OT: Need some advice on these CUNY schools
Hi guys,
I figured alot of you are from the tri-state area and may have a good grapple on the CUNY schools here. This isnt for me as I've graduated from St Johns already, but this is for my younger sister who is about to graduate from high school.
She wants to do Nursing has gotten into some private schools (but not enough aid was given) so she is looking at these CUNY schools:
City Tech
York College
Lehman College
Medgar Evers ?
Can I get any perspective or thoughts about these schools? I looked up and saw Nursing is very tough to get into at Cuny schools, so I've mentioned to look back up Health Professions that she could pursue if something falters there.
Any advice would be grateful...Right now, I think she should look at City Tech or York.

Re: OT: Need some advice on these CUNY schools
why not state schools? I prefer Sunys to Cunys, thats my personal preference.
Btw I am a hundred percent on this but I hear QCC has a very competitive nursing program. I knows its only a cummunity college but do look it to it.

QCC is great, my gf is about to graduate from NYU but she took some courses there and said if she had to do it all over again should start at QCC.
Just a thought to any young ones out there.
As for your question about SUNY...need to stay in the city, and also time has passed on applying to those. It just the ones above as well as Adelphi University, Hofstra and a couple other private schools.
But out of pocket is a bit much and honestly, I have not heard much about Adelphi before

Re: OT: Need some advice on these CUNY schools
CUNY is really awesome. as long as she's focused, she'll get a great education out of any of them.
hunter college has a great nursing program with an excellent job placement track record if she's interested in that.
borough of manhattan community college has a great LPN program, but it's really hard to get into because of the demand. you basically need a 4.0 to qualify.
york is a great school all around. as is lehman. for a city school system, CUNY is really astounding.
i don't know much about medgar evars, but i've only heard good things. same with city tech.

I go to City Tech, it's cool. Really nice environment, right by fulton mall. I think York College would be a better place to go to though.

Kingsborough Community College is such an underrated school in NY. They have a great nursing program, teach you what you need, and it's pretty easy. Oh and at about 1750 per semester and free winter/summer classes for full time students you cant really beat it. You get 2 years within the Cuny system which will readily transfer to any other SUNY/CUNY. Once you get past the stigma of Community Colleges, it's a no brainer for a place to start at.

Hey man, can you please give me a bit more as to why you think York might be better?
I looked and saw York was in Jamaica...Any insights you picked up about York as to why it may be better?
What do you like/dislike about City Tech?

Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn it's on Sheepshead bay. Best campus in NYC (any school) hands down.

From what I know York is just flat out a better school, heard the education is better there too.
And I like City Tech for their diversity, a lot of different cultures at that school. Like really wide. The professors are really helpful after classes, it's a school really focused on Math, Engineering & Science.
I don't know if it's a dislike but the school itself is mehh to me, education wise it doesn't feel like they do anything special or noteworthy.

I know im going to get blasted for saying this but I find the CUNY schools underwhelming. You pretty much get what you pay for. The campuses are ugly, the administration process is very unorganized, and they have really old technology. SUNY all the way. Not to sound pretentious or anything, but I find the majority of students at the CUNY's are not as well educated as the SUNY's. The curriculum is much easier than a typical SUNY. The only upside is that its local and really cheap.

Having atten-ded CUNY and SUNY I agree with you.
Depends on what you want to do but you cant beat the price of CUNY tuition

I'd rather pay a little more and go to a SUNY. The difference in education is night and day and its a WAY better experience. Literally the majority of my classmates in the masters program I was enrolled in could not even write in proper English. This is a masters program! If I handed in a paper filled with spelling and grammar errors at Binghamton, you better believe I'd hear it. A lot of the CUNY's have no standards and accept mostly everyone. College is really crucial for developing life skills and I don't believe the CUNY"s prepare you well.

Re: OT: Need some advice on these CUNY schools
Most people from Baruch, Hunter and in certain other cases may disagree with you there...But like someone said, Going to Bing or Stony Brook is good and all but you are paying 2x as much for the semester and for those that dont have a car and live in the city its a pain in the ass to get to or dorming is even more money.
There are good SUNY's and bad SUNY's i remember...Same probably goes for CUNY's

I like what you said about City Tech there...The diversity and focus on science. I understand it really isnt a campus and I know York actually has more of a campus setting but from what I read the security at that school is like trying to enter a prison to visit someone.
Also, I just dont know how nice it is over there...Thanks for your opinion. Will share those thoughts

Re: OT: Need some advice on these CUNY schools
Kingsborough is one of the best nursing community colleges in the NY, it's only a 2 year associates program. The campus is beautiful and located on the beach. I currently go to City Tech but I've been in both Baruch and Kingsborough(graduated). If you're looking for any technology(including nursing) related major City Tech is your best bet(mostly because of scheduling). City tech doesn't really have a campus though, its more just a few buildings next to each other, also the main building looks more like a high school on the inside. If you're looking into getting a business oriented field (Accounting, Business Administration) I'd recommend Baruch if you can get in (3.0 GPA requirement if i remember correctly). Baruch is overall the best over CUNY school and the new building and library are very nice(minus the broken escalators). No idea which schools are better when it comes to liberal arts majors but because of the new CUNYFIRST system they'll all have basically the same general ed requirements anyway.

What are studying at City Tech right now? I hear Nursing is very hard to get into City Tech, but I guess thats at any schools...Just get good grades, apply and then get in. if not Im guessing their health professions area is good?
How is City Tech when it comes to teachers helping, and the communication from the financial aid office?

I'm studying Computer Systems Technology right now, basically IT. I don't think its very hard to get in to City Tech in general, they were actually doing direct admissions in the winter. You just come to the school with all the documents they ask for and they evaluate everything right there. Nursing might have a special program which only takes a certain amount of students every semester though(same thing in Kingsborough). I can ask my friend in nursing about it if you have any more questions.

Could you please? I'd really appreciate it. Send me a PM or reply in this thread if you like. Just want to get a answer quick enough as my sis needs to make a decision this week. Obviously she should doing this sort of due diligence but she doesnt know anyone at these schools and well neither do I.
