You're arguing that it may be too expensive to overpay a Center. Look at what we've gone through without a true Center. What else are you planning to spend the money on? You and I REALLY disagree on Ellis, so I won't deal with him, but would Iguodala make us a champion? Is he that much more valuable to us than Lou Williams/Korver/Jenkins? No, he wouldn't and no, he isn't.
But, if we cannot get Howard and if we cannot help HOU get Howard (and get Asik for our trouble) and if we cannot overpay for Pekovic, then I'd have to say we'd be forced to look at Jefferson. Or maybe we could use our capspace to take on a major-salaried Center in trade. For example, failing all else, if we could trade capspace for Gasol (for one season) we should think about it.
I'm arguing that we don't need to waste monies on anything except retaining our own guys and getting a Center. Keeping Smith and Korver with the players we already have coming back and adding a good, true Center would make us a dangerous team.

My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

You for get that the Hawks can offer two max contracts and still have change left over.
by the way, Gasol is a Power Forward, not a Center.

Gasol can be all the PF you want, the fact is that he's a better C than most of the real C.
He played more C than PF in almost all seasons, and more important, have a better impact on defense/offense playing at C than PF.
So I won't forget Gasol in any search of a C.
If there was no injury problem, I would want Bynum or Howard first, I prefer Bynum but would choose Howard because even if we would need to take care of his ego, and that he's older, he would certainly sell more tickets and expand the fan base.
If you can't get Bynum or Howard, then I would seriously consider Gasol with guys like Asik, Pekovic, Lopez... and for sure Jefferson. Just checking one stat, he's the only of these guys having a negative on/off court difference, while being on a winning team. The other have all a positive difference, even Pekovic who plays in a loosing team (but not in garbage time against opponent bench guys).

I'll take an expiring Pau Gasol next season to play center for us, if we don't have a guy besides Horford slotted in there already.

Outside of a Josh sign-and-trade, what assets do we have to even match salaries on a Pau trade?
I want him on our team soooooo bad, I would've traded Josh for Pau even if he was still hurt.
Gasol+Horford= best frontcourt in the NBA.
Their sizes, skillsets, athleticism all complement each other perfectly.

For this time I agree with Amer on korver , not manu cuz there is no chance but in my view we just need to sign Al Jefferson no matter what, resign josh n Jeff, resign Korver n Ivan draft a backup sf and pg , also if possible get tony Allen too so we would be set C- Al Jefferson-Zaza. PF- Al Horford-Ivan SF- Josh, rookie sf. SG- korver, tony Allen. PG Teague, rookie pg or Jenkins Looks Like the team for me.

Plan A is getting a Center.
Plan B is getting a Center.
Plan C is getting a Center.
Plan D is getting a Center.
Plan PDQ* is getting a Center.
*Pretty Doggone Quick.
Then you mean the plan is to get Dwight Howard. No other Center that is an upgrade from Horford at Center will be available

Why is everyone so obsessed with Jefferson? He has a nice offensive game but his defense is non-existent. This would be a terrible pickup and put us right back on the treadmill. Jefferson will never lead a team to title contention.
If we can't get Howard or Pau, I think we are best off keeping Smith and Horford and signing a 2 or 3 that can get their own shot. Bring in a defensive-minded Center that will allow us to slow down the 4 or 5 7' centers in the league that can actually score.
