Wake Forest to retire Paul's jersey Saturday 3/2/13

Chris Paul's No. 3 will be retired at halftime of Saturday's Wake Forest-Maryland game in Winston-Salem, N.C., as his alma mater celebrates "Chris Paul Day." He will be the 11th Wake player to have a jersey retired and the first since Josh Howard in 2004.

Paul led Wake Forest to its first No. 1 ranking in 2004 and a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. In his two seasons at the school, the Demon Deacons went 48-16 and made two NCAA tournament appearances. He ranks second among Wake Forest's all-time career leaders in 3-point shooting percentage (.469), and seventh in assists and steals.

"He was back in December for an afternoon and took two busloads (of children) to Toys 'R' Us and bought a bunch of Christmas presents for some kids," assistant athletic director Mike Odom told WFMY News' "Good Morning Show." "He's just been a great ambassador not only for the Triad community but for Wake Forest also and we're excited to have him back."

I don't follow college basketball, but can anyone explain to me why Wake Forest retired his jersey?

I can only see this from a statistical POV, but Paul only spend 2 years there averaging 15 points and 6 assists.

Hardly special.. Did the team get far? Win title or something?

I forgot all about it until like 2009, but I saw CP play at WF in 2004. They were 5th in the nation and beat down on Brown, 86-47.

CP had 6 points (2/5fg,2/2ft) 3 boards, 4 assists, 4 steals in 25 mins, so it wasn't a memorable performance.

Lead the team to their 1st ever National #1, ACC ROTY, ACC 3rd team as a freshman, Sweet 16. Sophomore: ACC 1st team, and named as an All American. Lost in 2nd round.

Nothing overly incredible, but he still a lot of work in the area, he was a local, and Wake have now retired 11 numbers.

Duncan, Muggsy and Josh Howard (lol) are the stand outs from the other retired players.

Paul loves Wake.

gives back and is apart of the community like he's a legacy that completed all 4 years there.
hell...he met his wife there and proposed to her in the gym.

plus while they aren't UNC or Duke...when he got there he helped them beat a good UNC team twice...not sure about Duke...a #2 seed and a sweet 16 run (they shouldn't have lost to WVA imo but he fouled out).

I'm sure if he treated Wake like these one and done players treat other universities, this wouldn't be happening.
