I'm starting to warm up to this idea of trading down. Utah has the #14 pick and the #21 pick and would probably be interested in trading up to our #10-11 pick to get Burke. Atlanta has the #18 and #20 pick and might be interested in moving up to grab a center of the future like Len.

For us, the guys that look available in the #10-11 area aren't great fits. We're talking about guys like Burke, Plumlee and Olynyk. A ball dominant PG and a couple of lane cloggers. Yuck. Gobert is also there but I don't trust EG to draft a foreigner who hasn't played in the NCAA's.

The guys in the 15-21 range look like they could be better fits. And with two picks, we could try and plug multiple holes. There are several 3rd guard types like Gary Harris, C.J. McCullom, and Jordan Adams that should be available. And there are several defensive role playing centers like Dieng, Adams and Withey.

I still love Doug McDermott with our 2nd round pick as a stretch four.

That makes sense. Lack of depth is this teams biggest problem right now. A 3rd guard plus Withey would surely be a big help next year.

I don't think late first rookies are going to fix our depth problem. That's essentially what we already have filling out the back end of the roster right now, and those guys now have multiple years of NBA experience. To fix our depth problems, I think we're going to have to draft quality over quantity and fill the rest of the positions with decent free agents.

It also bears mentioning that, unless we bring Martell back, we'll have a need for two starters (SF, C) after next year. So our focus doesn't need to be on just drafting depth.

But we need to go BPA bottom line. If that's a Victor Oladipo or McCollum or some other 6th man type guard, so be it. It could all work out anyway if Martell is extended and DeMarcus Cousins finds his way to DC.

We are keeping Webster unless someone offers more than the MLE. The guy is a perfect fit, he is young, and Wall is asking for him to be retained.

If Oladipo or Porter slips to our pick at the 10-12 spot, then I'd take him and be happy. But if we're looking at Burke, Gobert, Plumlee and Olynyk, I think it would be worth it to place a phone call to Atlanta and Utah. Basically, the BPA who actually fits is probably still going to be available in the 15-20 range so there's no need to take him at #11.

All that said, I might still go ahead and take Burke. He might only get 20 minutes a game on nights when Beal and Wall are healthy and playing well, but there have been enough injuries and off nights that I believe a guy like Burke could probably still average 25-30 minutes as a 3rd guard.

We may be over-thinking this. The Wizards have a long way to go. Injuries happen. Players flake out. We need to draft the BPA (best player available) for the foreseeable future, regardless of position.

Okay then. Who is the BPA?

It's not really that simple. In a draft where there is so little separation among the prospects, the BPA available strategy doesn't always work. That's when you end up with Vesely on a team that already has Seraphin and Booker developing at the PF spot. That's when you draft Ricky Rubio, Johnny Flynn and Ty Lawson all in the same draft, and end up trading the best guy away for peanuts.

BPA sounds great in theory, but it's not always so good in real life. All but the very best talents need to be put in position to succeed. They need some minutes to build confidence, but they also need a veteran "safety net" who can push them to work harder, and take over when the youngster is getting rattled and confidence is fading. They also need a defined role on the team that meshes well with teammates.

Even if Kelly Olynyk (for example) is the BPA, he's a terrible fit alongside Wall and he won't get any minutes behind Nene, Okafor and Seraphin. We would be putting him in a position to fail.

As we have discussed in the past, you use the BPA to order the prospects into tiers. But then you pick the best fit within that tier.

What we have are scrubs that don't belong in the NBA (Vesely,Singleton) and DLeaguers that were filling in at the point when Wall was out.

Why is Olynyk a bad fit with Wall? Any why wouldn't he be able to beat out Seraphin for minutes? Seraphin has been terrible all season long.

And picking Vesely wasn't an example of BPA, it was an example of colossally bad talent evaluation.

The Wizards have little depth and will have significant holes to fill in the near future. They could draft a 3rd guard, a SF to replace Ariza, or a PF/C considering that Okafor and Nene are 30 years old, AND that Okafor's deal expires after next season, AND that Nene is battling injuries.

Wizards ought to be drafting the guy they evaluate to be the best player available.

Guys, I think Ernie will trade the pick for a veteran.

I realize that EG has a history of doing this, but I don't see it happening this time. The problem is the long term payroll. In 2014, Wall will be earning a max and Nene will still be on the books for $13M a year. Beal and Webster will also be making in the $4-5M range. With those guys already on the books, and with an indeterminate number of role players also getting paid, EG's is going to have to find some economical players somewhere. The draft is usually the best place.

If we're going to pay for a veteran, the smart move would be to conserve enough luxtax room to retain Okafor when his contract expires in 2014. That way, we get a good player without sacrificing a pick.

If I'm Wiz FO I think I would grab Dieng if he's still available at 9-11. If gone, I would grab either McCollum (better fit for Wiz than Burke IMO because he can backup both guard positions) or, take a gamble on Len.

If that's who you want, then trade down with Atlanta and Utah and get BOTH of them.

I don't see Atlanta trading up for anyone. They have several holes to fill and I think they are going to try and address them in the draft.

Not too interest in any backup guards. We need Beal and Wall to be playing about 38 MPG anyway.

1. Shabazz : Seems like the type of guy who coasted this year with the whole weight gain thing + Howland Effect + Never seemed to have any interest in anything other than playing in the NBA. Maybe once he gets there he'll start giving ****.

2. Olynyk: New half-court PNR happy Wall having a guy as efficient shooting the ball as Olynyk would do wonders for his game. Wall would average 10APG with a big that can hit the mid range dump off with consistency.

3. Alex Len - Big body, nice jumper, good potential, hope we're not drafting Koufos II.

Koufos is having a phenomenal season -- ORtg of 124, starting center for the second hottest team in the league. The Wizards and Alex Len could both do a lot worse.

Speaking of Len, Chad Ford has his mock draft lottery back up. It's a very different experience for Wizards fans than in recent years as the overwhelming likelihood is that we stay where we are slotted. Every scenario I have come up with so has Ford with us taking Len.

I would be fine going into next season with:

Okafor/Seraphin/Len
Nene/Booker/Singleton/Vesely
Webster/Ariza
Beal/Webster/Temple
Wall/Temple

Maybe bring back AJ Price, but with Wall and Beal playing more minutes (and Webster backing up SG) I think he's a luxury.

I figure next deadline either Ariza or Okafor plus some combo of our young bigs gets moved for another piece.

Okay...I'll be the one to bring it up. Norvel Pelle? What's his deal? how does he compare with other guys with similar skill sets/build such as Perry jones, Austin Daye, Earl Clark, Moe Harkless, John Henson, jujuan Johnson, Ed Davis, etc.

Seems like he has a little Perry Jones in him with his size/athleticism/skillset combo. He has not played in serious competition in the two years after highschool(1 year prep, 1 year off)...Thought?

Alex Len will most likely never achieve being Koufos II. Koufos beat out 4/44 Javale McGee (who's older than Koufos) and starts for one of the best teams in the NBA. He's one of the better centers in the NBA.

And that's way too many excuses for Bazz.

Playing Wall and Beal 38 plus minutes a game year in and year out is a good recipe to getting them injured and/or exhausted for the playoffs - if we ever expect to get to the playoffs. And when one of them does get injured, it gets tiresome to use injuries as an excuse for sucking. This team needs better depth.

There's nothing to judge him by. It'll have to depend on how he impresses with workouts and such.
