Posey, SF Giants agree to 8-year extension for $161 million

Post#1 » by RIPskaterdude » Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:11 pm

UPDATE, 12:00 P.M.: The Giants will announce Buster Posey’s eight-year, $161 million extension at today’s Play Ball lunch. It’s a $167 million contract that includes his $8 million already agreed to for 2013 and runs through 2021. It includes a $21.4 million option for 2022, raising the total potential value of his current deal to $188.4 million.

This is the largest contract in Giants history and the largest ever given to a catcher, though, of course, he won’t be a catcher for all of the deal.

ORIGINAL POST: The Giants and 2012 NL Most Valuable Player Buster Posey have agreed on a long-term contract extension that will keep the catcher in San Francisco through 2021.

The deal includes a one-year option. Dollar figures were not immediately available.

The Giants and Posey reached a one-year, $8 million for 2013 during spring training.

Wow, crazy contract. But he's worth it, will be interesting to see when he moves to 1B full time in the future.

Dodgder fan...so everything I'm saying here will sound like hate....but I'm going for it anyway.

With Cain and Bum signed, I don't see anybody else who they should worry about locking up long term at a high pay rate.
Panda is fat and we don't know where his body is going.
Brandon Belt has some more proving to do...plus 1st is likely where Posey is going to end up after when he's 30 anyway.

Brandon Crawford should probably be the next career Giant...and thats because his SS defense was freakin spectacular.

Lincecum should be tendered some garbage he won't accept so some other team will sign him and leave u with a draft pick.

but this is a great deal for the league's 1a catcher and the face of the Giants franchise.

panda always has been fat and that never stopped him. he'll be fine unless your concern is whether or not he ends up on cover of gq

Good move by the Giants, sign him now and you don't have to worry about it in the future.

If Posey wins another MVP in the next 2 years, he probably would have gotten 200 million from another team. Great deal.

Pretty sure Sandoval said hes going to give him self two years to slim down.

Anyways, good deal for both sides.

pretty sure he said that too.

funny...when does his deal end?
oh...2 years.
he knows he has to drop the pounds and field his position better for this team to wanna invest significant dollars in him at a premier defensive position after his age 28 season.

I'm pretty sure ppl will argue with me just to do so.
it's not a big deal...the 7 guys in the field outside of Posey in 2012 were different from their 2010 roster.
they've locked down every player they need to lock down moving forward.

except maybe crawford.

Yup. 100% correct. He knows that he'll get more money if he does slim down.

Have either of you guys ever heard of Miguel Cabrera?

Or Prince Fielder?

Oh, and this is a great deal for the Giants. I could've damn well guaranteed that the Yankees would have thrown everything at Buster to get him in pinstripes when his old deal was up.

It's pretty nuts to look at the payroll for the Dodgers and the Giants and see the distribution of talent.

Too bad he's not even close to being as good as those guys.

I'm just saying in terms of weight and what you guys are talking about. Neither Prince nor Miguel dropped drastic amounts of weight just to get a big deal. The Tigers knew they were both big dudes who were going to produce.

Panda will do the same thing, but to a slightly lesser extent, obviously.

Fielder and Cabrera are just too good, of course whoever is signing them is going to overlook the potential issues that come with being that big.

Its different with Sandoval because he's not going to produce at an amazing level, so whoever is signing him, probably wont overlook his weight.

Who cares about Sandoval's weight? He was a monster in the World Series ..

I'd rather have a fat guy who can hit the ball when it matters than a skinny athletic guy batting .123 .. This is baseball, not a fashion shoot

Besides, there are plenty of "heavier" guys that are having amazing careers, so that shouldn't be an issue IMO

help me understand this.
everybody understands the risk the Tigers took signing two bad defenders to their corner IF positions....those 2 guys are better hitters than Pablo...

yet the Giants are going to do the same thing....in the National League?

k.

if u think the Giants, as good as their FO is, are going to give a 28 year old, fat, butcher of a 3b a 6-7 year 100 million dollar plus deal...go ahead, it's a free country...but don't come back here saying "i told you so"....even if they do it...it's a dumb idea...especially at those numbers.

P.S.
is he even a better defender than Miggy?...srs

The Dodgers are paying guys like Ted Lilly, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Bobby Abreu $10+ mill to not play very well.

i disagree.

LF since Manny left has been awful for us.
CC is an upgrade even if he's half the guy he was in tampa...IF....big if.

Beckett pitched well for us after the trade

lilly and Abreu...Uribe...sure.

but the other 2?....just stigma from stinking in Boston...speculation/ betting/ hoping they fail because of how it ended in Boston and because ppl hate when teams go on spending sprees.

they have yet to "stink" as dodgers...and i don't think they will.
