Realistic Free Agent Targets
So I did a quick glance at this summers free agents, and these were the guys I could see Dumars going after. The big names like Chris Paul/Howard/J.Smith/Iggy are not going to come here, so I went with guys who I don't think will break the bank.
Calderon - As long as he is willing to accept a bench role and a reasonable contract, great vet for Knight.
Vasquez - Top 3 in assists this year, good distributor. Redundant with Calderon, although younger and better D.
Tyreke Evans - Maybe Dumars best chance at a home run. True scorer, questionable bball IQ, needs new surroundings
Corey Brewer - Perfect energy guy, upgrade from Singler at SF. May feel buried in Denver w/ Iggy/Wilson/Gallo
Mareese Speights - Big bruiser with touch, upgrade from Maxiell, good 3rd/4th big
Brandon Wright - Crazy length/athleticism, solid young big behind Dre/Monroe
Larry Sanders - May get a big contract somewhere due to his amazing shot-blocking, great 3rd big
Out of these guys, I would honestly save my money and pass on guys like Vasquez/Tyreke/Sanders who may get overpaid. I would draft a SG or SF, then go after Calderon/Brewer/Speights/Wright. Start Brewer at SG or SF depending on how we draft.
Knight/Calderon
(DRAFT PICK)/Singler/Stuckey
Brewer/Singler/Middleton
Monroe/Speights
Drummond/Wright
Not very sexy, I know, but realistic. Cross your fingers on getting another steal in the draft.

Re: Realistic Free Agent Targets
I was just looking at a list of 2013 free agents, and it isn't pretty. Sux that the two times in our lifetime that we get cap space we have a horrible free agent year.
We might need to trade our cap space away at talented, but overpaid players.

Re: Realistic Free Agent Targets
Is Vasquez a FA?
I'd take him over Calderon if possible. He basically IS Calderon but way younger and could be a longterm piece.
Tyreke Evans almost makes too much sense. He's the only FA with star potential. He's been de-valued somewhat over the last few years so he could come fairly cheap. He's a former top draft pick. All traits Dumars usually goes after. With all of our capspace, I don't see any reason not to offer Evans a 7-8 mil/yr deal.
Other than that though, yeah this FA class is pretty weak. Figures that we finally have lots of capspace and a high draft pick, and its in the summer of one of the worst FA classes and worst draft classes in recent history.

He has one more year on his rookie deal. But yeah, he would be a PG I'd look at over Calderon. He's 6'6 too so Knight can always guard the better offensive player.

The only guy I think that has impact potential on that list is Evans. I'm not really interested in the rest. It would take at least a deal starting at 8 mill to land him. Not sure if i want to do that, I'd like to take on salary dumps on one year deals to collect more assets in the forms of picks/young talent.

Re: Realistic Free Agent Targets
Why do we have to blow our cap room this summer?
Entering 2014 the only guys under contract will be Monroe, Knight, Drummond, Singler, Jonas, Middleton and this years draft pick.
2014 Free agents:
Paul Pierce
Loul Deng
Dirk
Danny Granger
Eric Bledoe (restricted)
Kobe Bryant
Pau Gasol
Larry Sanders (R)
Evan Turner (R)
Marcin Gortat
Demarcus Cousins (R)
Kyle Lowry
I'm fine with taking signing youngish guys on one year fliers (ala Mayo in Dallas) but I don't see the point of giving a guy like Igoudala a max contract (and with the amount of other teams who have cap space this summer people are crazy if they think he's getting less) or giving multi year deals to the next Ben Gordon or CV31.
I think the best course of action is to rent out our cap space to teams desperate to avoid the tax (like Cleveland with Memphis this year) for draft picks/rookie salary guys.

I'd like to sign Stackhouse actually. Bring in a hard ass leader who would know his role as a mentor/support type but hard minded and still tough that would hopefully rub off on our young guys. I think we have too many mellow nice guy types who need a little sand paper.

I wouldn't mind that at all.

I want to bring in Chauncey and Big Ben for those reasons. give them both 15-20 minutes of burn but mainly have them around as role models and player/coaches.
The biggest failure on this team is having leadership among players. The Max, Bynum, Stuckey, CV31, Calderon crew is too concerned about their next contract/employer and the Monroe/Drummond/Knight/Jonas/Singler/Middleton crew has never won.
Our best veteran leader is probably Corey Maggette. Let that sink in.

Re: Realistic Free Agent Targets
Ben hasn't played in a year - I think he's been retired. My beef when Billups was here was that he was too chill, he'd be the steadying leader but our dudes need an edge added to their games. Also he is still looking to play and win. Was was all for bringing Ben back this year but I think that ship has sailed. I'd prefer Billups to Calderon, mostly because I haven't given up on Knight as a point guard.
With our FA money, I'd look to bring in character guys from winning teams. We don't need guys to come in and be the stars here - we need players to come in and help Monroe, Drummond, Knight, #1 pick become the stars here because of that core doesn't develop we're screwed regardless of what FA comes in.

Mayo would be Ben Gordon 2.0 and Chandler would cost more than any combination of Stuckey, Jerebko, and/or DNPCV so i'll pass.

You're over-valuing Chandler and forgetting the negative effects of the new CBA...Smaller market teams don't want to be close to the tax line...

Corey Brewer wants to come back to Denver. Denver values Corey Brewer more than Chandler.
Stuckey + 2nd round pick should get it done. If not, include Singler.

Re: Realistic Free Agent Targets
Vazquez i would love on this team, he's a better version of calderon and is more a lillard type pg where he doesn't hold the ball for forever, but rather makes plays. Calderon's only ellite pg ability is to get the ball to players in their comfort spots on the floor.

This simply isn't true...Chandler is one of Denver's most important players. He provides an offensive spark of the bench who can go off on any given night and plays good defense at the 3/4. Read any article about their recent winning streak and you will find that it will either include Lawson or Chandler. If by "values more" you mean starting, Brewer only gets .4 more minutes per game than Chandler, has all around worse numbers, and a horrible tendency to leak out for potential fast breaks when they're not there. Chandler is also on one of the best contracts in the league, and Brewer will probably demand quite a bit of money.
Stuckey literally makes no sense for them as a team. They already have 2 solid PGs in Miller and Lawson, they have Brewer and Iguadola, and Hamilton is showing promise. They trade a guy who is on a great contract for a few more years for a guy on a poor contract for 1 more year and a second round pick? Chandler is too good for them to trade him for our scraps. Stuckey just isn't marketable.
I'm also weary on Vasquez due to the fact that NO's offense tends to put up a lot of fake numbers for their PGs. Darren Collison especially had a good year in NO, then kind of died out when he got traded. Heck even Roberts racked up 18 assists the other night and he's not exactly all too good.

IF you watch Vasquez play, you definitely can tell its more a fact of his skill than the offense being run
