The 49ers got more than I thought they would get. I really did want #34 but wasn't sure it was possible, so I thought that the 49ers could settle for a 3rd rounder this year and next year. Not only do they get #34 but they also get a day 2 pick for next year that could turn into a 2nd rounder. Great job by Trent Baalke in getting the best possible value out of Alex Smith.

Especially since it was pretty obvious that the Niners didn't want to keep him because of the cap hit.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl---sour ... 30553.html

What will a San Francisco 49ers team already loaded with young talent do with more 2013 draft picks than can possibly make their roster?

Three words: Pursue Darrelle Revis.

The 49ers are among a handful of teams that have discussed making a run at Revis this offseason, according to two sources. In fact, the 49ers are poised to make a run at Revis even if it’s just for one season (although that could be problematic from Revis’ standpoint).

The bottom line is that if the New York Jets are serious about retooling their roster as quickly as possible, getting a fistful of picks from the 49ers could be a fine answer.

And if history is any indicator, the 49ers will be more than willing.

Isn't Revis' cap number around 15-16M? The 49ers, with the Alex Smith trade, are around 10M under. They'd need to cut Akers, Haralson, and probably one of Rogers or Whitner to get it done. Even with that, they'd still need to make some moves to make cap room for draft picks. It's possible and it is a fit, especially if they were to cut Rogers, but it seems unlikely.

I get that it makes sense for the Niners, but without salaries or anything else, isn't Alex Smith's value greater than what the Niners got for him.

They got a high 2nd and a future 3rd (or 2nd if KC wins a certain amount of games next year) for someone who wasn't going to start another game in SF barring injury to Kaep. Before Harbough came, he was close to not playing in the league again, or at least just being a 2nd or 3rd stringer for the rest of his career.

It is interesting now with darelle revis possibly in the mix. Or, keep drafting and drafting and drafting and building a solid core of young talent base. Either way its a win win for the 9ers with all of the picks they have.

Like I said before, I know that it works for the Niners because he was never going to start another game, but if he was on any other team as the starter, wouldn't the team have gotten more in return?

It works for the Niners, I know, but could they have gotten more...?

Highly doubt it.

The 49ers got the 2nd pick of the 2nd round and most of the playoff teams at the end of round 1 already have an established QB. The only team you could point to is Minnesota at 23 but its not like they are truly desperate for a QB. It really was the best offer possible for the 49ers. 34 by itself would've been ok with me but to throw in an additional day 2 pick for next year sweetened the deal.

The Vikings would have been really good with Alex Smith there, too bad they are committed to Ponder long term, for the time being at least.

2nd this year + 2nd/3rd in 2014 is a great deal for the Niners.

With 5 picks in the first three rounds, we have a ton of ammo to either stock up on quality young guys or move up for a gamechanger.

I think Smith has more composure and maturity as a quarterback at this point than the younger Ponder does.

They would have beat the Packers in the playoffs with Alex Smith at QB, imo.

I think Smith will compliment the running game well in KC and be a very solid game manager. He's not going to be a turnover machine like Cassel was last year and he should be able to complete passes at a much better percentage.

This is Ponder's make or break year, and they are already looking for a better #2 that could push him. If Kevin Kolb gets released they will definitely give him a look. Drew Stanton makes sense too, similar style to Ponder...and better than Ponder IMO.

+1

I think KC fans are going to be pleasantly surprised with what they get out of Alex this year. He's not going to put up 500 yard/5 TD games or throw 80 yard bombs but in a WCO system that relies on short passing, timing and accuracy he should be money. Given solid protection and a good running game (which KC should have) he'll be solidly above average.
