Head Coach Candidates

Post#1 » by KDBG » Thu Mar 7, 2013 11:21 pm

Like I've always stated, I'm not anti-Corbin, or pro-Corbin. Most of my frustration is with the FO. But saying that, I can see why most Jazz fans have had it with Corbin, especially after the Cavs game debacle.

Who would your choices be? In my opinion, in any type of organization, although you want to stick to your core values and principles that made you successful before, you want to reach for a newish, younger, ambitious mind that can bring something new to the table, and build something from scratch. This is why I think a company like Apple has been way less innovative after Steve Jobs died. All they did was get the next person in line, Tim Cooke. I don't like that idea at all. Because that's not what that person's role is. Tim Cooke probably excelled at being in his old role. He doesn't fit in his new role at all. That's why I fear for the future of the NBA with Adam Silver taking over. It's like Smithers taking over for Mr. Burns. That just wouldn't work.

So with the Jazz, if they were to make a change, I would reach for someone really talented from outside of the organization, but also possess the core values and principles that fit seamlessly into the Jazz culture. That's why, so far, I'm at least somewhat optimistic about the hire of Lindsay. I hope he's a little more aggressive and does things his own way, while still being a "Jazz" type of guy.

So for me, that eliminates anyone from our organization, (except maybe Horny). But it also eliminates anyone like the Van Gundys. I'd like someone fresh. Someone like a Thibbs when he was an assistant in Boston, that everyone knew had the natural skills and leadership to be a great coach one day.

What do you guys think?

nate mcmillan? brian shaw? i guess adelman is a pipe dream.

i think brian shaw is worth a shot. he already got the shaft with the lakers and is considered to be head coach material who already paid his dues as an assistant. he also was a protege of one of the greatest coaches in history, and coaching (and playing with) few of the best players ever.

Why exactly are either of the Van Gundys out?

I nominate myself as the new head coach. With this forum as my assistant coaches, and non of us are responsible for any GM decisions. :)

For Real Though:
I thought Hornacek would be the likely canidatate if Phil Johnson still refuses to take headcoach out of respect for Sloan. I think he is a little too old to do 42 road games a year. Jeff is about right. He has known this Jazz system longer than anyone I know that isn't Sloan or Johnson.

if we operate under these criteria, i guess some will leave them out. i'd love to get SVG though. he'd be my first choice from all available coached out there.

you know what? screw it - the Van Gundys are in.

Larry Brown sent Pistons to a championship win, and a repeat to the championships the following year but lost to Spurs in game 7...

Where is he? Wasn't he the Charlotte Coach..

What core Utah Jazz value does JVG lack? He doesn't like flopping? He thinks fouling too much is a bad thing?

probably big mouth when it comes to the media. he's not the conservative type in that regard. i guess that's what KDBG meant. i'm just going along with his criteria. i mean, lindsey seems like a jazz guy, after (or along) KOC. when we think of the jazz from a coaching perspective, sloan comes to mind and not corbin. so with the image of sloan in mind, could you imagine JVG as his successor?

i love his personality though, but as a coach i'm lukewarm about him. i would rather have his brother SVG - i would LOVE to have him coach the jazz.

Maybe I didn't make it clear enough, but I would want someone young, and outside of the organization. Not that veteran coaches with experience are bad, cause they are not obviously. I'd just want someone who had a fresh, new approach to today's game. Sometimes older coachee tend to be stubborn, and don't want to evolve with game, ala Jerry Sloan. But that's just my opinion. I like the Van Gundys, but not for our situation. Again, just my opinion.

I would love Jeff Van Gundy, but he's never leaving his announcing gig.

Stan Van Gundy might work. But his media flaming wasn't good. Utah likes a coach who doesn't participate in that stuff. But I'd look past it if he'd stick around for more than 4 years.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

Not taking a stand on this issue, but this EXACT quote could have been made accurately about Ty two and a half years ago....

I would be intrigued in either van gundy, but other than that, this thread is kind of moot.

Corbin was extended already, he is not going anywhere.

I have a feeling Horny would run a really uptempo, innovative system. Just a gut feeling. I would find that really intriguing with our young, athletic players.

I don't know about his coaching demeanor though. Would he be fiery, and passionate? Or too laid back like Corbin? I have no clue.

I would have really loved Jacque Vaughn here. Natural leader. Also, I wonder if there would be anyone from the college ranks. I wonder if there is anyone that could translate well to the pro game.

I really like the VCU coach. I also like Brad Stevens from Butler. Although I wonder if Stevens could even demand the respect from grown men when he looks like he's 20. Great, great coach though.

Coaches get respect from their players by how they act and what they say, not by what they look like.
