Your Feedback Wanted: And 1 and Browser Issues

Post#1 » by Howard Mass » Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:23 pm

RealGM Users,

As I have been hinting at on various RealGM Forums, we have BIG things planned for 2013.

In the coming weeks and months, we plan to roll some of these things out.

However, we need your feedback on two things that we would like to fix.

1) The "And 1 Button": Many of you did not like this feature when it was implemented.

Our Question: How can we make "The "And 1" button better/not an eyesore for all of you.

2) Browser Issues- We have had reports of users seeing RealGM different with Different Browsers.

We really want to fix this and are asking all of you to provide examples of troubles that you have had in terms of viewing RealGM, your browser freezing up or any other issues.

Please tell us about these issues so we can fix them.

Once again, your Feedback would be greatly appreciated here as we want to fix these along with some other things to make our Forums a better experience for all.

We have some great things rolling out in the coming weeks and months that we cannot wait to share with all of you.

For now, we would really appreciate any feedback that you may have.

Thanks Again!
R.I.P. Dharam Raghubir (A.K.A. Magnumt)

For the and 1, you should let us see which users liked our post....because watching how many and 1's my post got without knowing who liked it doesn't really matter to me. For that reason I never use it.

The And 1 should appear immediately instead of resetting the page, or sometimes setting you back to page 1 of a thread. Makes me not want to use it. There should also be a running count of the And 1's you received under your avatar.

1. And 1 - The suggestion above (showing names of who likes your post) is a good one. Also, if there is a way to "highlight" the post with the most "And 1's." it would be great. I know MSNBC does something interesting with a similar feature, in which the top post is immediately moved to the top. I know this is something that would be nearly impossible to implement in a forum style, but a good idea might be to figure out a way to highlight the best post of a thread. Whether it's changing the color of the cell or putting a gold star (Deadspin used to do this). Also, I really dislike the fact that the And 1 feature bounces me back to page 1.

2. Browser - I use Google Chrome and it's a pain to use quick reply. I don't know if I'm the only one. It's also awkwardly placed alllll the way at the bottom of the page. It's just uncomfortable (I know from experience with phpbb that the quick reply mod is a real pain). I know it's hard to do with PHPBB but a "live thread" would be a neat thing to have for game threads. Would definitely increase the activity.

Also, not sure if Browser related but I routinely get Sql errors browsing with Chrome.

I just don't see why the And 1 is necessary at all. If it was up to me I would just ditch it completely.

to continue this line of thinking - maybe use a slightly different background color for the post with the most and 1's. i also agree with whoever wrote it is annoying to use the and 1 which then reloads the entire page and sends you back to the first page of the thread. this function should be more light and responsive - otherwise it is just easier to quote somebody's post and write +1.

also, there has to be some value for this function if you want it to work. just to have some (infrequently used) number under a certain post doesn't makes that big of a difference. especially as the thread goes on and you don't revisit your older post to even know you got an and 1. maybe change the and 1 to positive and negative like in nbadraft.net? just a thought.

on a slightly different topic - it would also be nice if the limit for quotes be higher than 3. quoting a response that already have quotes is a frequent way to continue a conversation and it gets annoying if you have to start deleting parts of the post you are answering to just because of this limit - it just slows you down.

Meh I didn't even know. It's just terribly implemented. They should make it visible without having to click.

Just take example of hiphop forums where you just ''thank'' a post and your name automatically appears under...without the page refreshing or anything.

For the And 1 button, if it is to be kept, there should be a way to see who liked the post, and possibly even a counter under the avatars and information showing how many And 1s you've gotten over your "posting career".

As for browsers, I use Chrome and have had no problems.

I just tested on david5773's post, and Hermes is right: Just click on the number next to the button and a list of users appears.

That said, I don't think it's that great of an idea. Probably best to just dump it. Having a running total of "likes" under peoples' usernames will just lead to circlejerking and padding.

Having an And1 and a negative And1 (Minus1? Less1? Foul?) that is visibly tallied in the post and recorded as a total in a person's profile could do a few great things. One, it could encourage people to compete in a contest of who-is-posting-better-content, a goal you have been striving for, better content. Two, it basically robs post-padding of its power, since the new metric would be quality not quantity. Hmmm...metric. Perhaps install a feature that literally makes a metric out of it, the percentage of one's posts since the feature was reborn that received a certain number of And1's, the total number overall, an efficiency stat that divides And1's by Fouls or something, a leaderboard (sub-collated by team, to instill a sense that what you post reflects not just on you but on your fanbase), maybe some kind of free "end-of-season" rewards, records for most And1's for a single post and poster, awards like Rookie of the Year, MVP. An all-star "game" in the form of a thread only the best posters can participate in, as determined by fan voting or a combination of that and the stats. A hall-of-fame for the best of the best, with posters who graduate to writing Wiretap articles given special consideration, special "exhibits" on classic threads. (The thought of finally having a place to honor the few all-time regulars who've passed away actually chokes me up a little.) An accompanying fantasy league, lmfao. Three, the sheer fun and boost in the fake feeling of productivity this would all engender, message boarding as a sport of good thinking and good will, would just be awesome, sure to pull in more traffic and maybe even positive media mentions. Help get the ludic revolution off the ground, RealGM. Give people some virtual skin to put into the game. Gamify this world. /TED

Interesting, I didn't even know some of this stuff.

For the and 1. I don't have any good suggestions for now.

I appreciate you guys trying to improve the site but Id rather you focus on keeping the site from crashing at the trade deadline. The and1 button is a gimmick and if its giving anybody any issues whatsoever youd be better served to just dump the thing entirely. I dont even notice if anyone actually uses it.

This. It didn't change anything. This is a discussion forum. Circumventing discussion is a bad thing, even if that means preventing someone from simply agreeing with another poster without feeling the need to write an explanation why. Not that you're enforcing such a policy, I just don't see the problem with it.

It was a good idea in theory, but not in practice. If only 10% or less of the forum even uses it (which appears the be the case), it's not really serving any purpose.

Along those lines (although this hasn't been discussed), I also don't care for the idea of rep points or red dots like other forums use. It turns whats supposed to be uninfluenced discussion into pandering for votes.

Wouldn't it be ironic if everybody And 1'ed your post? :D

I like the And 1 feature. If you don't like it, can't you just ignore it?

As far as features, I agree with the poster who said giving an And 1 shouldn't have to reload the entire page.

Also, how about letting a user track two things:

1) A list of which posts they've And 1'ed
2) A list And 1's received (from whom, and for which post)

these lists could go somewhere on the user control panel.
