Bautista outplays his contract by more than $70 million over the next four seasons (2013-2016).

That's awesome. Now I can legitimately say I have a body like Derek Jeter's. Sweet.

And more hair. Even if you're rocking the Patrick Stewart, you're still a follicular giant compared to Jeter.

I'm like one clipper setting away from the full-on Stewart, but yeah, I'm a follicle super-hero by comparison.

Nice to have an AL East thread.

The Yankees have "made a significant offer" to Robinson Cano in order to keep him from hitting the free agent market after the 2013 season.
While it was clear the offer had not been accepted, Brian Cashman would not say whether it had been rejected or was still being considered.
"We've made a significant offer. That's what I thought Hal [Steinbrenner] said to everybody," Cashman said. "I'm not going to comment anymore.

Based on his production and position and factoring in that the Yanks have set a precedent of paying a premium for the best option available (see CC, Tex, ARod, etc...) isn't Cano going to be expecting an absolutely outrageous sum? I mean he's the same age as Pujols was for his FAdom and he's a second baseman. I don't think 8/200 is out of his wheelhouse and if he hit the FA market I wouldn't want to speculate on how ridonk a team like the Dodgers could get if they are still in free-spending mode.

Re: AL East Discussion Thead
I love that he calls Boston the epicenter of Baseball; that's hilarious. To be clear, an epicenter is the location above the center of an earthquake. I know we think of it as the center, 'cause it's on the surface, but the word means something else. (okay if it needs that much explaining, it's not hilarious, but I still chuckled).
So, as a quake is caused at the focus below the epicenter and Baseball begins its big first explosion in NYC, it's actually a quite accurate description of Boston as, just by happenstance, above an important place. Although I doubt that's quite what Farrell or his fans thought it meant (I'm really hoping he meant that Baseball was started by the mole people).

Teix is now out 8-10 weeks with a strained wrist.
ARod, Granderson, Rivera, Teix, Jeter maybe. How much does that work out to in annual salary?

2 series against the Yankees in mid-late April, wonder if they'll push their returns earlier.
Btw, what's the status of Pineda for this year?

Forgot about him, I think they're hoping for a mid-season return.

63.5m for the trio that will be out to start the year. Bump it to 90.5 if Jeter and Rivera don't make it.

Re: AL East Discussion Thead
Lotta pressure on their pitching staff...they'll hang around even with the injuries if they get top-shelf stuff from what should be a very good rotation, but an injury or Hughesian collapse and they could find themselves below .500 at the start of June. Not irrecoverable if that's the case, but it could be enough to give us an opening.

They've been talking the All-Star break or later. Labrum surgery be nasty, and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't return to usefulness until next season.
