Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread (as of 3/19)
The Detroit pick is probably top ten imo, I think we get it at #9 or #10 next season.
I like their core and think they will make a lot of noise after 2015 imo.
Drummond is still going to take some time to work on his post game and free throws, Monroe won't get much better than he is now and Knight needs to prove he can play the point full time.
A team of Knight/Shabazz/Singler/Monroe/Drummond is nasty in 3-4 seasons.

Biz Gilwalker wrote:I don't know. Knight, Monroe, and Drummond will all be one year older and more experienced. They have cap space this summer. I think if they amnesty CV they might have enough to pick up a SF like Iguodala. If they do that, they could potential be looking at a playoff run. Remember this is the eastern conference where Milwaukee has a 5+ game lead on the 9th seed. The Bucks.
Is there any reason to think that Iggy actually wants to play for Detroit? I mean I read that Atlanta has enough capspace this summer for three max contracts.

IMO Drummond is as far off as Biz.
ntsap wrote:I can see Portland as #9 or #10 next year and we get their pick hopefully then . If Detroit drafts a sg that can fit with knight and sign iggy and a quality back up pf/c or 2 I can see them getting the 8th seed. So that's #13 or #14 from Portland and #15 from Detroit and like #31-34 for us to move up in next years deep draft. If we get the Portland pick we should move down and get rid of Tyrus in the process.?
The Portland pick will still be top 12 protected next year. I don't see Dumars making that much progress in one year. Why would we trade down just to get rid of Tyrus when we can always amnesty him?

^RE: Portland pick. He was saying that Portland could finish 9-10 in the standings, not draft order.
I definitely don't see Detroit making the playoffs next year, but it's definitely feasible that they end up with the 9th or so pick (top 8 protected next year). Getting a top 1 protected pick (2015) or unprotected pick (2016) is definitely enticing, but I think the Pistons are improving enough that next year is our best chance to maximize the draft placement (not to mention the overall strength of the draft).

What I'm worried about is Portland and Detroit doing what the warriors did last year and Portland gets the 12th and Detroit the 8th.

That would be great! Then neither team will land a guy to get them over the hump next year giving us both their picks in supposedly the deepest draft in ten years!

This is exactly why I've been hoping the Blazers could pay off their pick debt THIS summer, not next. I wouldn't have even cared if it was a #13 or #14 pick in the lottery.
At the rate Portland is going, it's pretty clear they're going to keep the pick this year. Now I can only hope the Blazers get better next year so they can push their pick down in the 20's.

That is always a tall order. It takes time to get better, and there are always other teams getting better right along with you.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread (as of 3/19)
I agree, projecting POR to improve over the 12 pick in 2014 or expecting DET to have a better pick than 5th in 2014 assumes an improvement of both teams next season while assuming no improvement in the other teams around them. Neither city seems like a prime FA destination either. You could paint rosy scenarios for the Blazers and Pistons but you could do the same thing for their competition. You also have to factor in worst case scenario involving injuries to key players. And that can happen to any team.
In a perfect world Charlotte enters the 2014 draft with picks 1, 2 or 3 + pick 9 (from DET) + pick 13 (from POR).
Then we go shopping.
In a fantasy world we draft Wiggins and package 9 + 13 to move up for a second high pick. In such a deep draft, it's possible.

I am not very happy with Portland, it could not be more obvious they have been tanking for the past month or so.

They won't.

I do not get why. I would think that they would rather convey the pick this year rather than next year in a deep draft. Maybe they fear loosing key players to free agency this year.

Exactly, the top 7 out West are not going anywhere so that leaves them one spot to fight for and even with Utah facing uncertainty with some contracts at the end of this season even if they drop Portland would still have to beat out the Lakers and Mavs (I am sure they will spend some offseason money) for the eighth spot. That is not even taking Minnesota into account because they could be a bottom seed playoff team IF they could stay healthy.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread (as of 3/19)
It would be hilarious to me if Dallas or LA/Utah won a top 3 pick via the lottery and pushed PDX down to 13 (sending us their pick).
I'm not even sure I want it this year, but that would still be a worthwhile result after watching them try so hard to keep it.

You just know if thats the case, it would be at the cost of our number 1 pick.

I was talking about our luck, if it was to occur it would still cost us somehow.

Re: The Portland Pick Watch Thread (as of 3/19)
Let's say Portland trades away Aldridge to the Cavs.. does that boost the value of the future POR pick because it opens the possibility of it becoming unprotected in 2016?
Or can Portland field a strong team with Lillard, Waiters, Batum, Bennett, Hickson and Thompson and Matthews?

You're assuming LMA is being traded for Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters.
