Could he? Maybe.

Should he? From partial information : No.

I can't believe some people would cheer if Kobe came back at the beginning of next season. It's the mentality that kept him on the floor for 48 minutes a game. Let's not learn from mistakes and do it all over again... There's nothing super human about coming back too soon, it's just impervious to your own good and inconsiderate to the whole team.

If the Lakers can't get in the playoffs without Kobe, then they won't be close to winning a championship anyway. Let them play and get in position and then Kobe can come back at all-star break when he is 100% (110%) ready. It's not a 100 meters race, it's marathon.

Even if he is 100% at the end of October, it's better for them to be cautious and keep him ready for the playoffs.

well he won't pull a Rose, so i give him a 1 in 3 chance of being back then. I'm fully confident he's back by Christmas.

I say Christmas or New Years is when he'll Be back.

Probably around All Star Break is when he'll be getting his lift and complete torque back.
He'll probably be fully healed long before then but it could be mental. ( Derrick Rose)

Read an article about how Dominique Wilkins had the same injury at age 32 an came back an still was an All Star his remaining career. Gotta believe with Kobe's insane work ethic and much improved modern technology that the chances are really good for him.

I'm sure Kobe would like to be back that early, hell he'd probably saw off his foot and get a robotic prosthetic if he could and suit up on Sunday.

Sure, Dr. Spaceman says, “but then you’ll have to register yourself as a motor vehicle.”

I don't know how the over/under works. I know he'll be back for sure.

It doesn't matter when Kobe comes back. All that matters is if.
Beyond that, it's all gravy.

It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when, and how early next season. Let's just say Kobe doesn't have the same mentality that everyone else has, you can't compare him to how fast other athletes have recovered. He will be treating that thing 24/7, doing whatever it takes to get back on that court.

My guess is he'll probably be doing a lot of upper body workouts and other core strengthening exercises while he can't put any weight on that foot.

The real issue is that his cardio will be crap by the time the season rolls around, and might be prone to injury in that regard. So 6 months is a bit crazy...but you never know. If it heals within 3 months and then he can train for 3 months I suppose...but you'd have to be a wolverine to do that right?

He will need time to get back into game shape before he hits the court. That will inevitably decide when he returns.

If Kobe missed the first 10 games of next year. I see nothing wrong with that. I rather have him 100 percent for 70 games than rush him and loose him later on.

define 100%, because you gotta take into account that 100% means having match fitness under your belt

cant be 100% without playing ball. cant play ball without being 100%

which is it?

This is a very serious injury... I don't see how he is ready game 1 without a huge risk of re-injury... I'd say at least 8 full months... so x-mas time or soon after that..

I think this is something that if you allow yourself more time to heal, the better off you will be. Especially at his age, it wouldn't be wise to rush anything.. this is his ankle we are talking about.

I would rather the training/coaching staff be incredibly conservative with this, and rule him out of bball activities until it's clear he can play at a reasonably high level... Because if Kobe can walk, he'll think he can play, and I'm worried he'll re-injure it.
Keep him out until the playoffs. Keep his ass on the zero gravity treadmill...

I think it's a mistake to even put 6-8mos out there.

The question shouldn't be how soon will he be back. It should be "how much explosion is he going to lose?". That is the real concern with this injury for a 35 year old.
