Gotta spend at least $26.5M this summer
How do the Jazz meet the minimum salary without messing up our shot at signing Favors and Hayward next summer, and Kanter and Burks the year after that?
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

Re: Gotta spend at least $26.5M this summer
For some reason NBA teams don't seem to have a hard time spending $26.5M in a hurry. I think their focus is to continue the rebuilding and not worrying about only signing guys that won't threaten the young player's minutes.

First things first, the FO needs to admit to the rebuild and not live in denial.

Next summer Favors and Hayward will be free agents. If we spend 26.5M on players this summer that aren't just 1 year deals, we could be in real trouble.

I would sign Jarrett Jack, Mozgov, resign Foye, resign DeMarre, we have our draft picks, and go from their.
Ingles is cooked.

For how long? That's the real key. We need cap space next summer, or else we'll pay the newly increased luxury tax (and I don't see that happening).

Re: Gotta spend at least $26.5M this summer
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we need to add that much salary. However far below the minimum threshold we end up, that amount gets distributed among the players we do have.
But again, someone jump in if that recollection is off.

You obviously didn't listen to Dennis Lindsey's locker clean out interview today.

Correct--I doubt it comes to that though.

If a team doesn't meet its minimum payroll it is surcharged at the end of the season for the shortfall. That money is distributed among the players on that team.

Re: Gotta spend at least $26.5M this summer
I'd start by offering Chris Paul about $30 million in cold, hard cash just for next season. Front load his max contract offer with that much up front cash, give him a player option for every year after that, and see if some magic happens.

And with a bonus like that you'd hope they'd forgive the FO for a strategic tank.

The money needs to be spent next year, not over the summer. Somme could be saved for another team's salary dump at next trade deadline.

Too bad the CBA wouldn't allow that.

Re: Gotta spend at least $26.5M this summer
It's actually only $28 million. The other $2 million is Kevin McHale's consulting fee.

Re: Gotta spend at least $26.5M this summer
Bring back one of Millsap/Big Al (the cheaper one) as a 6th man off the bench behind Favors/Kanter.
Let Favors and Kanter play 34 minutes each (we all know how much D-Fav gets into foul trouble so you need a very good third big man off the bench to play minutes) and give the other 28 minutes to Millsap or Big Al.
Resign Carroll and bring in a point guard. I like the Jarrett Jack example.
Draft CJ McCollum to backup both PG and SG as a 6th man. Let him learn the PG position so he can start at PG next season.
Draft Kabongo at 21 as the 3rd PG off the bench and slowly develop him into a solid backup going into 2014-15.
Depth chart:
Jack(FA)/Kabongo (21st pick)
Burks/McCollum(14th pick)/Mason jr (FA)
Hayward/Carroll/Williams
Favors/Evans/Mbakwe (2nd round pick)
Kanter/Jefferson

You are right.

Plus, having that amount of cap space would allow us to absorb one or a few expiring contracts. I bet there will be some teams willing to give up picks and assets in order to get below the luxury tax.

Re: Gotta spend at least $26.5M this summer
We had a big thread about what we would do this off season. It is probably on page 2 or 3, still.
I would sign a some 1 year deals and bring cheap guys back and leave roughly $13M open for a midseason salary dump, looking at you Mr Humphries and take back a 1st rounder.

The Wizards are cheap... just plan on taking okafor right now
no worries... be happy
The Warriors will be happy to give up RJ or Biedrins too.

I don't think you understand. This is not a general offseason thread. This is about a specific offseason problem: the minimum salary.
I think the minimum salary could really mess up the second contracts for Favors and Hayward, and maybe even affect Kanter and Burks.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.

This is the thread I think he was talking about; while the title is about getting a top pick in the draft, many of the posts give detailed accounts of how the Jazz might reach the minimum salary.
