Mayo declined his option

This is good. Now if he wants a long term contract I'd give him $6-7 per year max. More than that I'd let him walk.

6-7 mil$?

He probably opted out because he knows once he gets his contract he's going to suck even harder. If in his CONTRACT year he was this bad... then how is he going to be after he signs a long-term contract.

I can't remember a slower SG in recent memory with as least of an initiative as OJ Mayo... I can't stand that guy. I tried to be open minded at first but... he really sucks. And no, don't bring me the "numbers". Unless he becomes an off-ball spot-up shooter and the Mavs get a very good passing PG then he's useless.

How much better of a SG can you get with $6 mil? Please enlighten me. With all his deficiencies he's still 25 years old. What kind of shooting guard is better than OJ Mayo, with his age or younger, that you can get for $6mil or less?

I say good riddance. He will not find any takers, and mavs will get him for 3/10 or 3/12. Carlisle trashed him, deservedly, and he cost himself money with the poor effort followed by the rant. I say he is just a guy, not a difference maker

Another one year contract for more money or else if he wants a long term deal then he isn't worth more than 4 mil or so. Bye OJ good riddance

We don't have Bird rights, so I don't think he can be S&T'd. I could be wrong, but I don't think you can S&T someone one the 120% rule. Even at that, he may get more than 120% ($4.8 mil). If I am correct on that, I think Mayo is pretty much a former Maverick with no reason to really discuss him.

Won't be missed. I'd rather have Delonte West back.

No surprise here.

The last few months have made me definitely not want Mayo back, he was a beast without Dirk, but hes obviously not playing well with him.

Lets add SG to the list of desperate needs, Shabazz could fall to us in the draft but Im not too sold on him...

Look, I was disappointed by Mayo's second half of the season performance too but you guys make it seem like he was trash.

He's a league average SG. His athleticism and handles are pretty underwhelming but he's a good shooter. I'd say he is a mediocre defender - Terry was worse defensively but at least Terry had offensive initiative. Carlisle did mention throughout the season that he was trying to improve Mayo's overall game (or something like that). Mayo probably got lost in his undefined role.

Unless he signs a cheap contract I don't want to see Mayo back on the team.
He had a incredibly disappointing end of the season - I was looking forward to him playing a two man game with Dirk but that ended up being VC instead.

Oh, and there are teams out there who will sign Mayo despite his flameout.
Here are Mayo's April splits to highlight his late season burnout.
9 Games / MPG: 35 / FG%: .385 / 3PT% .387 / FT%: .833 / PPG: 8.6 / RPG: 3.1 / APG: 4.8

I wouldn't be angry if we brought Mayo back, but in a limited role. He's a 3rd option (probably 4th option on a true contender), and if we can bring him back at 6-million for 3-4 years, it's a solid deal for your 4th best player. He's still young and he can shoot the ball. If we had a playmaker on the team that could create for someone like Mayo, it would highlight his strengths.

Unfortunately, I don't see Mayo passing up on 8-9 million a year from a team and he'll get that offer somewhere. I think he's a former Maverick as well.

Mixed feelings on this one.

RC has spent time with him and he still has room to develop. And I'm not crazy about starting a roster from scratch for the 3rd time in a row.

However he doesn't seem to mesh well with Dirk so it probably doesn't make sense to bring him back.

It wouldn't surprise me if we have a Monte Ellis/Tony Allen type of backcourt next season since playmaking PGs who can score are virtually non-existent. Then maybe sign Dalembert.

Ellis/Rookie/James?
Allen/Carter/Cunningham
Marion/Crowder
Dirk/Wright
Dalembert/James

Sums it up. I think most posters here feel the same way.

The second part of your statement is why the posts in this thread reflect your first statement. It is not that we would not welcome him back (people here still complain that we did not bring Barea, Stevenson, Butler, Nash, etc. back), but it is about the money. Signing Mayo indicates that we failed to get a game changing free agent and signing our next 4 years into mediocracy.

personally i was rooting for him in the beginning, but when dirk came back i saw a drop in effort and everything, i think were better off without him.

I have long viewed Dally as close to Chandler as usually available. He seems to be frustrating, but then again we are often used to frustrating Cs who give Mavs a good game 1 out of every 5.

Story in DMN today heavily promotes Ellis as a great option here. Scoring PG, not really a 3 threat, and poor defender. Is he a PG? It seems in GS he was a 2 to Curry, and in Mil he is a 2 to Jennings. Is PG his main position?

i wish him well....

I thought he would break out this year, but apparently that was short lived.

His defense is the main issue I have with him as a player--he is not aggressive enough on that end.

I can't remember seeing a SG with such poor ball handling skills--it not just the TOs, but the TYPE of TOs I saw him commit. Basic dribbling situations which most guards in the NBA can handle easily, he struggles with.

Carlisle was extremely patient with him--perhaps too patient. I probably would have benched him weeks ago.

I believe there were AT LEAST 3 games where I believe if Carlisle simply pulled OJ out in the closing minutes, we would have won. This team probably could have been sitting on 43 or 44 wins.

I really don't know what else there is to say.

His confidence comes and goes. He needs more emotion on the court.

Another team might sign him to a big contract and if so, I wish him the best.

But he will be limited unless he can improve his defense and ball handling.

And yes, we need to address the center situation immediately.

If Dalembert is available, we need to make the move. Even though he is limited, he can solve many of our problems.

We shouldn't hold out for big names anymore.

I really like Brandon Wright....hell, if he could work out like a beast this offseason and beef up, he might be our answer.

He has the tools, but he is too small. I would really like to see him at 240.

I'm not a huge Ellis fan but the Mavs will be desperate for a 2nd scoring option and he might be the best available in FA. Coop seems to think he is a strong possibility as well. I hate the thought of overpaying though.

I have always had the same thoughts on Dally...a poor man's Chandler. Dirk needs an athletic shotblocking/rebounding center with size to do the dirty work for him and Dally is someone we should be able to get pretty cheap. Still don't understand why we didn't do a virtual swap of Kaman for him at the TDL.

I kind of like Wright the way he is because he works out in many situations. I'd like to see him extend his shooting range a little though.
We just need a legit sized center (7ft 240+) who can block shots and rebound for the times Wright doesn't matchup. Dally would be the perfect fit imo because he wouldn't take up much cap space and a rotation of Dirk/Wright/Dally with James as a 3rd option would be a decent frontcourt sitation. Then we can user our cap space to address the backcourt.
