Yahoo: Jays lead league in unruly fans

Post#1 » by s e n s i » Tue Apr 9, 2013 12:05 am

The crazy-looking guy who caught the bat at the Toronto Blue Jays game last week? He's a model citizen compared to some of the people who have been acting wild and unruly at Rogers Centre so far this season.

In a year in which expectations are high for the Blue Jays, the fans are doing their part to assure the Jays lead the league — in shenanigans.

lol no kidding. so many guys scrapping too, not just in the nosebleeds, but also the lower bowl and out on bremner. of course none of these fights are life-threatening like you'd see from niners fans vs raiders fans or at venues overseas, but these "jays fans" go to the games hoping to entice a fight at some point.

one time in late june 2009 i think the jays were 3.5 games out of a wildcard spot after beating philly at home...taking a piss amongst the masses every single grown man in the washroom singing (mockingly, to an extent) "i got a feeling" by the black eyed peas. i've even seen some guy take a couple hits from the peace pipe up near the 20th row of the 500s too, and didn't even get caught to boot.

These "unruly" folks would be considered model citizens at a European sporting event.

All I saw on TV yesterday was people drinking and everyone had a can of beer in their hand, baseball isn't the most exciting sport so you drink some more.

When they were booing Farrell when John Lackey got injured, you could tell these were not fans who understand the game. Media were giving too much credit to those fans by suggesting they were more concerned with booing Farrell. Truth is they couldn't even tell there was an injury and didn't care for the type of injury they just witnessed. They also thought Lackey threw at the hitter.

Rogers for years has been targeting people who want to get drunk and party at the game. And now those people have an actual team to cheer for.

This is no different than any other city, New York fans spat on Cliff Lee's wife, Texas Ranger fans were verbally abusing Hamilton's wife just this past week etc.

No different anywhere else... Guys smoking in the .500 level, fighting etc.

Mind you, our fanbase is quite uneducated about the game.

Let's just embrace our unruliness instead of being embarrassed by it. We can join the ranks of Philly and New York with some success. It's not like we're stabbing people like in Oakland.

Plus, it's not like Rogers hasn't encouraged this. They went through that centerfield area about 10 times showing young, goodlooking people cheering with beers in their hands...

Not surprised by those vids and I think it's been getting a lot worse the past few season. Among the 18-30 crowd going to Jays games (especially Friday night and weekend games) has become synonymous with getting drunk and acting like an idiot in public. The amount of empty cans you see in the stands at the end of a game is quite the sight especially when you consider how pricey the drinks are. I've also seen people taking swigs from liquor bottles they brought in from the outside and looking wasted by the 5th inning.

People in the 500s are usually the worst. Usually annoying college/university aged kids who aren't used to booze who end up annoying other drunks which usually leads to some kind of argument or fight. I wouldn't advise anyone with kids to take them up there for a game.

It's the "we gonna crush some beers and **** some bitches, bra!" crowd. Usually have the most Jays gear of any person you know but couldn't name more than 10 guys on the roster.

Wait. College/university aged kids who aren't used to booze?

I typically go to about 20-25 Jays games a year mostly on weekends with the odd Thursday. The majority of people there are having a great time. As always its the idiots that draw the biggest amount of attention because they cause the trouble.

Baseball has always been more about the concessions to the casual fan. The action is slower then other pro sports and in turn people are more willing to get out of their seat and buy booze.

It is what it is. Stop selling booze and I'm sure it will stop. But I know I wouldn't goto any games if that was the case.
That's what she said.

Most stadiums have alcohol free sections, not sure about Skydome... but I think they should look into having one.

At least keep the families separated from the morons. I don't think Jays fans are that bad though, after the first few games it always goes back to normal.

I'm not sure if stopping the sale of alcohol at the dome will fix this. I remember going to a washroom stall last season where there were multiple liquor bottles (200 mL bottles). It's really easy to sneak in these bottles and to most college kids, makes a lot more sense to pay 9 dollars to get drunk than 10 dollars for one watered down beer.

There are a couple alcohol free sections in the dome (at least 1 in the 200s, and I believe 1 in the 100s)

There's a section in the 500's too.

I believe that every stadium and arena in Ontario has to have at at least 1 alcohol free section on every level.

last year i went to about 5 games and they were all fine. for the most part the worst was a group of young girls who thought they were hotter than they actually were piss drunk on a sunday morning/lunch hour screaming to bautista they wanna do him.

other than that though everything has been manageable.

We also proudly lead the league in starter's ERA. Wait, higher is better, right?
