If Bennett were 2 or 3 inches taller, there'd be no debate as to who's going #1 overall, IMO.
He's raw, gets lost defensively, and settles for jumpers maybe too often, but he's 20 years old. These are the problems you expect to see from a prospect his age. They're coachable problems and he'd have two very professional mentors in Nene and Okafor (at least) his first year.
I've been in the Bennett camp all year if he tests well (i.e. big enough for a PF or athletic enough for a SF), and I'm still firmly there.

Consig is absolutely right when he says we should be careful about passing final judgement on the attitude and work ethic of 19 and 20 year olds. Kids like Bennett are a work-in-progress.
Hands, Rasheed Wallace doesn't come close to meeting my definition of a knucklehead. From all accounts, Rasheed is a hard worker and locker room leader.

Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part III
Then in 2014, you are set up nicely to decide on what you can draft and or trade/FA regarding the path forward for Trevor A, Webster, Booker, Nene and Okafor, and whatever if anything is left from Kevin S and Ves
They were fools to not draft Nikola and one of T Harris or Faried. Take a bath and don't make the same mistake. I said at the time that draft wasn't as terrible as some thought. There was talent in there. Well I think this draft is even better then that one.
They could totally remake their depth in this draft while adding a center prospect and some depth that could start if needed.
The key will be their willingness and ability to purge older first round picks. A trade down could gets them the extra first they need this year even if they can't add it by dumping their old firsts. And if all they can get for those older first are 2nds and 2014 picks, they can still add upgraded talent with those picks. Just have to not get all caught up in the idea they you spend a past first on a player. At the end of the day its about adding talent. Learn from your mistakes and more forward.
Whats really the downside. So you are on record for your firsts not working out, but you are also on record for being smart enough to move on and replacing them with later first and 2nds that are great value gems. In the end, people will remember your winning moves if you are winning. What you did wrong will be the side note. .... well they made some mistake but they corrected them and they are winning moves.

At this point, my preference among the top picks is as follows:
1. Noel
2. Bennett
3. Burke
4. Porter
After that, I still haven't figured things out. My next tier includes Oladipo, McGary and Zeller, but I'm not sure the order. I would definitely explore trade down options if my first 4 were already gone. I figure McLemore and Smart go in the top 5 so that'll push down at least one of my guys as far as 6. Will they last until #8 when we pick? I don't know.

The Consiglieri
You seem to have neglected the points I made. I heard your points.
Also, here is the deal. We already have two of those types you are talking about. They are Wall and Beal. They were picked #1 and #3. We may have blown the 2011 draft but we did well in two others.
Where the team is now, they need to build it out. They need quality depth. So the balance of home run upside isn't as import as it would be if you had a team without any star quality talent.
They also have two 26 year old players that between them make for a great combo at SF. Right now, they don't need help at SF. Eventually they may need to maybe find 1 stud SF but that doesn't need to be decided right now. Because they may find a stud PF instead. But right now, they have Nene and I doubt they can or want to move him now so he is here at least another year. Hopefully it is a healthy year. Then maybe they can move him as his contract gets shorter with only two years left on it.
And unless they extend Trevor A or Okafor, next year is a year when lots of money comes off the books so that would be the time to make trades or add known quality stars at SF, PF or Center
Also, anyone they draft this year isn't going to start next season. So you are talking about bench scoring.
I say CJM gives you all the perimeter scoring that Bennett does, plus he has way better handles. He also can break you down and drive, and he can play some PG if needed. And he rebounds. And he fill a big need as back up SG and he is starter quality if anything happens to Beal who so far seems to get injured more then I like. And it may end up that he can play some PG right away in which case you just drafted a 25 min a game player. That a lot more then Burke as a pure PG getting Walls scraps. Its more flexibility.
CJM is a great combination of skills that are shared by Beal, Wall and Kyrie. Actually, he is a lot like Beal with worse D but better handles. I guess that makes him more like Kyrie.
And he has is a super mature person with a star personality.
So if you go Bennett, he has to play PF and for a PF, I want a good defender if that is my top pick. And I want to know he can pass it around so he isn't a black whole of chuck like Kevin S is.
I can fill out PF with the likes of Muscala, Erik Murphy, Ryan Kelly and Cory Jefferson.
Plus, if we are comparing the maturity of CJM vs Bennett, CJM wins hands down.
The Wall, Beal, CJM combination would be down right nasty. Add Pierre's speed and handles to that mix with Temples 3 position D, and your guards are set for many many years. And that isn't anything I would question. I know what all those player will do and they are exactly the personalities I want.
Now if they can trade down or just trade off the team their old firsts, I have them also adding a center, a PF, a stretch 4 and/or your upside PF in Cory Jefferson ( who plays defense )
CJM
Gorgui Dieng/Withey - picked up in the trade down of first pick
Mike Muscala -2nd
Pierre 2nd
Erik Murphy/Ryan Kelly/Corey Jefferson - picks from dumping any or all of Kevin S, Singleton, Booker, Ves
So why take a risk on Bennett who has maturity and motor questions, position questions, and doesn't play D at either ?
Sure he is an interesting player and I look forward to watching him in the NBA. He is the right personality away from being the next Sr Charles. But changing someones personality isn't so easy to do. If the tin man only had a heart. What stop Kevin S from dominating the boards? He has all the physical tools to do it.
I just think there are better options for the Wizards.

Maybe that was a bad example. Knuckleheads come in different flavors. Sheed was some what of a knucklehead early but he ended up just being more of a hot head on the court that would get T'd up to often which would hurt the team sometimes.
I wasn't a fan of us trading him away.
Now wasn't he also involved with the pot thing that Webber was involved in ?
Crazy to think we have Webber and Sheed and we kept Howard. Now Howard did go on to have a nice long career but he wasn't the talent Webber and Sheed were.
I guess if you are looking for a good example of keeping the nice kid over the upside talent, that would be a good example. Not that Webber wasn't nice. Its just the pot thing vs Howards straighter laced ways.
And we gave up so much to get Webby to let him go like that. Stupid move.

Bennett scares me for the reasons you mention. Why does Bennett get lost defensively? Could it be a lack of intelligence or does he just not care about defense. What kind of player with his girth and strength would settle for jumpers? Why isn't he taking it to the rack hard. Is he soft? I haven't watched him much so my only info is from posters here but perhaps someone that has seen him play a few times could comment. For instance, is he a good rebounder? Does he mix it up underneath to get position?

Why are people the way they are ? You are asking that kind of question. Why did MJ and now Kobe find defense to be as much a focus as they did/do, when they were such amazing offensive players ? Its just how they were built. Something that got instilled in them at a young age I'm sure. They wanted to be the best and that meant both sides of the game.
Bennett is just more focused on his offense. That is who he is. Its probably just more fun to him. He takes no pride or joy in shutting you down defensively. Often players like that don't give energy on D because they want to conserve it for their offense. Specially players who are a little chunky like Bennett. Some of it could be smarts. Being a great defender take lots of BBIQ. You have to react to a lot of factors and really grind it out.
Why didn't Gil take the effort to get better at D ? Not enough bow in his legs ?
Why does Wall take the challenge ? Why does Beal take the challenge as well ?

Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part III
- The Bennett PF/SF concerns isn't about which position he can play but rather if he's stuck in the middle and it turns out that he can't play either. Too slow to be a SF, too small to play PF. See: Beasley, Derrick Williams, Patrick Patterson, Antawn Jamison. I don't support that argument, but I can see where it's coming from.
- Bennett's offense shouldn't be in question. He's very skilled and equals Porter as far as offensive skill. He's a more versatile scorer than Shabazz. What is in question is his other skills. He doesn't have the handles that Porter and Shabazz have. He's also not the defender that Porter is. It's hard to say if he's even an NBA caliber defender at the SF position, especially since SF's are so much more skilled in the NBA than college.
- I understand Consiglieri's frustration at taking character guys ahead of talent guys. That GSW draft list is damning (and chock full of white guys). However, you do need stabilizing forces on a team or else the team will not exceed - or even equal - the sum of its parts. cite: 2002 Clippers.

You're confusing me, hands. On the previous page you say you're against drafting Burke because he's a starting PG and the Zards already have one of those, but now you're making the case for drafting McCollum, who at a slim 6-3 is probably more of a PG than a SG at the next level.
I wouldn't draft a PG or SG with the first round pick if there's a quality big like Bennett or Len still available. I'd look for a backup guard in the second round or, maybe better yet, try to sign a heady vet like Jarrett Jack.
I understand there are red flags regarding Bennett, especially his D and motor. But he's young and he could improve substaintially in both areas. If I'm drafting long-term potential and upside, I'm taking Bennett. But he'll likely be gone before the Zards draft so it's probably a non-issue.

Got it. It's more fun for Bennett to play offense while conserving his energy on the defensive end, especially since he takes no pride in that aspect of the game. Why are we even considering him then?

And thats kind of the point. You don't know if he wants to defend or if he can defend and that is not my top pick at SF or PF. I never want to draft a player like that with my top pick at that position. AJ should have never been a starter.
Noel, Porter, Len. Those are top picks if the Wizards want to draft a starter. But drafting Porter mean moving Trevor A and that means you need to do a trade. Moving Webster for Porter would be the wrong move but it is easier to do. Noel is injured. Len would be the easiest choice to fit right in.
Smart and Burke make no sense as our top pick. Starting PG is set on this team.
VO would be nice if he wasn't going to go so high and he didn't have the Crawford hunch.
If you go Len, then something like
Wall/Pierre
Beal/Temple
Trevor A/Webster
Nene/Mike Muscala
Okafor/Len
and one or more of Erik Murphy, Ryan Kelly, Cory Jefferson
Still missing a back up SG unless you go Jack and loss Webby and then you need another SF
vs the CJM trade down scenario
Wall/Pierre
Beal/CJM/Temple
Trevor A/Webster
Nene/Mike Muscala
Okafor/(Deng/Withey)
and one or more of Erik Murphy, Ryan Kelly, Cory Jefferson
Either would be solid build outs.

Re: Official 2013 Draft Thread - Part III
At the end of the day I'd be drafting potential special players with every pick. I just don't think it's good asset management to force picks. I think you can always deal quality for need down the road, but you can never have too much quality as a premise, so I'd still be drafting to land the best available talent. I think it's just a mistake to force a pick. I also think Bennett has a ton of potential flexibility as a player, he is a tweener, for sure, but I also think the NBA isn't nearly as fixated on fit for each position as it used to be, and I wouldn't be as concerned about forcing him to develop a more complete PF's game. I'd build on what he has, accentuate his assets, and work on the areas that could use some development w/o neglecting his skill set. He can do multiple things well at both the 4 and the 3, and I'd use him accordingly based on situations/line ups etc. I happen to think he's a far more valuable asset to invest in than McCollum etc (though I do happen to like him) In reference to your previous post, I felt I addressed it. I am not suggesting drafting the biggest D. Cousins type imaginable draft in and draft out. Back in '10 I wanted Wall or Favors, then after that it was a tough choice. All in all the preference is for the elite franchise talent w/the head screwed on straight, but I am not a believer in taking a player whose pretty clearly inferior because he's a better chemistry fit, or a less of a rock the boat type. My original post was directed at the argument that after dealing with the knuckleheads, the thought of drafting any guy w/questionable traits, was untenable. I disagreed fundamentally with that. I believe a front office should be prioritizing the best value w/their picks, draft in and draft out. Character and mental make up should be a compeonent because idiots w/horrid mental make up usually only last a contract, or implode before fulfilling their potential , but those types are far more rare than the super talented guy with difficult personalities or quirks, but workable talent. I'm thinking guys like CWebb, Charles Barkley, MJ, Kobe etc. All of these guys and many more have some difficult issues w/their personalities, or some iffy quality, but all werge worth the trouble. The guys where the mental make up issue renders them a potential liability would be a Cousins, a Coleman, hell a Barry Bonds for that matter. Guys whose mental approach is so poisonous that it infects a locker room, and kills chemistry. That's why ejecting the dumb and dumbers was worth it, even if McGee was a huge potential asset, and why not drafting CCJ's fav Cousins was also the right idea. Drummond, on the other hand, in my view, could be justified, because there wasn't nearly so much negative issues surrounding his mental make up, just some potential pre-draft smoke, that appears to have been b.s. based on word of mouth about his work habits in Detroit.hands11 wrote:The Consiglieri

I think it's shaping up that McLemore and Noel will be the top two picks regardless of who is picking. The next two to go are probably Smart and Bennett. They've got the look of potential franchise players--highly impactful true freshmen with good athletic tools and offensive skills.
Following them, it gets tricky. I think there will be at least one surprise somewhere in the top 6, seems to be one every year. Especially with the Cavs picking in that range.
Finally, I think the third tier will be some order of the safe and productive players with good athletic tools and ready skills: Burke, Zeller, Porter, and Oladipo. The guys who safely project to be good starters. I don't think we'll be able to predict the order those players are taken but I think it's a good bet all will be taken by 9 or 10. So if we're picking 8th, I hope either Zeller or Porter is still available.

Burke is a pure PG and he will expect to be a starting PG in the NBA 6-0 180 and he is likely going higher then CJM.
CJM coming off injury is going to be the steal of this draft. I expect him to go lower and I had us taking him in a trade down where we picked up an additional first. Its a value play vs just taking Len which is also a fine idea. We pick up another first and get Deng/Withey to back up center.
CJM is 6-3 192 Same height and weight as Kyrie. Same scoring mentality. Same height as Beal but Beal was 202
He is a SG with the handles of a PG but without the training in being a pure PG but he can still pass and he is willing to do so. He just doesn't see the entire court yet. Back up PG won't be his primary thing. Scoring SG off the bench will be. He will learn more PG stuff over the years. And he could start at SG right away if Beal ever got hurt.
He is like I said, Beal with better handles and worse D which is basically Kyrie. He would add great flexibility to the back court and a valuable asset both on the team and for any eventual trade down the road if needed.
Pierre, CJM and Trevor A would make sure the second unit was scoring. Great handles, speed, 3 pt shooting and driving skills in that group. Add in your stetch 4/PF - Erik Murphy, Ryan Kelly, or Corey Jefferson
Deng/Withey at center.
That second group would get it done.
In the J Jack scenario, you have to give up Webster.

It was a difficult read. I kept getting lost.
I little known secret. If you are on Windows, there is a virtual keyboard.
Start > Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access > On Screen Keyboard or in Win 7 click start and just type keyboard in the find.
Just copy it to your desk top.
You can type what you want then come back and put in the breaks.

It's a good year to draft sf's. Not as good next year but still a good year. Between Bennett, Porter, Dipo, and Shabazz, it goes pretty deep in terms of quality. I think Porter is going to grade out as the best out of the 4 but the consensus seems to have Bennett and Dipo both ranking better which is fine by me.
Bullets -> Wizards
