New to the NFL

Post#1 » by MellowRose » Thu Mar 14, 2013 2:18 am

Hey guys, I've never really payed attention to football before, but I've suddenly just gone crazy over it, and was wondering if you guys could help me out. How would you compare the NBA player's to the NFL? I know that this is probably a pretty hard question to answer accurately, and there will be many various opinions, but I'm fine with that. Who's the LeBron of the NFL, and who's the Kobe, KD, etc...?

Who is your favorite player at every major position?

I think the NFL is much more about rooting for your favorite team, than rooting for individual players since it's a much more team-focused sport.

There are some guys I enjoy watching just because they're absolute masters of their craft (Peyton Manning) or unbelievable athletes (AD, Calvin Johnson) but otherwise my favorite player at a position is usually whoever's starting for the Niners or Redskins

This pretty much nails it on the head.

I guess if you absolutely had to pick a "Lebron" of the NFL it would come down to two guys: Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, and that's for a few reasons. Peyton, because he left his team and performed well with his new squad (with a much less bitter divorce). Tom, because he's arguably the best that ever has been and quite few people despise him.

There are so many players to just be in awe of, either in terms of freakish athletic ability, or overall skill that it's really hard to make a stone cold comparison to anyone in the NBA.

Like the posters above said, the NFL is more of a team-oriented sport unlike the NBA which is more about superstars. The best player in the NFL is Adrian Peterson, so I guess you can say he's the LeBron. Calvin Johnson could be the KD, I guess. Tom Brady or Peyton Manning could be Kobe. It's hard to make an NBA comparison, much like the posters above said.

As far as my favorite player at each position goes, most of them are Patriots since they're my favorite team
QB - Tom Brady
RB - Stevan Ridley
FB - Vonta Leach
WR - A.J. Green/Julio Jones
TE - Rob Gronkowski/Aaron Herandez
OL - Logan Mankins
DE - J.J. Watt
DT - Vince Wilfork
LB - Patrick Willis, Jerod Mayo
CB - Darrelle Revis
S - Ed Reed

RG3 will end up being the "Lebron" of the NFL in a few years time. He's already incredibly popular and it's only going to go up.

I really don't see this happening unless he leaves Washington to pursue a better situation.

RG3 is more like the Kyrie Irving of the NFL rather than LeBron.

To answer your question, it doesn't make sense to compare NBA players to NFL players. There is a much greater differentiation between positions in the NFL than there is in the NBA. Especially considering there are no 2-way players in the NFL, where as in the NBA every player plays both offense and defense..even ones that are horrible at one of them.

The NFL is much more of a team oriented league. The NBA is all about individual super stars. I grew up playing basketball, and understand the game of basketball MUCH more than football..but there is no doubt that football and the NFL is a better product and league than the NBA. Over the last few years the NBA has really disappointed me and has really lost my interest while my interest in the NFL has grown each year. I've just about all but given up on the NBA.

Washington is a big market, and the Redskins are one of the traditional franchises with tons of history and a rabid fan base. And he won a division title his first year despite an injury riddled team. Compare that to Peyton Manning who went 3-13 as a rookie playing for small market Indianapolis and still blew up to become the most popular/marketable player in the NFL.

Based on what? Irving puts up big #s, but his team is still awful. RG3 put up big #s, but won a division his first year. Not comparable to Irving.

It's just premature to compare Griffin to Lebron. Griffin isn't the best or most valuable player in the league yet. Maybe in a couple seasons.

RG3 = Rose?

Both put up big numbers and lead their team to the playoffs in their rookie years, both won ROY and both are coming off knee injuries.

I don't think that I can say it any better than this. If pressed to name my favorite players by position then I'm sure that most would be Texans.

But if you are going to follow certain players, make sure that you check out the defensive awesomeness that is J.J. Watt! ;)
