And I think Beal can create his own shot. I think the running floater he showed last game is a shot he will be able to use effectively as time goes on. Guys have to play up tight on him because he can shoot which will make it easy to get a step on them.

I think there is a lot of value in having someone who can put up numbers without dominating the ball.

Agree 1000%. It's on of the things that so infuriates me when coaches go ISO at the end of quarters and games -- particularly the Wizards, because it usually means John dribbling into a set defense and taking a wild shot or trying a tough pass.

LBJ, CP3 and KD are the only guys who can really catapult their respective teams to contender status by being superior iso players (Although KD still has some ways to go in this I think)...I'm not so sure it is "necessary" component so long as you are dominant in another facet (potentially shooting for Beal).

I'd add Harden to that list. Nate talked about Harden earlier...and he's right that Harden has a unique and sneaky set of skills (head fakes, herky-jerky movements) along with a surprising strength that makes him almost impossible to stop when he wants to get to the rim.

I think the theory is good defense beats good offense, but an elite ISO player can't be shut down by good D.

MJ, Lebron, Kobe... some of the best ISO players of all time.

Oh yeah. He is a perfect fit. He will be on it.

So the road has been cleared for Beal. I expect him to step up even more now. Clearly he will end the year as the teams leading scorer.

28 pts is his season high.

I predict he breaks 30 in the next 5 games and I expect 35-38 before the season is over.

Shameless self promoting bump. 3 games after the prediction, he goes for 29 and only missed hitting 30 because he missed FTA late in the game.

Oh, and he tossed in 11 rebounds for good measure. :o

That my friends is one Real Deal Beal

Will anybody notice if I sneak back into this thread and delete any post where I made a negative prediction about Beal's ultimate upside?

This guy is really, really good. You gotta love how he plays the game. He just always makes good decisions. I loved that play near the end of the Knicks game when he missed a long 3, started to backpedal, but then recognized that the Knicks were slow in picking up the long rebound, he abruptly bolted for the ball, got it and drove the lane to draw the foul. Great recognition.

WaPo article

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/wi ... ory_1.html

Geez, I have a man crush on him! This kid wants to be great. I was really hard on him and I thought he looked lost in his first few games. Now he is just getting better.

His goal post
"LeBron and Kobe,” Beal said, declining to use the superstars’ surnames to emphasize his point. “When anybody talks about those guys, you know what they’re saying. You know the work they put in to get where they are. Those are two guys I admire. I’m trying to be where they are.”

Just saying, but what if...............???? He does a lot of things well and he is only 19.

Posted this on the General Board Rookie Impressions thread:

Here are the per-36 minute numbers for Lillard, Beal and Waiters since January 1st.

Code: Select all

MP    FGA   FTA   REB   AST   STL   BLK   TOV  PTS   eFG%   TS%
Lillard   36   14.7   3.1   2.9   6.0   0.8   0.3   2.9  17.0  .488  .529
Beal      36   14.1   3.3   4.2   2.6   1.1   0.6   1.5  17.6  .542  .566
Waiters   36   16.1   5.2   3.0   3.9   1.0   0.4   2.6  19.9  .496  .544

Lillard actually played 39.2 minutes to Beal's 33.8 and Waiters' 27.8 so you can weigh that however you deem fit. Also Lillard started every game, Beal started 21 of 24, and Waiters started 18 or 27, so you can get an idea of who played against starting-caliber defenses and who played against backups.

I hope these numbers show why Beal and Waiters supporters don't automatically cede anything to Lillard. Lillard started strong, but Beal and Lillard have played just as well ever since. Beal is by far the most efficient of the three, and Waiters is the most prolific.

When we're talking about Rookie of the Year, Lillard still has the clear edge because he has done it all season. But if we're talking about who is currently the better player, and who projects to be the better player in the future, Beal and Waiters have a strong case. Also, Lillard is 22, Waiters is 21, and Beal is 19.

And it's also worth mentioning this:

Both Beal and Wall, the only picks that weren't disastrously idiotic in the first four years of the shouldabeenarebuildsince'09, got their start with inept, pathetic, disastrously bad supporting casts.

Wall was surrounded by me first, no BBIQ morons with little talent.

Beal is surrounded by a bunch of backups, and d leaguers, and total hacks at PG.

Both scenario's are highly likely to impact your productivity and effectiveness.

I am not even slightly worried about the kid. If he stinks with a healthy wizards team 150 games into his career, then I'll worry.

A tip of the cap to this thread's originator too. Fish was the first one that I can remember that was touting Beal's virtues. I still have no idea what exactly it was that caught his eye, but it was way early. Like, 3 games into Beal's collegiate career early.

I came and posted here after watching Bradley live in preseason against Charlotte and it looked like the Allen comparison hype was legit. Followed him for a while and he wasn't doing much and wondered if the game I saw was a fluke

Glad to see its not. A guy that can get you 20ppg without dominating the ball is ridiculously valuable. I think you guys are a piece away from having a very nice core (assuming Wall gets his **** together). Wall/Beal/Shabazz reminds me of the 2001 Bucks Cassell/Allen/Big Dog team. Would be cool to see imo

good luck

It wasn't just you. there were a lot of "Jarvis Hayes 2.0" comments in late december. You have to be careful before you pass judgment on a 19 year old.

He even brought him up before he even played his first collegiate game.

I remember someone criticizing Beal's facial expressions. Weren't you the one arguing with them?

I am sure he was nervous and a little intimidated at first. You have to expect that though. There were times in December that he looked a bit frustrated that his shots weren't falling but he never had the type of body language that Wall has now.

He said Cassell is the one that told him to take it to the basket more. He said getting easy points helped his confidence and helped his shot come around. I thought his turnaround might have been some technical adjustment in his shot but it doesn't look like it based on his comments.

What surprised me from day 1 is that he was decisive with the ball. As soon as he caught it he would shoot/pass/drive quickly. He would never hold the ball looking lost.

Now that i know his mom played competitively and is constantly giving him advice i understand. Watching him play you would never know he was 19. Either he is a fast learner or he had a good teacher, or both.

Yeah, Hands was getting hung up over Beal's innocuous facial expressions.

Yup, Beal's mom played bball in college and his dad was a college football player. Nice combination of genes.
