They have 14 picks in the draft to use on depth.

Report: Nnamdi Asomugha Expected To Sign With 49ers

Nnamdi Asomugha is visiting with the San Francisco 49ers and is expected to sign a deal.

The 49ers are looking to improve the cornerback position this offseason.

Asomugha was a three-time Pro Bowler while with the Oakland Raiders.

Asomugha also played collegiately in the Bay Area at Cal.

This is starting to resemble a Pro-Bowl roster. Jeez.

They were saying the same thing about those Eagles...

You wanna know the difference between those two teams? One was actually successful beforehand.

I'm a big fan of building through the draft, but I also like added cheap veterans who already know their roles. Kind of like the linebacker/special teams player that the Niners just picked up from the Bengals.

Mostly talking about Asomugha. Dude is super overrated.

Love me some Dan Skuta!

They are clearly all-in to win right now before they have to pay Kaepernick in 2 years and make painful cuts elsewhere. That's part of why I think they're going to use almost all those draft picks just to have inexpensive depth and developmental guys. I see them taking a bunch of "projects" that probably won't see the field beyond special teams in '13

I remember when Jerry did that in 09 for the boys. I still have nightmares. I'm not sure whether that or that stupid extensions and contracts for players not worth it screwed us more.

The strategy works really well when you have someone like Johnson doing the drafting. Jones couldn't replicate that skill.

On a side note, the Niners added another veteran role player in Craig Dahl. That won't make headlines, but it's nice to have depth.

Those early round picks will solidify our future if done right, and set us back quite a bit if we have another Balmer/Rachal draft. We need starters with our first 3 picks. Not eventual starters several years down the road, guys who could step in right now and play at a high NFL level. I think safety has to be #1a on our board with DT being 1b.

I wouldn't be opposed to the Niners spending the first two picks on those exact positions. Would not mind getting a corner back or tight end as well (in the mid rounds, of course).
