2013 Free Agents
Apparently it is not too early to discuss free agents on this board as we all seem consigned to either not making the playoffs, or an early exit a la last year, with the players currently on the roster.
Might as well have a thread to try to keep the conversation in one place.

Re: 2013 Free Agents
From this http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/22 ... enterpiece and Warriors salary commitments next year, it is clear that they won't be able to resign many of their players that expire or have out options.
Jack and Landry could really fit needs of the Jazz the next couple of years. I could see each of them taking a 2-3 year deal worth between $12M ( structured each year as $6.5M and $5.5M) to $20M ($7.8M, $6.6M and $5.6M), which GS could not match. Each could be a starter, but given their past and their salary could be used from the bench as needed too.

Re: 2013 Free Agents
I think before you get to free agency you really have to figure out how the draft will go down. Plus that and I think trades play a very BIG role in all this.
If it was me I'd give all 3 draft picks, plus Evans for Hedo and their 1st (if it means getting Marcus Smart).
So I'll start with throwing all the chips in for Smart. Then I'd get Maynor to go along with Smart at the PG spot. I'd probably get Stone or Bobby Brown on a min. contract to be the third guy.
Then I'd start Tomic at 4 million a year for 4 years. I'd trade a future 2nd for Kris Kardasian/Odom/Humphries, the rights to Bogdanovic, and Marshon Brooks. Yep the Nets give us those assets to swallow that contract.
soo
Kanter or Tomic (Favors)
Favors/ MWjr/ Hump
Hayward/ Bogdanovic/ Sonny Weems/ Hedo (hang on to for possible trade)
Brooks or Burks (Hayward) (Weems)
Smart/Maynor/Stone (Burks)
Murphy/McNeal or a different "walk-on"
Minutes (Assuming no injuries or issues)
5. Kanter (24) Tomic (24)
4. Favors (34) MW (8) Kanter (6)
3. Hayward (28) Bogdanovic (20)
2. Brooks (20) Burks (20) Weems (4) Hayward (4)
1. Smart (32) Maynor (18)

Re: 2013 Free Agents
With
Burks - Hayward - Kanter - Favors - Marvin - Evans as next years roster
Two 1st round picks in 14-22ish, and 1 2nd rounder in the early 40's overall.
Assuming these guys don't return: Millsap, Jefferson, Watson, Tinsley
And these guys stay: Foye, Carroll, McNeal, Murphy(murphy is still 50/50)
------------------------------------------------
That Leaves:
Starters:
Foye - Hayward - Kanter - Favors
Bench:
Burks - Carroll - Marvin - Evans
Backup: McNeal and Murphy
------------------------------------------
Missing:
Starters: PG
Bench: PG, PF, and C
Stocked:
3 SF (Carroll, Marvin and Evans)
3 SG (Foye, Hayward and Burks)
2 Bigs (Favors and Kanter)
------------------------------------------
So which PG from FA do we want to be our PG next year??
Mo Williams
Tony Allen
Nate Robinson
Chris Paul
Monta Ellis
JR Smith
Which guys do we want to get for Bigs on bench?(remember if we get 1 great big guy, he could start)
West
Bynumn
Howard
Kirlenko
Hickson

Re: 2013 Free Agents
I think we need:(give or take on starters/bench/position except*):
*FA - Foye - *Hayward - Kanter - *Favors
*UTA- Burks - Carroll - *GSW - FA
Backup: McNeal, Murphy, Evans, UTA2
------------------------------------------------------
We Need Minimum:
3 Draft Picks
2 Free Agents
----------------------------------------------------
I just can't see Foye and Carroll not making the cut next year!
I also can't see us keeping either Paul or Al. I think we are gonna need a 3rd man from FA for a 3 big man rotation. Like get some vet like West/Hickson to start, and split the time between the FA, Kanter and Favors, so even if Kanter or Favors is benched, all three could get 32 minutes each. But we still need 4th for backup, which could be had from Draft.
--------------------------------------------------------------
As far as PG, I think a PG opposite of Mo would help with the younglings learning the game. I don't want a Monta or a PG who holds the ball. I want one like a Rubio, who is gonna use the whole team. That way our younglings can develop beyond what Mo could do, and do it even though they don't have their PG of the year.

I vote Tony Allen should start at PG, then JR Smith can back him up. If both those guys go down Favors could fill in as an emergency PG. Sorry... I couldn't help myself.

I'm pretty sure the Jazz will sign Jose Calderon to a 3 year deal for 12-15 mil.

Nice...Calderon would be a nice fit till we could get a young riser.
I was thinking maybe Jennings or Jack could come in, but I am sure their price will be higher than we want.
Tony Allen is a good player, but I wish we could get Conley instead but he isn't going into FA. JR Smith is a great PG, but I just wonder if he could pull a Harden and come in and start.
Jennings is probably the best overall for us, in terms of assists/points, actual chance of getting him and his good team handling. Then again his price/performance might not be possible for us. Everyone knows Chris Paul is the best option available but were not likely to get him.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

Tony Allen is a defensive stopper specialist... and JR Smith is a shooting specialist and world class head case. In what world are they point guards? SMH

If you imagine his posts as a protracted montage from "Easy Rider," it all starts to make sense.

I can't believe no one understands anything I say...I would think basketball fans would be able to put 1 and 1 together.
Pulling off a Harden:
When a player goes from one team to another and becomes the centerpiece for the next team. A bench player so good on one team, that coming to another team they become a starter and run the team.

Re: 2013 Free Agents
Tony Allen would be a sweet pickup and so would JR Smith.
Our backcourt is dire need of a full blown make over, either one of those guys could come here and do great things. We already got our front court secure except for the bench.

Nothing in this world can change the fact that Tony Allen and JR Smith are not point guards.

No, trust me: they got it.

I'm not sure that Calderon would be willing to go from $10M/yr to less than $5M/yr.
Also, his age (will be 32 in Sept) concerns me.
What really concerns me is that he might be the Al Jefferson of point guards. Sure, he has a great PER, assist rate and shooting percentages. However, his D is simply not very good.
Also, the teams he plays for don't win. Raptors sucked it with him starting. The Pistons are actually worse since he joined them. This season pre-Calderon they had a record of 18-24. After the trade they are 7-21. Jose has been hurt the last few games, and the Pistons have gone 2-1 without him.

I agree.
If it was me I'd give all 3 draft picks, plus Evans for Hedo and their 1st (if it means getting Marcus Smart).
I would too, and I like this train of thought. However, Hedo's contract is only partially guaranteed up to $6M next year, which might change your plan. The Magic could actually use him around the trade deadline to obtain a good player who is a financial burden to his team, and the team receiving Hedo could release him at no or nearly no cost. Makes me wonder if it wouldn't have been a good move for the Jazz to give Milsap or Jefferson and a first round pick for Hedo and the Magic pick this year, although we have no idea if the Magic would have been interested.
Then I'd get Maynor to go along with Smart at the PG spot. I'd probably get Stone or Bobby Brown on a min. contract to be the third guy.
I don't get the love for Maynor. I see him as a 3rd stringer.
Then I'd start Tomic at 4 million a year for 4 years. I'd trade a future 2nd for Kris Kardasian/Odom/Humphries, the rights to Bogdanovic, and Marshon Brooks. Yep the Nets give us those assets to swallow that contract.
I'll have to trust you on the Euro guys, although they disappoint far too often.
soo

Hayward/ Bogdanovic/ Sonny Weems/ Hedo (hang on to for possible trade)
Brooks or Burks (Hayward) (Weems)
Smart/Maynor/Stone (Burks)
Murphy/McNeal or a different "walk-on"
Minutes (Assuming no injuries or issues)
5. Kanter (24) Tomic (24)
4. Favors (34) MW (8) Kanter (6)
3. Hayward (28) Bogdanovic (20)
2. Brooks (20) Burks (20) Weems (4) Hayward (4)
1. Smart (32) Maynor (18)
I guess MW means Marvin? I think that playing PF on the 2nd unit, he could actually do much better than he has starting alongside Al this year. Also, I would get a true third string PG instead of Weems, or commit to Burks as a PG full time. Your love of all things Euro (whether they are European or ex pats that didn't make the NBA the first time around) is a bit too much for me to wrap my head around.

When people say JR Smith as PG are they meaning to say Ish Smith or something? Pretty sure JR Smith of the Knicks would be the worst PG in NBA/WNBA history. (Not that Ish Smith would be much better)

I'm sorry he wouldn't be that much worse than Earl Watson. I'm a homer too. He's clearly passed his time. I like his energy and attitude, but I haven't seen a worse shooting liability ever. He doesn't handle the ball well either. Sorry about the rant, but it's hard to derail a thread that's already been derailed I suppose.

Has anyone even watched a Knicks game.
I define point guard as the guy who takes the ball across the half court line for the team. JR Smith is clearly in this category.
Why is everyone so anal about whether you call someone a Shooting Guard or Point Guard or True Point Guard....To me its just Backcourt, they all function as one.
Would we let Klay Thompson run the ball, yeah, we don't have to label him "Point Guard" to let him run the ball. I think we got pass the PG/SG thing a long time ago. I thought Burks was a good indicator that their is no longer a line anymore.
