highest salary = 30% of salary cap?

i read from the cba faq that the highest salary a player can get is, depending on his NBA experience, 30% of the salary cap.

if true, none of the players should be able to get >$20M per year in any season. but in the salary data, there are a number of players getting >20M per year, e.g. Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal etc.

could someone explain a bit why so? million thanks.

(another question on contract length. the cba faq says that the maximum no. of years a player can be signed for is 6, depending on which exceptions used. but then in the contract data, some players were signed for over 6 years. i'm confused...)

It could be that Kobe's contract was from an earlier CBA and that rule applies to all contract agreements reached under the new CBA.

A player's max contract is never less than 105% of his previous salary. So if a player's previous salary was $20 million, and 30% of the cap was $16 million, he could nevertheless start his new deal at $21 million, which is a 105% increase. That is what those guys did.

2 Also, the nominal max salary "limit" is 35%, not 30%

1 The limits have changed when the CBA changes
2 Current limit on new deals is currently 5 years or less ...having 6 years can only happen when a player signs a 5 year extension prior to the final year of his rookie contract ...
3 Many free agents are only eligible to sign for 4 years or less
