2013 Free Agent targets
The Nets are going to be hard pressed to improve the team this offseason. They will have the Mini-Mid Level exception and will be able to sign players to veteran minimums.
Someone who I would like to see the Nets target with the MLE is Tony Allen. It seems Memphis is going to blow it up and go young after this season in order to avoid paying the luxury tax. A vet like Allen is likely to look for a team that has a legit chance of going on a deep playoff run like the Nets. His price tag shouldnt be too high either because he is not a scorer or a big and is already 31.
It's only a matter of time before Johnson becomes to slow to play the 2 and slides up to SF. Allen would be that ideal SG because he can guard 3 positions. When DWill has a tough assignment at PG he can be an onball defender which would help preserve DWill.
As far as some veteran minimum guys Zaza, Brand and Odom come to mind. Zaza is very close with Toko and could come in to man the backup C with Blatche sliding down to start at PF. I prefer Brand to Odom because he brings good leadership.
Lopez - (Zaza)
Blatche(PF/C) - (Brand, Hump, Tele)
Johnson(SF/SG) - (Wallace, Toko)
T Allen - (Bogans, Brooks)
D Will - (Watson, Taylor)

Tony Allen is going to get substantially more than a 3.1 million per year deal. He'll probably be looking at a 5-7 million per for three year deal if history serves.

That's what he got last contract when he was a couple of years younger.
Players like Allen dont get 5-7 mil. Offensive players get paid. He is more of a specialist

Also I like Allen, but how can this team spend it's only available substantial exception to bring in another wing who pretty much directly mirrors Gerald Wallace on offense with even worse actual outside shooting?
Would seem the Taxpayer's MLE would be better served bringing in a swingman who can shoot as well as defend, or even a combo guard who can run the offense when Deron is on the bench and can fill it up when they're out there together like Devin Harris, although I'd imagine he will get more as well.
I guess it really depends on the draft and trades though.
Might even be better to go after a big man like Brand or Dally.

Re: 2013 Free Agent targets
The obvious first choice target with the taxpayer's MLE is AK 47, assuming he opts out. Let's hope that Blatche doesn't get greedy and demands that MLE. I would like him to stay but if he wants our MLE, he can gtfo. Tony Allen is not what I would want to use that on, he is a terrible offensive player. We were already supposed to have that kind of a player with Gerald Wallace.
Kyle Korver might be an option, he is an elite 3 pt shooter which is something we desperately need. Deron is great friends with him and Billy King drafted him. He is 30+ so just maybe he might consider the vet. min in a winning situation, although he is more likely to settle for 3-4 mill. Obviously, there is Bojan Bogdanovic who can be bought out this summer, but that will take up our MLE too because he is not coming here for much less than what he is making in Europe. I'm pretty sure Anthony Morrow could be had for the vet min. because he has regressed and can't get much playing time anywhere. So he's another option as a 3 pt specialist.
We need a backup SF, so Matt Barnes could be a cheap option although it's likely that he'll want to stay with Clippers and that Clippers will want to retain him. Aside from this, I don't think there's many interesting free agents who could be had with what we can pay.

Re: 2013 Free Agent targets
Andrei Kirilenko
Devin Harris
Elton Brand
Kyle Korver
Chauncey Billups
Anthony Morrow
Those are my top choices.
Of those, AK and Billups would be at the top of my list without a doubt, they are by far the best players up there. However, they're also the most unrealistic by far. AK is due to make 10 million next year if he opts in...I don't see him taking a paycut like that unless he goes to an actual, clear cut contender, like the Heat (that would be so unfair, with AK at the 4 and Bosh at the 5).
Billups seems to really like the Clippers, and they seem to really like him. I see him staying there in all likelihood.
After those 2, I'd probably want Devin Harris or Kyle Korver, it's kind of a toss-up. If CJ Watson somehow stays, I'd go for Korver. If not, I still might lean Korver, but Harris would obviously be welcome. Only reason I'd really like Korver is because he's such an elite shooter and off-ball player, and we desperately need someone like that. Outside of Joe Johnson and Deron Williams, we don't have any elite shooters, and both of them are going to be sharing the ball handling duties mainly.
I'd see if Morrow would settle for the vet min., because I'd love for him to come back and be the backup SG. He's an elite spot up shooter, and again, we need a floor spacer like that, especially if Gerald Wallace is our SF for the next 3.5 years.

"I’m very aware (of my unique situation)," Blatche told the Daily News. "That’s what I’m saying. Everybody is probably thinking I’m looking to get that big check. I’m not. Not at all. I’m looking at what’s best for me."
"If I get a lot (in my next contract), yeah, it’s going to take pressure off the Wizards," he said. "But that’s why I’m not going to do that."

Re: 2013 Free Agent targets
Quite honestly, if we got Blatche/Watson for the vet minimum before we were a winning team, I don't see any scenario where we can't improve the team with the free agents that will command the vet minimum or MLE.
Andrei Kirilenko
Devin Harris
Elton Brand
Kyle Korver
Chauncey Billups
Anthony Morrow
Nate Robinson
Chris Anderson
Matt Barnes
I'd love to sign Korver for the MLE. He will be a huge difference maker. Re-sign CJ, Blatche, Bogans. Sign a backup C in Andersron.
Deron/CJ/Tyshawn
Joe/Bogans
Wallace/Korver
Blatche/Evans/Teletovic/Hump
Lopez/Anderson
Finally, trade Hump by the deadline or before to see what moves you can get your hands in with his contract.

Re: 2013 Free Agent targets
If we are somehow able to get AK-47, that would be huge. Would be a 6th man of the year candidate if he comes off the bench, and a good starter, if we choose to start him (lets be honest, he has a lot more to offer than Crash right now).

I think AK is a 4 at this point actually (not really sure how Minny's using him, haven't kept up with them)...unlike Wallace, he's actually got the height and length to legitimately play PF full time.

You made alot of good points. I think Bogs should stay in Europe one more year. We really dont need another full year of someone adjusting to the NBA life. Id rather have an established vet who knows the ins and outs of an NBA season.
AK is a wet dream. Id love to have him since he is one of my favorite players but I cant see him leaving 7 mil on the table. I do however see him being an ideal draft night trade target. Say something like Ben Gordon to Minny (They need 3 point shooting) with our 1st round pick and cash, Hump to the Bobcats, AK to the Nets.
Korver also is a very good choice. He would fill a huge void on this team. We need a player who demands defensive attention even when he doesnt have the ball.

Re: 2013 Free Agent targets
Here is my order of MLE targets
AK47
Tony Allen
Dalembert
Korver
Harris
We should trade for AK. Minny has been desperate to acquire players and I can see them being active on draft night. Trading for AK allows us to upgrade the team and keep the MLE.
I see alot of people dont like Tony Allen but I think he would be an ideal fit on this team. Ive come to realize that the biggest problem on PnR defense isnt so much our bigs but our inablity to stay with the ball handler. Even when DWill is healthy he isnt good at covering the Tony Parkers of the world. Having someone who is elite at playing the ball like Allen would be ideal. Plus he causes alot of turnovers and his a major locker room personality who's toughness is infectious.

Re: 2013 Free Agent targets
I guess I'm the only one who's not and has never been a huge fan of AK?
Don't get me wrong, the value would be sick on the Taxpayer's, I'm just saying overall.
I guess I've never been a big fan of wings who can't shoot very well or really injury prone tweeners as a whole.
