I hate that word, I feel like it was just invented/discovered recently and now everyone feels like they need to use it all the time

there is a lot wrong with the american education system
on a personal economic level, the ridiculous costs with little to no government assistance leaves kids graduating at the age of 22 with 6 figure debts, which is mind boggling to me. in australia the government subsidises your college education with a interest-free loan, which you only pay back once your income reaches a certain threshold.
academically, i spent a year at the uni of miami, which is a borderline top 50 school in the states i think. i took 300-500 level classes that were directly equivalent to classes back home in sydney. i had a 3.75 gpa for those classes which is at least equivalent if not better than my grades back home while going out 4-5 times a week, attending roughly 1/2 my classes and only studying/writing papers the night before they were due. the quality of writing was significantly lower, with papers that would score (generously) a 65-70 back home easily getting an A to an A+ (95+)
my best friend who was at uni of wisconsin madison which i think is like a top 20 school found the schoolwork equally uninspiring
therein lies my lack of faith in the american education system
**** changes when you have the population the US has in comparison to Australia.
As far as grading, you went to a party school and rankings don't mean **** unless its for your major.

He's got a point about cost though. There should be no reason why you need to immerse yourself in debt and consign to sub-standard living conditions just to get an education. The quality of education is pretty high and therefore its understandable that it is valuable but sooner or later you might see students going to school abroad just to save up on money.

Cost is a real issue for sure, but to say its easy and a joke is indicative of his own work ethic and course/school/major decisions more than anything else.
Like most things in life you have to put something in to get anything out.

Yeah I never supported that argument. The cost for education has always been my only gripe over the US universities.

Re: Comm Thread XXXVII: drug free
To me it's not the cost of the education, it's how little it pays after. The ROI is getting pretty slim now.
We have companies that would rather pay temporary citizenship for people rather than hire/train US citizens.
And we have a Government that has no interest in setting and enforcing reasonable limits on immigration. I'm talking about 'educated immigration' here.
Then we have companies that want to take advantage of cheap labor abroad but don't think they should have to pay taxes on the money they bring back to the US.
I think US colleges don't charge enough for foreign students, and on top of that, once a student is here, it's easier for them to stay here to work after school.
Not saying immigrants or immigration are bad, the opposite in fact... Just that the current rates are overwhelming our financial, educational and healthcare resources in the US.

Slava could weigh in on this, but there are limited visa slots of each type and I don't think it's as easy to stay here as you make it out.

What if in the future, credit ratings, work ethic, and good character are the qualifications for high paying jobs in the future.. does that show true intelligence and awareness?

I'm not saying it's easy in a vacuum... Just easier than it should be. There are too many visas for the amount of work available.
Also, I don't blame anyone for wanting to live and work here or go to school here. And I don't think the Government is the real issue, although they could be doing more to protect future US workers.
The real problem is us... We're lazy as a nation and unwilling to pay a reasonable amount for anything. We've become a Walmart culture, and we're starting to experience the ramifications.
Everyone is looking for Filet-Mignon at Burger King prices, and something's got to give.
I think it may even be a pride thing... It's not cool to be proud to be an American anymore because people think that makes you some sort of Fascist. And I think as a result, we're not 'too proud' to accept any crappy 'product' that someone tries to sell us. We don't take pride in what we produce, that includes what our schools produce. We're not willing to pay for quality... Whether it be a TV or a Graduate.

The talent gap between the demand for STEM graduates and the current supply in the US is alarmingly high, there is a reason why skilled immigrants are so highly wanted and its not because they are getting paid any cheaper. US has benefited a great deal from these people and it can be argued that the country would not be a world leader in science and technology without their contributions.
These people also pay higher taxes like social security, medicaid and all the other stuff without actually benefiting from any of that.
A job loss can be tough for an average guy but the immigrant just has to clean up his house and leave the next day in case of such an issue.

Come on man, you guys get in-state fees waived whereas the foreign students don't get federal aids, have to pay an additional out of state tuition fee that comes upto 3x the original course fee and they work for measly amounts on research lab funds to finish their academic theses, which is then used with patent protection by the industry.

Re: Comm Thread XXXVII: drug free
Get em Slav! Like you said, lack of qualified US employees is probably the biggest issue. It's Americans who don't want to put in the work to qualify, not foreigners stealing jobs (at least at an educated job levels).
Also I'm an incredibly proud American, but I'm not ignorant to our flaws and I feel it's a social obligation to advance global society as an American and not just worry about the lazy fat kid who want life to be handed to him on a silver platter who lives beside me but thinks they deserve $60,000 a year because they got a poli sci or business degree.

Kilroy: What you get payed for your degree is based on what you major and the amount of effort you put into it.
I do agree that you should do what you want as a career, but if you expect to get paid a lot for something that isn't as hard or in demand as someone else than that person cant bitch about it. (not talking about you)
Also i've met people with these undesirable degrees and they actually did a lot of things like internships and outside work and when they finished school they had pretty sweet jobs.
This isn't a communist country where we all get paid equally and I don't want it to be that way.
When I finish school and become a doctor ill be damned if someone tells me that I don't deserve to get paid what I get paid. I am busting my ass off for my degree and those lazy asses that sat in your couch watching TV have no right to say anything.
Anyway what I do agree with Florence is that school should be more affordable. For some reason being in the lower class helps out a lot. I basically get paid like 90% percent of my school and have taken out very small loans.
Awaiting rebuttal....
