OFF TOPIC: Dennis Rodman Visits North Korea

On Dennis Rodman's visit to North Korea.

Let me just say first of all I am a fan of basketball and its greats for better or worse each gave to the game. For better or worse some still give to the game and to the community. Mr. Rodman is one of these greats we speak of today. He has been plastered all over main stream media for his review of his North Korean trip. I just cant understand why people cant take the visit for what it was. It was nothing more. Apparently Kim Jung Un is a basketball fan and big one at that. Lets just accept that Dennis Rodman has done something Clinton, Bush nor Obama has managed to do for numerous amount of years.

Lets review some interesting facts. Jesse Jackson in 1983, Jackson traveled to Syria to secure the release of a captured American pilot, Navy Lt. Robert Goodman who was being held by the Syrian government. In June 1984, Jackson negotiated the release of twenty-two Americans being held in Cuba after an invitation by Cuban president Fidel Castro. On the eve of the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Jackson made a trip to Iraq, to plead to Saddam Hussein for the release of foreign nationals held there as the "human shield", securing the release of several British and twenty American individuals. I could go on as Jackson has been very active in communicating with many of our enemy's.
This wasn't the only time that something like this has happened. Where trivial people have visited unfriendly foreign shores and lead the way for civil communication. Many actors and artist traveled to Soviet Russia to visit and socialize. Recently, FBI/CIA files reveal that these trivial visits lead to warming of US and Russian relations in the 80's and 90's.

Lets remember that Jackson, on his first attempt to free the hostages like Rodman was intially jeered for establishing communication with the enemy. Some might say its racist, or elitist. I don't know. But if it was Sean Penn or Katy Perry I don't think they would be getting slammed the way Rodman is. People say dont take his visit seriously. Are you kidding me this guy along with the Vice Magazine crew (props!) is the only American asset that has credible relevant intel on this Kim Jung Un. Not one! Not one Seal Team Op guy or CIA operator has any better intel on Jung Un than Mr Rodman right now. Just makes me mad. Just because Mr. Rodman basketball player whom is black tatted up, pierced, and world class rebel we are to ignore his invaluable contribution.

Sure the guy may not be the best spoken person. Which sisters Laura & Lisa Ling both pointed out in a recent interview. But the sisters say that they see Rodman's visit as positive but understand that Rodman may not have been aware of the gravity of the Kim Jung Un's crimes. He may have been wowed during his visit. NBC Journalist Lisa Ling went to free her sister Luna from North Korean captivity a few years back. I think they know what they are talking about. So I just wanted to praise Rodman. Props to Vice Magazine for whom I have been reading since the late 90's for laughs (They started the "People of WallMart" craze) has now crossed into the realm of main stream journalism congrats.

"Obama call him..."

This is probably better for the current affairs board, but after reading your post it seems like you're mad at no one for no reason. I don't quite get the purpose of your post. Are you really surprised that he got mixed reviews for visiting North Korea?

Upset with the media. Only a very few amount of reporters seem to get it. I hate that just because Rodman is a basketball player and some what odd looking. Makes him a idiot to be ashamed of.

I have heard the same about Magic right after his retirement. People ripped him for years. Well that is until he rejuvenated parts of South Central and made money doing it.

Upset with other NBA personalities who have yet to come out to defend Rodman's visit. I dont expect Jordan but how about Barkley, Pippen, or Bird.

Yes very upset about this. Maybe if he played golf or chess they would take the visit a bit more serious.

I missed the part where Rodman has freed any of the people from concentration camps or atleast donated some food to the economically depressed in North Korea. He sat next to a dictator and suddenly comes out saying that Obama should call him?

Um.. did he miss the part that 70% of the country doesn't get adequate food while the entire GDP is being transferred to fund the military and a semi-retarded nuclear program?

Or the fact that access to foreign media and open education is restricted throughout the country and the nation is brainwashed to believe that Kim Jong Il has spawned all of them with his left testicle?

He got what he needed, some attention during his period of irrelevance. He doesn't need any respect for this.

McGrady went to some of the most depressed parts of Somalia and donated money to build educational and athletic facilities there. That did not get any national media attention either and that's a far more wonderful and benevolent thing than Rodman has ever done in his life.

 First off, it's mostly because it's North Korea. Second off, it's not like Rodman has done himself any favors in his past to get himself taken more seriously. Foreign relations are more complicated than a front put on during a high profile visit to the country. There is a reason I'm not Secretary of State besides that fact Obama and I aren't as tight as he and hil-dawg or kerry. Thirdly, it's a visit to **** North Korea. You know, that country with a dictator that leaves his people starving and is conducting nuclear tests in addition to having a stockpile of chemical weapons.

Did you miss the part that NO ONE just visits north Korea? Did you miss the part that NO ONE meets with Kim Jung Un? NO ONE has ANY, NOT ANY creditable intel on the guy? Everything they know is hear say or old news.

Honestly I do think at some point Rodman will get debriefed by someone with US government. Rodman says he will return soon. Oddly enough the US Dept has not spoken against a return visit for Rodman.

Democratic and civilized countries don't go there because its a depressing **** hole ruled by a narcissistic prick of a dictator.

Lets not act like Rodman was wearing a wire for the CIA the whole time.

Why would the state department speak out against a return visit? Rodman "breaking the ice" is a dictator wanting to meet an athlete he grew up watching because his house actually had cable while everyone else had to watch what his dad said they had to watch.

As much as you say other people are downplaying this, you seem to be blowing it equally out of proportion. Pretty sure Ty's post had a hint of sarcasm as well.

Well Ty. Sarcasm?

I think it was a reach by a dictator. Its bigger than what you make it seem to be. Not as laughable I think. But my point is that if the guy had been lets say a painter or actor or White or Asian I don't think it would be as laughable. If it was someone else. Someone without piercing etc. A Duke graduate instead of a Southeastern Oklahoma State alumn here would be a lot less snickering going on.

The media puts him on a some dumb basketball jock that been paraded around like a carnival animal. I bet he thought he was giving something to the community. I bet in Mr Rodman mind he thought he was helping the Pres. Obama somehow. In the name of peace. With the tool of basketball.

I will wait for the coming days to further establish an opinion on this visit, but at the current time I think this is Us getting a foot in the door for future relations with the country. Trying to find some common ground between the two before we throw in our 2 cents on how we think they should run their land.

So when you say its irrelevant it makes me question what aren't you comprehending. Where are you getting lost. I just put down what I did and didn't understand.

I am saying the visit should be as serious as if Biil Gates or Tiger Woods making the trip over.
The visit IS significant.
Instead of being laughed at he should be seriously recognized. Instead he is being considered as a dumb weirdo black jock who think he's some diplomat.

Like I said props to Vice Magazine. I mean these guys have been on point for years. The publication is a good read. No nonsense reporting from covering human trafficking before it was trendy to speak out against it.They regularly covered Al Queda and the inevitability of terrorist attacks within US years before 9/11. They also featured LeBron before he broke to NBA. The Vice Mag guys realized the humor and irony of the visit im sure but they also realized that this visit could become an important historical artifact.

Rodman is either a crackhead that know nothing or he is a secret government agent working for Obama.

Also to compare Bill Gates to Tiger visiting is a slight at Bill Gates philanthropy and good will, especially when it's pretty commonly known that Tiger's kind of an ass hole athlete that just got caught and ridiculed in the media because he's yet another rich man that can't keep it in his pants.

You've given me no reason to change my mind. You cited ground breaking people and events (pretty randomly at that), then just lumped in Rodman because he's an NBA player who visited North Korea - likely for the sole purpose of propaganda production by Kim.

It really looks like his visit was groundbreaking:
http://news.yahoo.com/nkorea-vows-cance ... 20108.html

North Korea's military is vowing to cancel the 1953 cease-fire that ended the Korean War, straining already frayed ties between Washington and Pyongyang as the United Nations moves to impose punishing sanctions over the North's recent nuclear test.

Without elaborating, the Korean People's Army Supreme Command boasted of having "lighter and smaller nukes" and warned late Tuesday of "surgical strikes" meant to unify the divided Korean Peninsula.

They even mentioned your boy and the true reason for Kim letting him visit. Where's the support or Eric Schmidt, by the way?

Rodman met the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, called him an "awesome guy" and said Kim wanted President Barack Obama to call him. The trip was criticized for giving the authoritarian leader a propaganda boost, but Rodman suggested "basketball diplomacy" could warm relations. Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made a four-day trip in January, but did not meet Kim.
