How long have you been a Grizzlies fan?

Post#1 » by Basketball MVP » Sun Feb 24, 2013 8:14 am

I became a fan in the 2009 season. Loved the duo of Mayo & Gay, but it didn't really work out I'm afraid.

I've been a fan since the move to Memphis. I've always been a diehard hoops fan, but only a casual NBA fan until the Grizzlies rolled into town.

It was right after Hubie Brown became coach.

They used to re-broadcast the games on PAX-50 at like 2A.M. It had been a few years since I really followed the NBA, but I would get off work late at night and I didn't have cable. So there really wasn't much else to do.

I started getting really attached to the team and saw a lot of potential in players like Pau, Mike Miller, Shane Battier, etc.

I got a little pissed off when they traded away these players for what I perceived as garbage (though in retrospect we got great value in return for all of them except Mike Miller but only because we traded away Love in the same deal).

I only vaguely followed the team until they made the deal for Randolph, which signaled to me that they were serious about winning.

^^BC50 never had the chance to play in Memphis.

Here's another memorable photo.

I was already a NBA junkie and an Orlando Magic fan(20yrs to this day). As for my history with the Grizzlies. Since they moved here, and it was the first time this city had a NBA team. It was safe to say that I would follow suit and become a fan of the hometown team.

Still remember when former TV commentator Matt Devlin used to say "DEEP FRIED" whenever someone would shoot the 3ball on the play.

I've been a fan since the expansion years in Vancouver. It's been a tough road since then, but sticking with this team has paid off.

Michael Dickerson is still my all-time favorite Grizzly for reference.

Just for fun I'll relate a story that I've posted before, but not for a long while.

I was lucky enough one game in Vancouver to be sitting a couple rows back from the baseline just off to the side of the basket. The game was against Los Angeles and Shaq was in his prime when he was abusing every player who tried to match up against him. Big Country went against Shaq, the refs put their whistles in their pockets when they went head to head in the post, and it was one of the most physical one on one bouts I've ever seen in basketball. Picture those National Geographic TV specials where they have two giant walrus' clashing and the body fat just ripples as they bash each other in a fight. Shaq trying to back Big Country down and Reeves throwing everything he has back.

I can honestly say I've never seen anyone play Shaq in his prime as tough as Bryant Reeves did that day ( it was a rare Saturday or Sunday noon start ). Let's not forget that he scored over 40 points on a couple of occasions, and scored 30 or more a handful of times. It was only once he blew his knee out that he let his conditioning go downhill and his career never recovered. And of course it coincided right after he signed his 5 year, $55mil contract so he looked like a big bust.

But people forget his early years.

As for Michael Dickerson, he might have been pound for pound the strongest player in the league. He was known as a gym rat that was intensely into weight lifting and broke every strength record Vancouver had despite only being around 205 lbs. He also had an extremely high arc to his shot and there were times when I was sure he shot an airball only to see it softly drop through the center of the net, almost coming straight down from three point range. I got to meet him on a couple of occasions and he was a very soft spoken guy.

And I met Abdur-Rahim once during his rookie season and he was shy to the point of looking like a deer in the headlights. He didn't really want to be the leader or talk much to the media despite being the team's star, yet on the court there wasn't a single player that I saw ever outwork him and play with such determination and heart other than Antonio McDyess.

Here's what I'm thinking. I was wondering if the Grizz organization could create a segment on retired former Grizz players who made their impact known on the hardwood during their time as a Grizzly.
