being good.

For those odds, I'd definitely throw $20 on it, especially since Arians might be able to surprise people now that he has his own team.

This could actually make the Chiefs worth a damn, if they don't sh*t the bed in the draft. I know we still have the pro days to go through, but I'm assuming this should make Luke Joeckel a lock to go #1.

Sounds like it's for two 2nds. Great haul for the Niners.

That's a lot to pay for mediocrity.

9ers have 15 picks this year, 5 of the top 93.

And a couple stockpiled for next year, too.

You know...i don't understand Raiders fans...I mean you guys have been complaining about Palmer since the deal...why don't you guys sit back and think about who would be starting if he was not around...Pryor? Leinart?...I mean come on look at their squad...DMC is always hurt...Ford has been hurt non stop...DHB is a bust...their defense is in shambles...quit pointing the finger at Palmer....it goes far deeper than him.

A 2nd round pick for someone who didn't even get any attention last year in the FA market? Yes please! Now trade that pick for Revis!

San Francisco will receive Kansas City’s second-round pick in April’s draft – No. 34 overall – and a conditional third-round pick in 2014, according to the San Jose Mercury News’ Tim Kawakami. The third-round pick would become a second-rounder if the Chiefs win a certain number of games in 2013. If the deal is finalized, the 49ers will have at least five picks in the first three rounds of the 2013 draft, including Nos. 31 and 34 overall. They would also have 15 picks overall, a haul which includes three compensatory selections.

San Francisco’s rookies will join an already loaded roster. Nineteen of the 49ers’ 22 starters in the Super Bowl, including eight 2012 Pro Bowl picks, are under contract for next season. Of those 19 starters, only four will be 30 or older on Sept. 1.

Sure, it makes sense for the 49ers because they are trying to rack up draft picks and they already have a QB better than Smith, but in any other situation, wouldn't he be worth more?

Look at his numbers before Harbaugh got there and then ask yourself that same question again.
