Offseason plan

Post#1 » by Natopher » Mon Apr 1, 2013 5:35 am

This is one of my ideas about what the Pistons should do this offseason. I have a few others that don't involve Trey Burke, but this one does.

1) Trade Brandon Knight and Greg Monroe to Washington for Bradley Beal & Washington's First. This might seem like a lot to give up for Beal, and it probably is, but the kid looks legit to me. Not sure if Washington would bite on this trade, even without the first, but you never know.

2) Draft Trey Burke & Victor Oladipo. I know that a lot of people aren't 100% sold on Burke, and I'm not either, but I feel like he has all the skills you want a PG to have. If your main complaint about a player has nothing to do with his talent, that's pretty good.

Oladipo would be the perfect complimentary player to have next to Burke. Great defensively, has a jump shot and is a great finisher.

3) Sign Andre Iguodala (12mil per/4 years), Al Jefferson(14mil per/4 years), and Samuel Dalembert(~5-6mil per/3 years). I'm pretty sure that this will keep us below our cap for next year and I feel like all these players would fill needs.

Al Jefferson would be the perfect player to replace Monroe, gives the same production, has a better mid range jumper, and plays better defense (not great, but better). I also feel like Jefferson would fit well next to Drummond because his athleticism would let him guard PFs while Al Jeff guards Cs.

Dalembert would be the first big off the bench, and would be very useful for rebounding and defense off the bench, something we're severely lacking.

Iggy as an athletic SF and lockdown defender, and all around great player. He'll give us a legit SF which we haven't had since

This would give us a lineup of:
Burke/Stuckey
Beal/Oladipo/English
Iguodala/Middleton/Singler(I'm so sick of Singler)
Drummond/CV/Jerebko
Jefferson/Dalembert/Slava

1st idea sounds good to me, but does WAS bite? They have no need for Knight. If so, depending on where we what the draft mocks are looking like and where our pick ends up, I would not mind ending up with Burke, Beal and one of Porter/McLemore/Shabazz to go along with a few FA signings. I don't see Iggy coming here, but would welcome him...and I agree big Al would be a great fit.

So all in all I like the plan, and I think WAS considers it if they end up with pick 10 or 11 and then take Burke at 10...assuming he's there but I'd rather have McLemore/Bazz/Porter all before Dipo. Which isn't to say I don't like Oladipo, I'm just think we need someone who can score at the wing position.

I agree about them not really needing Knight, but a lot of teams run 2 PGs and I figured that they probably wouldn't do just Monroe for Beal straight up because they already have Nene and Okafor so by throwing in a PG/SG they would probably be more willing to do it. Especially seeing as Wall is bigger than the majority of PGs so he could guard SGs while Knight guards PGs.

The second player we draft could really be any SG for my plan to work, I just picked Dipo because he's very defensive minded which compliments Beal well.

If we're trading Monroe/Knight to Washington, it has to be for Wall, plus maybe something minor. Beal's good, but if we're trading Monroe/Knight there, Wall has to be coming back.

Knight and Monroe for Beal+Washington's unproven 1st rounder??? :nonono: Come on, why in the hell would Detroit do this...That would probably be a fire-able offense for Dumars...

The best free agents this offseason are big men who would be capable of replacing Monroe's production. The worst free agents are wing players. Makes sense to sign a big man to replace Monroe and trade him for a wing. Beal is 19, since the all star game has been shooting 48% FG, 47% from 3, and averaging 17.3ppg. He has an amazing jumper and is already better than Mayo, the best SG we could acquire in free agency. This is a way of maximizing the talent we can acquire in the offseason. If you want the Pistons to be good next season, the best way of doing it is trading Monroe for the best wing we can acquire for him, and Bradley Beal looks like a stud in the making.

^Beal is good, but it seems like we're giving up too much for him...We're giving up 2 studs for 1 stud...Why not just pick McLemore or Muhammad in the draft and keep it safe?..

I just don't feel like they'll be overly good in the NBA. Obviously I could be very wrong, but I don't think either will be better than an average NBA SG. And Beal just looks like he can do it all. Knock down open jumpers, create his own shot, finish at the hoop, he really impresses me.

As much as I like Moose and his potential (I really am a big fan, I think that if he just gets a jumper he'll be set) I think that if we can acquire a big man who'll give us the same production and then it makes sense to trade Monroe for player like Beal.

That said, I absolutely feel like throwing Knight into the deal is too much, however from a realistic standpoint, given Washington's roster I highly doubt if they'd trade Beal unless they were getting back a guard.

I agree with you, Beal is probably better than any SG in this draft...Muhammad may give Beal some competition if he blossoms the way I think he can...McLemore seems like a Rip/Ray Allen type player, I don't see him creating his own shot that much in the NBA...

I may be wrong, but I think what we saw tonight is what we're going to see from Monroe more often now that he's playing his true position...18pts, 10rebs, 4ast, 2stls, and 2blks is something serious for 22yr old big man, and also add the freak athlete Drummond playing next to him...We have a special duo in the front-court...I wouldn't trade Monroe for nobody but Cousins(that's my opinion)...Monroe obviously has his defensive flaws, but I honestly think a good coach could fix that...

Monroe for Beal...makes sense to me!

Washington build around Monroe and Wall
We build around Drummond, Beal and Knight

Or Monroe for Klay Thompson

GSW build around Monroe, Barnes and Curry
We build around Drummond, Klay and Knight

We have the cap space to sign a legit PF to start alongside Dre... Josh Smith, Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson, David West are all free agents.

If we're going to pay Monroe the maximum when his time comes you could at least try to deal him for a quality wing player and pay the maximum to a different big man

I don't see it happening but it does make sense

Indeed.

Maybe Monroe/Singler for Thompson/Barnes.

Wouldn't touch Monroe for Beal

How is trying to maximize the team's talent hate? Monroe is good, and if there were really good SGs/SFs in free agency this year then there's no way we trade Monroe. But the fact of the matter is that Beal is better than any SG we're going to get in the draft or free agency this year. Throw in the fact that there are several big men free agents this offseason who would be more than capable of replacing Monroe's production, I don't know why you wouldn't do it.

Not to mention that Bradley Beal is only 19 and would have 3 more years on a rookie contract where as Monroe is going to get a massive pay increase after this year. Can you honestly sy you'd rather have Mayo on a large contract and Monroe on a close to max contract than Beal on a rookie contract and someone like Al Jefferson on a deal ~14mil per?

I think McLemore and Shabazz might be better than Beal long-term.

Oladipo is worse offensively, but better defensively. Might rather have Beal than VO.

I'd rather have Shabazz and Monroe over whatever laughable crap you wrote. Honestly.

Beal has nowhere near Monroe's value. Monroe could have been easily the #1 pick the year he got drafted in a redo draft, he would be in the discussion with Wall and George for the #1 pick and no one else in that class.

The hate for Monroe around here is pathetic.

Think it depends on how the draft falls. If Pistons end up w/ Otto or any position aside from SG, a Monroe/Beal trade makes sense.

There's also a good chance that whoever Detroit drafts is a bench player next year if Pistons are successful in free agency.

A Beal/Knight backcourt really spaces the floor for a slashing 3 and for Drummond to develop in space.

Sign Iggy and Smith and the Pistons may have home court advantage in the first round next season.

These kind of ideas are based less on value for value and more on the "big picture". Moose doesn't provide enough offense to make up for his defensive lapses...and we don't know if how much more he will improve. He's not athletic, or particularly strong and struggles in the clutch & against better athletes.

Beal doesn't match Moose's value, but the idea is dependent on replacing him with someone who is a better fit in FA. Like Al Jefferson, and then getting a young SG like Beal who can do it all as opposed to the redundancy of two starter PFs, and lets be honest...Moose will not be a sixth man. He'd leave if that was the role we gave him, and rightfully so.
