I thought Gay needed a change of scenery too...turns out he's just overpaid.

Re: Tay and Daye for Calderon is regrettable
Blaming the Tay for Calderon swap for our down turn is kind of silly. People have to keep in mind that Calderons first game with the Pistons was the game after Dre injured himself against the Lakers. Dre has played a whopping 13 minutes since Calderon got here. We lost our only defensive big (arguably our best and most impactful player) at the same time we added Jose. That been our biggest problem. The other huge issue is that we have a ton of players that want out and were playing hard to get a new contract or get traded. It's no coincidence that most if not all of those guys stopped playing hard as soon as they realized they were stuck here for the rest of the year.

Rudy Gay is the dividing line between people who actually know something about winning basketball and people who think they do. He's got one of the worst (if not THE worst) contracts in the league, is a defensive liability and can't shoot. The one thing he does well is taking guys he's got a length advantage over down on the block, something not needed when you already have Drummond and Monroe.
Jonas was coming off an ACL and attached to a mid level multi year deal, at no point this year did he have trade value. Stuckey was a free agent two summers ago and got slightly above zero interest.
The Prince/Daye for Jose deal was a great trade. It freed up cap room and hopefully prevented Joe from giving Calderon a big deal in the summer. Without this deal I could have seen Calderon continue his 12-8 type season, Joe become convinced he's the needed answer in the back court, sign him to a 3-4 year $20+ mil deal and be stuck with both the Prince contract and the Calderon deal eating up ~$15 M in cap space.

If Knight is the PG of the future, I'd rather have Tay than an resigned Calderon. I agree with your take on Gay. What has Gay done to deserve that deal. Never an all-star either.

Re: Tay and Daye for Calderon is regrettable
There's an article up by Langlois with Joe talking openly about how he's trying to sell Calderon on resigning.
One thing to consider is perhaps all this swooning of Calderon by the Pistons - treating him like a king and saying how much they want him back at every chance - could just all be Joe laying the groundwork for a potential sign and trade, should Calderon decide to play elsewhere.
If they had just came out and said Calderon was merely an expiring contract, the odds of him doing us any favors regarding a sign and trade would be slim. But if you show that you really wanted to keep him, and gave up Tay just to get him, maybe he's willing to help us out and do a S&T in return, if it came to that.
Either way, if we resign him, or he chooses to leave and he would agree to a sign and trade to get us something in return, I'd be fine with either. I just don't like the idea of letting an asset like that go and get nothing in return. When you are the worst team in the league, you can't afford to give up any assets for nothing.

^Yeah, I think a sign-and-trade is more than likely going to happen...Flip, I'm glad you're finally getting off the Calderon train...It's great to have you back!..

I'm not off the Calderon train. lol
My whole excitement for getting him was how great I think he will compliment Drummond, which we haven't gotten to see yet, but should get to starting tomorrow, if Drummond does come back and start.
So I've been kind of 50-50 this whole time on whether it will work, while waiting for Drummond to come back. But I've been 100% on not letting him leave for nothing. Because he is a great PG that has value and we could either use his services ourselves, or keep him as a trade asset. If he doesn't want to stay though, and we can get something for him in a sign and trade as a last resort, I'd be cool with that.

I think it was time to turn the page on the GTW squad. its unfortunate we couldnt get more for Tay, but by holding on to him too long then doing the right thing and looking to send him to a contender we limited our options.
now all we have to do is get rid of Max, Stuck, Bynum and CV and we can turn the page on the Mutiny era as well and give our young guys a chance to forge their own identity. hopefully if Dre and BK have anything to say about it we'll get back to playing Detroit Basketball.
anybody who is upset we didnt get Rudy Gay in that deal should go check out the Raps board.

Stuckey needs to go. Max/Bynum should be gone on their own this summer. CV, he needs to go too, but he never really bothers me because you don't even really notice him half the time anymore. He either plays good and helps us, or doesn't play good and Frank benches him.
But Stuckey is literally stuck in the rotation no matter how good or bad he plays. We won't ever be good until we get away from being loyal to inconsistent players. Removing Stuckey would at least eliminate that option

I have no idea if Stuckey has any trade value, but either exercise the buyout or trade his a$$ - time to move on.

I agree we need to rebuild it all. The only guys who should be here next year are Drummond, Slava, Monroe, Jerebko, English, Middleton, Singler, and Knight. All others should be gone. Don't resign any of these losers!

Stuckey is a very attractive expiring being teams that need cap room next year will want him plus he can be cut to save said team money if they need to.
Pistons are in a great position with Stuckey for next year. Plus, Stuck will need to play for his next contract as his career is on the line. Win Win!
