Well, the Grizzlies have the best defense in the league and without Gasol, their defense is terrible inside and that is with Allen on the floor.

Well deserved. Gasol is their MVP.

Not sure how I feel about this... Gasol was no slouch on defense, don't get me wrong but DPOY? Ehh...

The Grizzlies do NOT have the best defense in the league. They have the #2 defense in the league. They are, of course, a great defensive team.

Ron Artest was the last perimeter player to win the award. It's sad that Tim Duncan will retire never winning the award. Well deserved to Marc Gasol, and who said Europeans can't play defense?

Bruce Bowen was why although I cant think of any year he should have won it except maybe 2007.

Yup looks about right, is this from the IPV defensive numbers (which i think is prior informed right?)or the RAPM? Duncan certainly deseves a DPOY for his career and it's a damn shame he's never won, but he just doesn't have the minutes played this year. Gasol certainly deseves it he's been great this year.

marc is a great defender but where did this DPOY come from, like seriously hes the best defender in all of nba this year? grizz has zbo whos prob top 5 rebounder in league, gay n prince are good defenders at the 3, allen probably best perimeter defender in league along with iggy, and conley is top 5 defensive pg easily...i guess he got it cus of the overall team, but dont kid urselves there are many better defenders in basketball

Garnett and Duncan are insane. They're both top 10 despite playing only 75% of the minutes of the other 8. Garnett manages to even stay above the mean contribution in both cases.

Yup. Impressive that Paul George is first in both. Will be interesting to see if he can keep up his defensive intensity and ability as he grows as a player overall and offensively.

Last night showed a glimpse of that too, taken from Spurstalk:

DPOY Gasol: 2rebs/0stls/0blks in 41 minutes. His team allowed 112 points(55% FG).
Lost the rebounding battle: 23-47

37 yr old Duncan: 10 rebs/3stls/0blks in 36 minutes. His team allowed 79 points(41% FG)
Lost the rebounding battle: 43-44

Honestly, your stat on Duncan isn't exactly impressive. The Lakers scoring so few points can be attributed to not having Kobe and the resulting lack of perimeter scoring. Dwight and Pau both had good games last night as well and dominated the boards.

Not only that, but Memphis was on the road against a very potent Clipper team , where as the Spurs were at home.

Not only that, but a large majority of the Clippers points came from the perimeter.

I gotta say: I'm shocked to see a white player without outstanding athletism win this award. Not that I wasn't expecting it given the press this year, I just never would have expected this to happen before this year.

Pretty amazing.

To my mind, Duncan & Garnett have been the best per minute defenders in the league for a very long time and continue to be so...but minutes gotta count.
