David Thorpe runs his annual column on which veterans the top rookies should study in order to improve their game. For MKG he suggests LeBron.

MKG has always been bigger, stronger and more athletic (not explosive athletic as much as coordinated athletic) than his opponents. But in the NBA, he no longer has those physical advantages as often, making his lack of a perimeter shot all the more painful.

James, of course, is and always has been the best athlete on the court for every game he has played in since he was 15 or so. His ballhandling and quickness, far exceeding MKG's, enabled him to dominate the world without a reliable jumper. But to win a ring and defend the title this year without always taking a pounding on drives to the rim, James has developed a beautiful jump shot. It seems almost unfair, but that is what every top player must have to reach their ceiling as a player.

There are many things MKG can do as a "LeBron-lite," but nothing would help him more than developing that long jump shot.

Give MKG 15 pounds of muscle and a jump shot and you have a very dangerous player.

This is from pg 13 where we were guessing MKG's averages for this season. Looks like SWedd was closest, followed by Vanderbilt Grad and King Cat. :D

I thought it was pretty cool that MKG ended the season as the third best shotblocking SF in the NBA - behind Durant and Batum, but ahead of LeBron. Even more impressive - those guys averaged roughly 38 MPG while MKG played only 26 MPG.

He also finished 9th among SFs in rebounding, which again is impressive considering he was playing nearly 10 minutes less per game than about everyone else. and I know some people don't care about this other stat, but on a per minute basis, he was actually the best shot blocking SF and the second best rebounding SF in the game. Not too bad for a 19 year old rookie.

It doesn't matter. Mike doesn't average 20 points per game, so he is a bust until then. Scoring is all some people understand.

Grantland's Kirk Goldsberry made one of his shot charts for MKG since Simmons mentioned him in his annual NBA trade value rankings..

He also kept mentioning the thing that worries me the most about our future with MKG and Hendo, I'm sure you've heard me say this a million times but the future of the league for the swingman position is held by guys who can hit threes and defend...

well, its true. if MKG cant get that jumper to around league average he will always be a problem for our half-court offense. he has a lot of work to do on that jumper in the summer and following year.

I don't buy into the idea that swingmen have to be 3 point shooters. LeBron and Wade weren't really threats. But more importantly, the really good players set the tone. Roleplayers fit in around them. If you think MKG is really good, you get roleplayers to do what he doesn't do well. It's simple. When you have a defensive liability like Carmelo Anthony or Dirk Nowitzki, you get a Tyson Chandler. When you have an offensive liability like MKG, you get Kyle Korver or something similar.

There is a reason Mimai's complementary players are nearly all great 3 point shooters. They have to be in order for the big 3 to have room to operate. Also LeBron was just outside the top 50 NBA players in made 3's this year. Misleading to say that he's not really a threat there.

Yes, MKG is going to need to work hard on his shot. It's OK if his game isn't just about shooting, but his game has to include an outside shot that folks respect in order for his inside game to keep working. Or the Bobcats need to get more outside threats to play with him.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

another reason i am reluctant to sign hendo long-term (unless its only to retain an asset with the intention of moving one of hendo/mkg later.

i dont think the two of them compliment each other. i think MKG has to be paired with a sg who is a legit 3pt threat, likewise for hendo.

Klay Thompson would be awesome for us between Kemba and Hendo.

Can shoot lights out from 3. Can create his own shot a little. Good passer of the ball. High BBIQ type player.

If Barnes kicks on for them and shoots even just ok from range (considering they have Curry) Hendo would be a good fit there too.

A straight swap of both players would help both teams balance wise IMO.

Kemba - Thompson - MKG - Biz - Noel

Curry - Hendo - Barnes - Lee - Bogut

I love your optimism Slam but that's never going to happen. They weren't willing to move Klay for James Harden. They're definitely not going to do it for Gerald Henderson.

They didn't want to move Thompson for Harden due to the luxury tax hell they would be in.

So you think the Klay for S&T Hendo swap is realistic?

I don't. We'd need to throw something in from our end or take one of their crap contracts, probably both. Golden State isn't going to want to break up their god level shooting backcourt.

Good shooting - but poor defence.

But if we did have to add incentive, it is a pity Gana expires. I would add in Gana for Biedrins.

How about we give them Sessions as well?

Hendo and Sessions
for
Thompson and Biedrins.
