Should Atlanta make another blockbuster move on draft day?

Post#1 » by tcorbin » Tue Apr 23, 2013 11:44 am

Should the Falcons make another blockbuster move on draft day? Like they did in the Julio Jones trade a few years ago.

Lets say the Falcons didn't make the trade and had a crystal ball and ended up picking the best talent at ever draft spot they trading away in 2011 and 2012, they would have ended up with:

Jonathan Baldwin - 580 yards / 2 TDs
Randall Cobb - 587 yards / 2 TDs
Karl Klug - 22 tkl / 10.5 sacks
Whitney Mercilus - 15 tkl / 6 sacks
Miles Burris - 62 tkl

Does that combined production and talent better or equal to what Julio Jones has amassed:

Julio Jones: 2157 yards / 18 TDs

The Falcons could probably trade away one or two draft picks to move up to the middle of the draft to get a guy like Jarvis Jones or Bjoern Werner or should the Falcons trade 4 or 5 picks to get into the top 5 picks in the draft and grab a guy like Ezekiel Ansah, Dee Milliner, or Dion Jordan?

Baldwin and Cobb are trash, but the 16.5 sacks would have helped Atlanta alot. its hard to say if the Falcons would have actually picked Klug and Mercilus if they kept the picks, but all in all, it looks like at worst case scenario the Falcons broke even on the trade.

Mercilus might end up becoming a pro bowler one day, "maybe", Klug is a solid NFL starter, while the other guys will be fighting to make an NFL roster for the rest of their careers.

Milliner is solid, but he won't become the next Champ Baily, and i'm not sold on the Ezekiel hype, but if the Falcon's scouts really think that he is going to become a +15 sack guy, then why not, go ahead and make the trade.

The falcons are a peculiar bunch. I mean, they could take the strides they made this past year, and take it to another level next year. They have the guns, the firepower offensively, just add a piece here or there on defense. And done, they should be SOLID.

But something seems to be missing. And with Frisco and seattle, GBay even the redskins and the newly revamped buccaneers seem to be getting more love than the falcons.

I think the missing piece is not on the field. But it is in their coach. They have a first year coach running their offense, and he was a guy who did some time out on the west coast that many are familiar with. I think he will be the key to finally taking the falcons to the next step. If they don't, they are about to run over by the likes of seattle, frisco, tampa bay etc... who have all just seriously reloaded.

They really like Dee Milliner and if he's there at #8 you could see them offer enough to get Buffalo to listen.

If he only had 587 yards / 2 TDs that would be true but he has 1329 yards receiving/ 9 TDs, 137 yards rushing and 3 return TDs

This year's draft is lacking at the top, not a lot of legit top end talent. I don't think it'd be worth it this year.

If we get Lattimore and he comes back healthy (Big IF I know) then we'll have the steal of the draft.

I do agree that Cobb isn't trash he's a great Receiver but he's a product of the Green Bay system, he has the best QB in the NFL throwing to him and has a bunch of other good Receivers in GB that somewhat distract other Defenses from him. (Jordy, James Jones, Finley). Cobb is a great player but he's nowhere near Julio's level. Julio will be a top 3 WR in a year or two and could even become the best at his position (it'll be a race between him and AJ Green for that spot in a few years when Calvin gets a little bit older). I'm not even saying that as a Falcons homer, Julio Jones is the real deal and that trade up was Brilliant by Dimitroff
