Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
What Portland is doing with a D-League bench is pretty remarkable. I'd much rather have the draft pick now. At least it'll have a shot at moving into the top 3.
Humble yourself.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
On one hand I'd rather have the pick next year in the loaded draft. However I also see Portland improving a good bit next year if they can get a half decent bench, thus putting the pick somewhere in the 20s.
Heck, maybe we can get it this year and trade it to another bottom-feeder for their 2014 pick.
1. Shabazz
2. Beal
3. McLemore
4. Lamb
5. Oladipo
6. Smart
7. Waiters
8. Ross

I'm not against the idea, but can you imagine the mass of cynical outrage?
"MJ is such a tight ass away he traded his top 3 pick just to save money!"
Personally if the scouts had the same opinion with you in regards to potential then I would go for it.

i'd be more worried about it if they were in the east. in the west i still see the top teams being good again next year. lakers will improve, wolves will improve (assuming they dont trade love and re-sign pek), houston will improve since they have a ton of cap space and so much youth, dallas could go either way, but i assume they will sign a good player this summer rather than blowing it up and trading dirk. utah is the only team i could see sliding.
i think its more likely portland finishes in the bottom 12 again and we dont get that pick until 2015 or 2016.

I don't think Portland will improve as much as people think. They will lose Hickson, and although hes been hreat in his rookie year I don't believe Lillard has a tremendous amount of upside.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
The fact that people are struggling to rank all these SGs shows that shooting guard is a fungible position relative to C. There just aren't that many skilled 7 footers. SG is certainly the "sexier" position from which to choose, but maybe we should hone in on a big?

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
notice i didnt even attempt to rank these guys. i have no clue, other than beal near the top. i dont see how anyone can state with certainty one guard over another from the top 4 this year, at least not yet. hopefully we will see some separation in march as well as draft workouts, or else it will come down to team needs or personality.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
ESPN finally posted Chad Ford's randomized draft machine generator. I played around with it numerous times and never saw one scenario where Willie Cauley-Stein was taken above 13. Most spins of the wheel had him out of the top 14. I'm starting to get excited about the POR pick. I think he can be a Tyson Chandler type of center 3 years down the road. We're going to develop plenty of scoring during that time.

I'm a fan. This was my hope as well - land Bazz or McLemore with our top pick, get POR at 13/14 and grab Stein. I have a feeling he's going to creep up into the 7-10 range though by draft night if he just continues to deliver at the rate he has since Noel went down. He's actually fundamentally more sound than Noel right now, and is a very legit 7' (listed as over 7'1" in shoes). Obviously not the presence that Noel is, but seems to be a very solid piece - would prefer him over Len, for sure. He really, really could stand to stay in school another year, but...will take this convo to the draft thread.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
I agree Cauley-Stein is a project but this team is wide open at center. He could get plenty of playing time here and grow more on this level than he would in college against smaller, weaker opponents. I think Charlotte is the perfect situation for him. We don't need instant production out of center but by the time we creep out of tank mode, he will be well-groomed and ready to contribute to a contender. If we're going to tank next year, we might as well use that year to produce a big prospect.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
Portland has fallen to 12 and the Mavs are improving fast with Dirk.
Honestly I think the POR pick is becoming a sleeper pick and should gain value next year. Portland will lose Hickson while the teams below them will improve. Minnesota played much of their year without Love and Rubio missed time. They're also adding a high draft pick to the mix. Philly played without Bynum and will have cap space to add a big free agent, possibly Hickson? And the Raptors added Gay late and have played better with him.
POR could easily be a bottom-10 team moving forward.
As for Detroit? They're 1 game away from being a bottom-3 team.
The Bobcats hold a lot of leverage in the next 2 drafts.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread
I'm a Blazer's fan and was wondering if the Bobcats board would go for a deal where
Portland would simply allow Charlotte to have the 11 or 12 pick in the 13' draft
I'd personally would allow the Bobcats to have the pick if they took Joel Freeland
off of our hands, which would give us another $3 million of cap space in free
agency.
