What if our GM gets fired? Replacement?
Alright so let's say Gores comes on television this week and announces Dumars getting fired. Who do you think our replacement should be/shouldn't be?

Hire someone to do the business side and let the realgm board make the basketball decisions.

I think this question is a rather silly one given how are fans supposed to know the up and coming executives - this is a go-to trap question for Dumars supporters more often than not. And when no names can be offered then it's "Well, I guess we better keep Dumars".
But here's a name for you - Ryan McDonough.

Re: What if our GM gets fired? Replacement?
I'd take Magic or Laimbeer over Joe, just to name a few. I refuse to believe Dumars is the only person in the world who is capable of succeeding at this job. Does he deserve another chance because of his championship? yeah, I guess, but that doesn't mean he should automatically get the job, because what if there are other GMs out there who could do even better? Why are we limited to just Joe as our only option? If there's a better player out there at a position, then you upgrade and tell the current player he's being replaced. GM should be no different.
I do think he's done a good job the past few years setting us up to be successful again, but unfortunately if no good coach's will come here because of him, then its all for nothing. I don't blame him for the "Karen Years" because I understand the situation was out of his control, but this thing with the coach's possibly alienating us because of him is a problem. If you have a player on your team that is a malcontent and preventing good coach's from wanting to coach your team, no matter how much money he's making you'd buy him out in order to move on and be able to hire a good coach. Why should the GM be any different? The ironic thing is Gores just did the same thing to Rip, who was deemed a potential problem for future coach's and was bought out to go away. Yet not Joe.
Worst of all its just setting a bad example of accountability, and it starts at the top. When players see GM get chance after chance after chance with no accountability, its a pretty good bet that is where they are learning it from when they take weeks off during the season where they don't give any effort. Because they see their leader get away with it year after year with no consequences.

I think the only insight that any of us can offer will be "just hire someone from the Spurs front office".

Re: What if our GM gets fired? Replacement?
I'll second Kilo's opinion on Ryan McDonough... but I'd "promote" Joe Dumars!
Joe can be the "President of Basketball Operations"... still on the payroll, still work in the office, still go to meetings... but McDonough runs the show!
McDonough would be the GM and have final say on everything and Joe can be there to convince the players that all these stat geeks are not nerds who got lucky and work for an NBA team!
Like it or not some people don't think much of the advanced stat crew and until some team known for their advanced stat stuff wins the title some people will always doubt how much weight you should put into that stuff
Joe would be kept around to get those people on board... everyone loves Joe, so use it to your advantage

Re: What if our GM gets fired? Replacement?
JD is still a top 5 GM... when you do the research you'll soon find how many mistakes other GM's have made...
The youngsters don't understand that every team goes through a rebuild (minus the Spurs)... not saying that the rope is endless... but Joe deserves this summer to get it right... after this it's fair game.

Mercury - are you implying I'm a youngster? If so, thanks
And considering your signature is "Think big or move outta the way" I thought you'd be fine with dumping Joe and moving on from the mess of the last 5 years...
Think big = Phil Jackson as GM, Sloan as Head Coach, Brian Shaw as the apprentice waiting to take over in 2 years...
Drummond, Monroe and $30 mil in cap space = BOOM!

Seriously, other than Ryan McDonough I had no real "up and comers" in mind...
so I went to the obvious place:
http://www.sloansportsconference.com/?page_id=2
and I discovered that Mike Zarren and Sam Hinkie were candidates for the 76ers GM position in 2012
Mike Zarren = Assistant GM - Boston Celtics - lifelong Celtic fan but money talks

I'd love to over hear those calls about trades from people on here. "What? You won't give me Russell Westbrook and Durant for Stuckey and Villanueva?!? It works on the trade machine!"

serious answer, there isn't anybody that instantly strikes me as "that's our guy!". Think Kevin Pritchard could be swayed to leave Indiana?

So it doesn't look like Dumars will be going anywhere. He'll be the one searching for coaches this summer.

Re: What if our GM gets fired? Replacement?
I think any discussion with firing JD should start with who are the better options?
If you select a GM from here http://hoopshype.com/general_manager.htm you'll see that most make real bad decisions... it's like a batter getting a hit 30% of the time.

Re: What if our GM gets fired? Replacement?
Phil Jackson will not be interested in Detroit... when Joe hired LB Phil said "why would Larry want to go to Detroit?"
I'm expecting some type of regression with a new coaching system (to start the year).

Anybody? Jodi? I mean Jodi could put together a better roster than what Joe D has done.

Didn't read the thread until now. I would absolutely go this route rather than trying highly expensive retreads for the GM spot.

I'll dive in more deeply to each guy later but on the surface I absolutely love the idea. It sends us in a new and different direction...which is exactly what this team needs. Get a guy who knows the numbers and wants to exploit market inefficiencies

Re: What if our GM gets fired? Replacement?
Another candidate that could possibly replace Joe...
and yes I know all signs point to Joe staying but you never know
Troy Weaver | Vice President / Assistant General Manager
Troy Weaver begins his fifth season with Oklahoma City and his third as the team’s VP/Assistant General Manager. Weaver joined the Thunder in May of 2008 and assists General Manager Sam Presti with roster development and day-to-day basketball operations. In addition, he coordinates the team’s player personnel matters including NBA Draft preparation, player free agency and summer league roster.
Weaver held the position of director of player personnel for the Utah Jazz in 2007-08. He spent three seasons (2004-07) as head scout for the Jazz before his promotion to Director of Player Personnel.
Prior to joining the Jazz, Weaver was an assistant coach at Syracuse University for four seasons (2000-04). The Orangemen won the 2003 NCAA National Championship led by Weaver recruit Carmelo Anthony. In addition to his experience at Syracuse, Weaver spent time as an assistant coach at New Mexico (1999-2000) and Pittsburgh (1996-99).
Prior to his collegiate coaching days, Weaver amassed an 85-17 record as an AAU coach in Washington, D.C. He guided the DC Assault to the 1996 AAU Tournament of Champions.
Weaver graduated with an associate’s degree from Prince George’s Community College (MD) in 1991, where he also played one season of basketball.
