One more W and we're in the NCAAs according to Lunardi. Got to make it to Sunday.
UNC has owned us this year. Shid.

I don't think Carolina is good enough to beat Maryland three times.

I thought we'd get crushed by Duke and I think we'll get crushed by UNC.

Re: Official Maryland Terps Thread 2.0
Really, I think the reason the Terps are playing so much better is that Howard is finally playing like we thought he would when he was a freshman. Just getting adequate PG play is such a relief, and you can't win in college without it.
Unlike after the previous win over Duke, yesterday's game looked legitimately earned by MD instead of handed to by Duke. This time they have to follow up with a win rather than a killing loss. Go Terps! BEAT UNC!

My thoughts are that there is no way the ACC was going to let Maryland beat Duke and UNC on their way out of the league. Lots of ticky-tack fouls on Maryland, none on UNC. Oh well.

Man I passed out shortly after the game started and just woke up to find out the Terps lost by 3.
Last night's win gave me hope we could make the tourney too...
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

Many times Jamie Lucky killed the Terrapins' momentum. A bogus charge on Wells after a made basket sent McAdoo to the line for free throws he didn't deserve. The Terps wracked up a lot of cheap fouls and got into the bonus early. That made the whole game feel like an up hill climb.
That said, i don't think officiating decided the outcome. Maryland got to within three at something like 62-65. They had a chance to get to one but missed a layup. UNC hit a three at the other end. Maryland once again had a player go one-on-one and miss a quick layup. The Tar Heels came right back and hit another three and they were down 11 just that quick.
Maryland got all the way back to within 3 again at the end with a chance to tie the game. I thought the last shot was just a bad play out of a time out. Aronhalt's feet were not square and I didn't think he should have been the one shooting. He was cold all game. That should have been Faust or Wells, or a dump inside to Len for a quick two.
Maryland fought really hard and played a good game for the most part. The refs DEFINITELY screwed them repeatedly.
I think Jamie Luckie is at best a bad ref and maybe some sort of crook. I've seen his games before and he makes many terrible calls after one team get scored upon. He CONSISTENTLY makes momentum-killing calls. I really think he could be a crook.

CCJ, I bet that Jamie Luckie was the guy who made the WORST call I've ever seen in a basketball game. It was MD at Duke, and Profit made a driving layup and the duke defender tried to flop and fell down under the basketball. After making the hoop, Profit got the ball and have the duke player the ball. He was T'd up. That caused Gary to get two T's and be thrown out of the game.
Jamie Luckie and Karl Hess are cooked officials.

Re: Official Maryland Terps Thread 2.0
Ed Martin is someone I have heard of and recall he was "Uncle Ed" to the University of Michigan basketball team.
http://www.michigandaily.com/content/ed-martin-dies
Who wouldn't want a rich uncle if that guy wasn't trying to take advantage of them or to lure them into a tawdry world of shady activities, but rather that uncle considered himself somewhat of a genie in a bottle? Rub the bottle and you get a wish. Needy family with an athletic son who is bound for NBA stardom, consider that uncle a godfather of sorts. Not the type of godfather who you owe but the type who gives back because he knows he's blessed to be here and that he has much to give before he goes. I don't know anything about the real Ed Martin or exactly how he rolled. In the end there were a lot of allegations, improprieties, convictions, sanctions, and he ultimately died 10 years ago.
I thought about Ed Martin in this context, if I had means of a rich man I I would gladly move Alex Len's family from Ukraine and take care of whatever short term exigencies needing to be resolved; so the young big man didn't go to the NBA this draft if he really wouldn't mind staying in college. Tim Duncan stayed at Wake Forest a long time. His financial need or personal situation didn't make him go pro early. As a result, he came into the NBA a fully developed man. Duncan came out around the time Joe Smith and Marcus Camby were stars as well. Not long after Rasheed Wallace and HS phenomenon Kevin Garnett turned pro.
Alex Len can develop in the NBA, but he can also develop in college. As a Terrapin fan, I felt and expressed good riddance, that I am tired of Len not showing up every game and the team sputtering. However, Len is a kid growing up in spurts. So are Dez Wells, Charles Mitchell, Nick Faust, Seth Allen, Pe'Shon Howard and Jake Layman. That team grew the last five or so games, kind of like John Wall the last five games. I feel it is a shame they are not ever going to have an NCAA experience together.
If I were an Uncle Ed, I would figure out if someone in Alex Len's family is in need and whether their need is one that stunts his growth or makes him go be a man and work for a living too soon for HIS CHOICE. If so, I would give them money and just say I don't think Alex needs to be bread winner yet. He needs to kick butt in the NCAAs and take names like that Kelly Olynyk kid, then go to the NBA and do the same.
Ed Martin broke roles, got caught, and that's the historical fact. Yet, I bet he helped Webber and a whole lot of people in ways they haven't forgotten. I wouldn't be parting, racketeering whatever, but I probably would be breaking some sort of NCAA rule. I would be doing Len and Turgeon and all Terp fans a solid by front $37,500 and some basic stuff just to help his family get here. Others would let them stay in good family homes, maybe Ukrainian family homes in a safe dwelling; just so the young man can stay in school and study and have all those pretty coeds following him around campus all the time.
I am not suggesting anyone should do what Ed Martin did. He got caught.
No, I'm just saying in a perfect world Alex Len could remain a SCHOLAR ATHLETE and he could team with Roddy Peters, Damonte Dodd, Evan Smotrycz; and Coach Turgeon who would definitely remain if they knew the guy was staying. We saw Jordan Williams leave too soon. Terrell Stoglin IMO left too soon. The program needs to grow and take root. Len could be so much better with one more year of NCAA ball.

Moving on from suggesting someone bribe Len to stay ….
Maryland can really improve if they take the NIT. Nice that they won in round one and UK lost, too.
I didn't see the game but I'm glad to read several players did well for the Terps in a win over Niagara.

Faust had one of his most complete, BEST games, Mitchell's baseline spin move showed great feet, Cleare was strong, and Pe'shon--a guy who HAD been working my nerves--showed mature leadership on defense.
Also, Alex Len is playing terrific. I, for one, am happy for him and the opportunity he created for himself to be drafted high in the NBA. Very Terplike to work hard like that. I gave up worrying about Terps going early when Brad Davis left and John Lucas stayed.
Who wouldn't make that life choice? It's up to us to reload.

I guess no one really cares but a quick shout-out to the Terps for making the final four of the NIT. Of course it's not the tourney but still an accomplishment for this groups of Freshman and Sophomores.
"But by not breaking, the Terps punched their ticket to Madison Square Garden with a 58-57 win, the goal ever since coming to terms with missing the NCAA tournament."

Just let the young boys play! It's truly the only hope at this point.

Re: Official Maryland Terps Thread 2.0
They did their best to give the game away last night. I cringed watching that display of ineptitude by Wells in the final 2 minutes. Len missing free throws was horrible as well. At least he got the block at the end.
Faust nearly fouled the shooter at the end, I'm glad he adjusted himself just in time.
They did play well and playing in Alabama is tough. They need to play all 40 mins to win the NIT..

Re: Official Maryland Terps Thread 2.0
Layman had a nasty sequence where he stole a rebound pass and jammed it over a bigman. Just a sick sequence, and he had a bunch of bigtime plays that game. As one of the announcers kept saying, this guy is going to be a stud.

Len played like a lottery pick against Alabama. Layman also played very well, with key threes, a nice steal followed by a dunk, and most of all he played with intensity that helped the Terps not throw the game away.
Unfortunately, Iowa won at Virginia. I was hoping the Terps got a third crack at the Cavaliers in NYC. They already lost three to the Tar Heels, but I doubt U. VA would have beat them a third time. It's a moot point now. They have to play a tough Iowa team now.
What I hope to see is the Terps at least make the finals.

Jakob Engelke @Jakob_Engelke
Also another big get for Maryland's local recruiting efforts. Mike Locksley strikes again with one of the best recruits from D.C. #Terps

Massachusetts RB Johnathan Thomas commits to Maryland
Maryland snagged its first out-of-area recruit for the class of 2014 on Thursday afternoon when St. John’s Prep (Mass.) running back Johnathan Thomas announced his commitment to the Terrapins.
Listed as a four-star prospect by ESPN.com and three stars by 247sports.com, Thomas is among the state’s top-ranked players, regardless of position. Per ESPNBoston.com, Thomas led the Eagles to the MIAA Division 1 title, rushing for 1,794 yards and 15 touchdowns on 220 carries.
“They envision me being a program changer,” Thomas told ESPNBoston. They’re taking that big step moving into the Big Ten in 2014, and that’s what they said they see in me. And they’re truthful about what. … They said the best player is going to play, so I’m going to be competing to play.”
Thomas joins quarterback Will Ulmer (St. John’s College, Washington D.C.) and offensive lineman Jared Cohen (Mcdonogh School, Owings Mills, Md.) as the current commits for Maryland’s class of 2014.

Breaking #Terps recruiting news: guard Dion Wiley committed to Mark Turgeon moments ago. Huge score for Maryland.
Jeff Ermann @insidemdsports
Wiley was top remaining prospect and is ranked No. 36 in the Class of 2014. With he and Melo Trimble, Turgeon's bagged a major backcourt.

With Dion Wiley and Melo Trimble, Maryland's got the top 2 locals and the best player from both P.G. County and the WCAC. That's new ground.
Jeff Ermann @insidemdsports
It's early for hoops class rankings, but with Dion Wiley's commitment the #Terps' two-man class moves up to No. 5.

So, their backcourt in 2014/2015 will be Roddy Peters as the pure point, Trimble and Seth Allen as combo guards, and Trimble as more of a pure 2 who can also handle the ball well. I'd say their backcourt is looking real good for the long haul. And Turgeon better incorporate more of a running style than he did last season.
