It might be conflict of interest if the Lakers buy the Staples center. That would be like a student buying his own school.

AEG is for sale because the Kings won and their value os at an all-time high, because of the crazy Dodgers sale price and to raise the rate on Staples. It is actually bad for our Lakers.
Not even close, last year the Lakers were the highest valued team in the NBA.....$900 mil or so ( not exact figure ), and they actually pay NOTHING to play in Staples.

i'm not sure about the concept of rent, but i think it involves an exchange of money for use of facilities such as an arena and practice venues

here's the more specific agreement of what the lakers pay on their 25 yr lease with staples:

In 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported that Anschutz owns 30 percent of the Lakers and the team doesn’t pay rent to use the arena, but instead gives “an undisclosed percentage of their games’ ticket sales to the Staples Center.”

so while the lakers don't pay a fixed "rent", they most definitely aren't playing at staples for free.

AEG owns staples and the kings, so you'd be raising the rent on yourself there me thinks.

AEG insiders have told me that the company has turned down offers of more than $1 billion for Staples Center alone.

Leiweke has played a crucial role at AEG for years and has been the company’s point person in negotiations with Los Angeles city leaders over luring a professional football team to the city and building a downtown stadium. Anschutz said Dan Beckerman, AEG’s chief financial officer, will take over Leiweke’s role as president and CEO.

In a statement, Beckerman said the pursuit of a downtown football stadium adjacent to L.A. Live remains a top priority. “Priority projects going forward include the development of Farmers Field adjacent to our L.A. Live campus and the pursuit of our plan to bring the NFL back to Los Angeles,” Beckerman said.

So will this help or hurt LA's football effort?
