Alvin Gentry vs Mike Brown.
Poll is one vote only, the vote cannot be changed, if you vote other then please name and explain.
Lord have mercy and please make this stop, Dunlap is either tanking when we don't need to or he hasn't got a clue.
Both of these guys have had long winding roads on the NBA merry go round and lo and behold they may actually be looking for another opportunity enough to the point they would accept a gig with us.
A core of Kemba,Sessions,MKG and Biz locked in plus a top four pick guaranteed is definite incentive for next season..
So the only question is who have you got? Gentry or Brown?
I voted Brown, I think he is an excellent defensive coach who excels at getting the most out of role players, his work in Detroit's 2004 title run is often overlooked.
I think the LA experiment will allow his market to be low enough for us to appproach.
I really like Gentry but I believe we need a defensive coach to suit our personnel.

I voted Mike Brown because I think he's a better coach than given credit for due the shortcomings of superstars a la LeBron James and Kobe Bryant needing a scapegoat to keep their ego in tact. Not to mention he a was a lead assistant to Popovich during a Spurs championship run.

Funnily enough I think Mike Brown falls short when the balance of his team is out of whack by the presence of a superstar, obviously it worked well with Lebron who is so unselfish compared to a Kobe who is not.
Point being constantly isoing Lebron doesn't kill your team chemistry, as compared to Kobe.
I think Mike Brown would run a balanced offense here lacking a true "star"

Any coach that can make us at least a average defensive team I'm all for it and I believe Mike Brown can do that.

Not deliberately a pun but it really is a catch 22 in regards to our next coach, personnel wise we're building a defensive Charlotte basketball identity.
I'd love Gentry over Dunlap but not over Brown, our next coaching change needs to play to our strengths.

I have neither. Brown couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. He's like D'Antoni. He can't coach a lick but if you give him an amazing team they will win games and some people will be fooled into thinking they can actually coach.

Its overlooked because he wasn't the coach of the Pistons in 2004.
I think the LA experiment will allow his market to be low enough for us to appproach.
His market value is low because he can't coach.

nobody good is gonna come to team that gives them garbage to work with then fires them for losing
if our biggest problem with Dunlap is that our kids are playing too well to be on the bench thats a problem I can live with.
Dunlap was brought in because he is willing to go along with Cho's plan. If you disagree with what Dunlap is doing (minutes-wise at least, not defensive strategy) you're most likely disagreeing with what Cho is wanting to do as well

I voted other because all these options suck....but of these 3 for this particular team right now with no talent I'd rather stick with Dunlap.....he's kinda like our team, I dont expect much from him but I guess he has potential while I already know the other 2 are glorified assistants that suck as head coaches. My choice is still other though

Alvin Gentry doesn't suck lol he would be a monster grab for this franchise but its far too unrealistic to get him

So are you saying he helped Detroit when he was an assistant with the Pacers in 04?

Re: Alvin Gentry vs Mike Brown.
i've never been impressed with gentry. the only good thing about gentry is the neato factor of having a coach from my alma mater.
gentry was smart enough to let nash run the offense for the suns the last few years, so he gets credit for that, but what has he done exactly to make anyone think he is a great coach?
i remember when he was coaching the clippers many years ago and NBATV had a show about that team. there were lots of clips featuring gentry coaching. i remember being amazed at how little coaching he did. he would just repeat phrases like "lets go team", "lets get that rebound", "we need to score on this next play". now maybe they were editing out the parts where he said something insightful, but he just didnt seem to have a clue.
the guy has had exactly one good full season out of 12, over 4 different teams.
of course dunlap sounds like the smartest coach in the world and look what that got us.

i wish Gentry would go coach App our program is so embarassingly pathetic. youd think he could at least get us a decent recruit or two
i dont think he's very attached to the school never heard of him being up there or anything while I was there

Re: Alvin Gentry vs Mike Brown.
to add to gentry - i think he is more of a paul silas type coach than a dunlap type coach. meaning, he doesnt appear to be some great teacher of the game, but more a manager of egos, personalities etc.... gentry is a guy you stick on a veteran team like the suns from 4 years ago. he will make everyone happy and feel good and keep the team motivated. he is not the guy you want teaching a bunch of rookies and young players.
now dunlap may not have been the best guy for the job, but the idea hiring a teacher who was OK with working with young players was a good idea. we are not ready for a gentry coach. we saw how that worked with silas when he was presented with a team of youth. we need a teacher, whether that is dunlap or someone else, i dont know.
thats just my impression from what i know about gentry. if i remember, the book 7 seconds or less, talks a lot about gentry's role on that suns team prior to him being head coach. its been a while since i read that book though. but from what i remember, gentry was the peacemaker. he was the guy who had great relationships with the players, the guy the players confided in.

back in the 90s - the 5 years i was at app, i never heard one mention of the guy. i didnt know he was app grad until he got the gig with the clippers a few years later. but i heard plenty about press maravich and bobby cremins.

At this point I'd take just about anybody over Mike Dunlap. Voted Gentry because he's quite a solid coach, who was just used as a scapegoat in Phoenix.

Mike Dunlap for Coach of the Year. He lead this hell-ridden miserable team to more wins than last season.

Re: Alvin Gentry vs Mike Brown.
Meh, just keep Dunlap and fire him after next year if he doesn't pan out. No coach worth their chops are going to coach this team right now anyway.
Mike Brown is awful, just a terrible coach. Ambivalent on Gentry.
