Starting to get worried about Teague

Post#1 » by Rip2137 » Tue Feb 26, 2013 2:19 pm

Because except for a patricularly tough December, his numbers have been progressively sliding up as the season goes on, up to 18-9.5 in February(10 games) and it looks like he has put it together.

SOME team is going to throw alot of money at him. So what would you match?

If I had to choose, i would say bringing back Teague is more important than bringing back Josh. An aggressive Teague is a game changer offensively and honestly, i think this team is going to need one. But part of the offseason plans had to be Teague not getting more than 7-8 mill a year and having alot of cap space after signing him...

Now I think 7-8 is dreaming.

i don't mind in over paying Teague if Ferry misses out on Chris Paul.

Another option would be to trade Teague for a high draft pick, to a team like the Magic, Kings, or Hornets, who need a PG in the worst way.

I think Vasquez is the guy in New Orleans. I was thinking of that but then I noticed that most teams that are horrible a surprisingly solid at the point. Its the in between teams that need a point.

from Cleveland to Washington and Detroit, most bad teams have decent point guards...some really good ones.

The scary thing is Dallas needs a point guard in the worse way, will have the cap space and are willing spenders.

Teague's performance during the playoffs will go along way in determining his value. But man, the Hawks are really clicking on the offensive end.

I can definitely see us having some competition signing him this summer.

I think the bar that's been set for reasonable contract vs production is AL. Horford is getting $12 million per season, and is much more accomplished than Teague. But JT0 knows he's a building block for this team and is likely part of its long term future.

I see Teague getting (and accepting) a deal in that range. Maybe frontload the deal a bit to prevent other teams without the capspace from matching.

ATL has had trouble attracting NBA free agents in the past, and rightfully so. But for a young, black millionaire this is one of the ideal places to live. I read his Twitter updates and have to laugh at some of the juvenile antics and comments he makes. But I think that mentality plays into our favor.

We have more capspace than NY, LA.

We have a better team than Dallas.

We are a more attractive city than Charlotte or Orlando.

And I believe Teague really likes playing and living here. This is definitely a valid concern. Ferry has to give him the AL Horford treatment in regards to getting a deal done. Not allow him to go find his own deal and feel unwanted like we did with Josh's Restricted Free Agency.

If we lose Teague, I say find a one year stop gap(Devin Harris potentially), and go after Bledsoe, or skip the stop gap and go after Bledsoe from the jump.

Unless we get Chris Paul to sign, (which we should have drafted him n we all know how that turned out) , we need to pay Jeff for what he's worth because us fans from the last place Hawks teams of past know how important the point guard position is, remember speedy claxton, tony delk anyone.

I'm a big fan of Teague, just as much as Smoove, Korver, and Horford's contract, and i have no problem in making Teague a franchise PG and possibly over paying him, because i think he could make a couple of all star games in the next 5 years......

But, if Dwight says "I will only play for the Hawks if you also offer Chris Paul a max deal", then i'm going for it, regardless how much i like Teague.

The Hawks have so much cap space, and they have to spend it on someone. I just don't think he's going. Dan Ferry is a one of the 5 Spurs outposts around the NBA, he doesn't do anything stupid. I'd be surprised if Teague left to be honest, or left without value back in return.

The Hawks have alot of cap space, but if some pulls a Jeremy Lin with him or even nuttier, give him close to his max, outright, a decision will have to be made.

Could Devin be the backup If Teague bolts?

Thoughts?

We would then have to spend on another point guard of starter quality because Harris is GOING to miss games. So the question would be what's cheaper, Jeff or Harris and his backup.

fair point.

Signing Tyreke Evans (in the event Teague leaves) could provide us the depth at both PG & SG that we'd need.

WOW! These guys are playing great b ball right now. I really cant see Ferry letting both Smoove and Teague go. Atleast one will stick around.

Think about what you're saying OP

You're actually worried that we may finally have a point guard?

Teague is a player that almost defines our ceiling. If he turns into an all-star we can pretty much hang with any team in the league

My worry is that Teague is going to get offered a MUCH bigger deal than the plans could have been. I realistically could see Dallas offering him his max. He is going to cost us at least 10-11 million now vs a realistic deal of 7-8 mill before the season. I can say with 100% certainty that none of you would have thought Jeff was going to be taking that much cap space.

I am FINE with resigning him, but again, what is the limit? If you are going to make a run for Chris Paul and Chris drags his feet, you risk alienating your current point guard and give a window for others to offer him a deal.

As it stands one of those BIG freeagents that you sign this year will have to be Jeff Teague now instead of getting Teague, another guy and another guy.

Thats all.
