Trade our draft pick?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Tue Mar 26, 2013 6:31 pm

Ok, I think most of us agree that McLemore, Oladipo, or Porter would be great to add to our team, and the right picks if they are available to us in the top 5-6.

So here is my fantasy - that we actually win the lottery, and are able to trade down once, maybe even twice, and still get one of those three guys. Top pick could be Noel, trade down a couple of spots and either get a future pick/young solid player/dump a contract; then do the same a couple of more spots down and still land one of those three picks I mentioned.

Not sure what is craizer, expecting us to be able to pull off these trades or actually winning the lottery.

I guess there is also the likelihood we get the 8th-9th pick, and realize all we could get is, well, not much.

If we won the lottery and had the top pick I'd definitely shop it. Trade back as far as 4th in the draft, but I'd rather trade out of the draft completely - trade the #1 overall pick (Nerlens Noel) for a young wing with three or less years in the league. Somebody else picking high in the draft and who had been targeting Noel could then use their pick to grab a new wing (Porter, Oladipo, Shabazz etc) from this draft to replace the one they're trading us.

If we won the lottery I would definitely trade the pick/include one of our big contracts(Charlie V or Jonas) and pick up McLemore, Bazz, or Smart around 4-6...If we get the 7th pick or higher I wouldn't be surprised if Dumars traded the pick for proven talent...

Can't trade this years pick because next years pick is going to Charlotte. You can't have consecutive years without a 1st round pick. But, you could trade this years pick for a late 1st rounder this year or next. But then again, every team is trying to trade down it seems as most boards are talking about it.

You can trade the pick, just have to make it first is all. Not a big deal in my opinion. You agree to it and then announce it on draft night once the pick is made.

Kilo is correct. But speaking of that Charlotte pick, that might be nice to get back as well if we were trading down to them.

You don't trade the #1 pick for lesser parts, you draft the guy and build around him.

^ This, and then some. Rebuilding teams generally don't trade lottery picks, period. Besides, I thought the one thing we all agreed upon is that no one wants to see another "quick fix" like the summer of BG & CV, and the best way to avoid that approach is to build through the draft.

I also think we need to add Marcus Smart and Shabazz Muhammad the OP's list of McLemore, Porter and Oladipo, which means that five of the top eight prospects (Noel, Zeller and Bennett being the other three) are good fits for us. I think that significantly lessens the chance of us trading our pick at all, as both BPA and need seem to be lining up well.

I'd trade Noel for MKG, Beal or Gordon.

I think its too risky to draft a player and then trade him. If he goes on to be a superstar, you don't want that blunder on your resume if you're a GM.

If Noel is the best player and we have a chance to draft him, and he's expected to make a full recovery, then I'd just take him and have the best frontcourt trio in the league.

There's perimeter guys available in FA who are probably just as good as the guys in the draft, if not better. So we don't necessarily have to fill our perimeter needs through the draft.

If we get the #2...take McLemore and run. He will not slip past 2. If we end up with #1, I think you take Noel and worry about fit later. He is a game changer. Drummond/Noel would EASILY be the best defensive 4/5 in the league if Noel put on some weight.

Plan # 1
Trade our pick + Monroe for Barnes + David Lee
Sign OJ Mayo (not my preferred choice but if Dumars is gonna sign a SG might as well be him)

Knight / Mayo / Barnes / Lee / Drummond

Plan #2
Package Monroe + our pick for SF
Sign Josh Smith to form a deadly defensive duo with Drummond

Plan #3
Package Monroe + our pick + Singler + Slava for Love + Barrea
Sign Josh Smith
Sign OJ Mayo
Make the playoffs

Knight / Mayo / Smith / Love / Drummond

What seriously separates Noel from Larry Sanders though?

potential that noel will be better. right now thats it. this may be all sanders is; while many believe noel can be a double-double player while bringing a lot of defense.

i like the idea of trading our pick for that GSW package with monroe but it wouldnt happen and itd depend on where we pick, may make it too much for us.

im just holding off and enjoying us losing as much. let us keep dropping games and hope for the best come lottery time. then ill start thinking about what could be next season, but the losing better stop soon, or dumars needs to be fired.. that said, i hope he doesnt rush out and bomb in FAcy like before.

ugh. dumars sucks.

If Noel is the BPA we take him. The team needs a third big anyway and if he looks like a fit with Drummond we can deal Monroe while he's still on a rookie deal.

I don't understand the rush to be the 9th best team in the East. Next years class is LOADED, we should tank one more season and try to get a guy like Wiggins or Parker as the dominant wing.

^Not so sure about better than Dre...Dre has him beat in rebounding, scores more, and doesn't fall too far behind as far as shot blocking too. Sanders is a terrific shot blocker...I don't think he's anywhere near the prospect Drummond is.

I don't see a point in tanking for Wiggins/Parker...it's a lost cause. Even if we get the absolute worst record, which will never happen, we would only be guaranteed a top 4 pick. Too much uncertainty to waste a season.

Go for FAs now and draft one more piece to add to the core.

Sanders is a better player. He should be the DPOY. Who will be better in 3 or 5 or 10yrs is anyones guess.

I dont have a problem with trading the pick but most here set the bar so low that Im against it. I have np trading the pick for Kevin Love or any other 1st or 2nd all NBA team player. Im not interested in trading the #1 pick for Wilson Chandler or some other 6th man on some other team.

However before you give this serious thought may I strongly suggest you research the 1986 draft and what the impact of the 76ers after they traded the #1 pick overall was. It destroyed the franchise and set it back 20 yrs.
