Punishments are in

Post#1 » by chube » Thu Feb 28, 2013 2:43 am

Roy gets 1 game (as does David Lee)
Lance Stephenson, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry each fined $35k.

Roy has reportedly offered to pay Lance's fine for being a good teammate and I guess not feeling his fine legit. Love Hibbert being a good teammate from beginning to end.

Little surprised David West wasn't fined and I would've liked to have seen Jarrett Jack fined too. A couple of his shoves helped send the altercation to the bench.

I've just repeatedly watched the one minute clip that's associated with the ESPN article on the suspensions. It's only about 20 seconds of it that show the whole thing. Honestly, at the point where Hibbert and Lee exchanged shoves it probably would have just ended and been T's and that's it, but Curry seemed like the one that made it blow up by trying to get in there and separate people starting with Roy. It looked more like a tackle, but I don't think that was the intent.

Watching a bunch of times, I really didn't see anyone that was doing anything particularly malicious on either team. It's just one of those "heat of the moment" things. I don't even understand why Lee got a suspension at all actually. I get the Hibbert one since he shoved Curry twice, but I don't know what you expect him to do otherwise when I guy keeps grabbing him.

I keep reading people's opinions on it and they say David West came in shoving and throwing people, but I didn't notice that in the angle I saw. It looked like he came into the fray pretty late and pushed away the one Warrior (I don't recall who) that was still tangled up with a Pacer player and then he was just barking at his own guys.

All the punishments seem a bit arbitrary. I don't know how they separated the guys that got fined from the ones that didn't. It's all kind of a slap on the wrist anyway so it doesn't really matter.

I'm with you, I don't know what else Roy was supposed to do to defend himself. It was unfortunate that it resulted in Curry on the ground twice. I do agree that it seemed like Curry was trying to play peacemaker, but just did a horrible job and instead of just separating, he tried to wrap up Roy. Guys can do that to their own teammates and get away with it, but rarely works as an opposing player. I truly think Curry had no malice behind his initial actions, just in the heat of the moment, it came off as threatening.

As for Lee, I really do think he should've gotten the game he got. His initial shove started the whole thing and his shoulder-block upped it a level. If he didn't do either of those things, the worst of the "brawl" wouldn't have happened.

As for West, a couple of guys hit the floor while he was part of it, but with everybody heated and off-balance, it looked like they just fell instead of being pushed.

I do think Jack should've been fined too. He and Thompson helped push the fight towards the stands, yet Thompson got fined and Jack didn't.

Roy Hibbert can certainly afford 35k with his contract.

Curry should have been suspended too, but I was glad to see that Roy will be paying Lance's fine.

in addition to watching the video, the league talked to the players that were involved. what they said could have affected the result.

Well I'm sure the league would not want to suspend both of GSW's all stars for the game last night in New York on national TV. Suspending Lee isn't a problem because the casual fan does not know him and he's boring as hell to watch. If they suspended both that game would have been over in the first quarter.

I see no evidence that they are unwilling to suspend a star for a TV game although they sure came down on the Spurs for sitting stars for a TV game. they've been known to spread out suspensions and had they wanted to suspend Curry they could have done so for a different game than Lee. a suspension is a heavy penalty because it costs the player a "game check."

I was really cheering for the Warriors to beat the Knicks last night. Curry almost did it single handedly just as he almost beat us all by himself.

The league will definitely suspend a star for a TV game (Lee is an All-Star and they suspended him), but I think they would recognize that the Warriors without Lee AND Curry would be dreadful to watch. Imagine last night without Curry. There would have been no game to watch.

Return to Indiana Pacers
