Playoff success always factor into consideration of merit. How much of a factor depends considerably.

I would prefer thinking about management success with respect to other factors beyond their control. The world certainly is not perceived objectively and certainly NBA management is not contract bridge, so it's much more difficult to judge how well people have played their hand given the quality of their hand.

But still, it is fun to think about. I don't think you can consider Houston as one of the best run organizations in sports yet, simply because we were in a western conference purgatory for a long time, where as the Spurs have been dealt very good hands, but also have also played them properly. Ditto for the Lakers, and to by diminishing degrees, Chicago, Dallas, Boston and Utah. So we can't be considered a perennial name brand just yet. In that regard, you gotta have at least a 10 year run.

But from 2009 to now, without going over the cap, without tanking, the way we get to where we are today, is remarkable. Especially in the last 24 months, our team has went from subtle and entertaining to a winning, exciting product. If we get to the conference finals by 2014, this team will be a text book example on every sports management course for years to come. There is no way the Houston Rockets can't be considered as one of the better organizations _right now_.
