If you guys are thinking that a championship is possible to win with Dwight as #1 option on a team with teams like OKC and Miami being around, you are in a for a rude awakening. Dwight, if he does get healthy and back to his old days, is best suited being a 2nd option. Why? The dudes offensive game sucks and is basically a non factor on that end of the court when the game gets close. Tell me what ever you want but he has had and will always have an awkward offensive game.

Edit: This does not mean that I think he will not get the max but a response to people that think he can lead a team to a championship

If I can give Pau Gasol to return to 2010 Pau Gasol on that massive contract I can live with Dwight Howard getting the max contract knowing he'll be back to normal by next year.

When healthy Dwight could very easily be our best player without being our teams's number one offensive option.

If Javale McGee ever starts for the Lakers I'll probably take some time away from the NBA. At least until management has had a complete and thorough psychiatric exam.

Right now, I've seen that the team has improved, Kobe has been a monster, Jamison hitting 3s, Earl Clark been working hard, Nash @ 39 still playing better than other young PG's and although dwight has been getting rebounds (#1 rebounder in the nba) we can get 2 or 3 C's that will equal to that!

I've read here in realm b4 that Dwight has been playing like Kosta Koufus of the nuggets, and Koufus aint a garbage C, not certainly good or great but he can contribute but at that level of play is not equal to a max contract.

I don't know w/ u guys but I've seen great passes that Nash threw to Dwight during P&R and not all the time diwght finishes is because first he gets fouled and you know what happens if he is in the charity line, second the ball get taps and stolen coz unlike P&R of nash and amare in phoenix before, amare can roll and just drive and dunk the ball to the basket with finesse and can really create from the momentum he gathered during the roll or from running, Dwight was good at that before but now, I've seen him when he roll is that he does not explode right away rather he gathers strength and put the ball down or stop to gather momentum and just use his strength going up instead of 1 sequence roll and drive and because of that other players can catch up and just foul him, dwight now offer strength and no more or few finesse, and with no back to the basket and low post game then that ain't good. Don't misconstrue me, Dwight is strong and a C or a PF needs to be strong but they need a back to the basket game or a li'l range and dwight does not have it, I use Paul millsap, he is a strong forward, undersize but he makes up with low post game, strong moves and now a lil J. Bynum is a great low post scorer but he is frequently injured and I still say lakers did a great switch from bynum to dwight coz bynum is not playing .

I thought this thread was a joke. Then I read it.

No brainer. Keeping Dwight is the #1 priority at this point. Dwight and Kobe will keep the Lakers competitive for the next 2 seasons. But pr3tty soon the Lakers are going to have to start thinking about getting another young star to play with dwight...to replace kobe. Scary stuff around the corner so just enjoy bryant's last years.

Keep him please, dunno about the right pricetag, despite his offense not brilliant this year but he draws a lot attention, thus make it easier for our perimeter players to attack the rim or shooting 3pt.

KOBE is done sooner rather than later. He is doing great right now, but clearly, HE IS IN HIS FINAL YEARS. Nash, looks nice, but he is also up there in years. Same with Pau. Same with Metta.

So who are we going to build around in the future? meeks?

Sign him immediately as the building block, MAX MONEY, then surround him with the guns to make it happen and win our 17th.

Sometimes the easiest choice isn't the right choice... Sometimes you have to be patient for the ideal situation to come available...
I have serious doubts Dwight will ever be a franchise player in the way Lakers fans are used to... I think he's a second fiddle at best...

So the fact that he's on the team, and that the rest of the guys only have a few years left is irrelevant to me. I'm willing to suck up a couple bad seasons to find the next Kobe, or Magic, or Shaq, or Kareem...

To me, our most important asset right now isn't Dwight, it's our impending cap room in 2014... With the new CBA, every team is going to have to retool and get leaner and meaner... It's already happening. LAC, Miami, OKC, Brooklyn, NYC... Book it, in the next few years all the powerhouse teams are going to shed salary any way they can. The Harden trade is a window into the future.

Our 2014 money allows us to take a big step forward into this new era. The only way I temper that by signing Dwight to the Max is if he is 100% committed to LA and if I have several Drs opinions that he's going to get his physicality back... Otherwise the stakes are too high.

So I get everything everyone is saying, but I think the idea that the Lakers NEED to sign Dwight is an exaggeration of the situation.

I expect that all the things I mentioned are going to fall into place, and Dwight will be signed to the max in LA... But not for the reasons I see a lot of frightened LA fans mentioning.
