I don't think its post defenders so much as PAINT defenders. The idea that a shotblocking big is helping to defend every player on the court at once while a perimeter defender is just locking up one guy. Of course if that is the idea then Hibbert is the better choice.

Marc Gasol???

I saw Marc play, I saw Larry Sanders play. Apparently the folks voting for this didn't.

He should have won a bunch, 2000-2001-2005-2006-2007 probably, specially the latter chosing Camby over him was a joke, but not this season.

Wow Lebron finished way too high in the voting. He played better defense last year. Surprised Hibbert didn't get many votes. Also Tony Allen should have finished higher.

Ibaka shouldn't even be in contention but people think blocked shots=great D. Stupid.

Proud of Sanders for getting so many 2nd and 3rd placed votes, not bad for a player who was buried on the bench for 2 years. Can't really argue with the guys ahead of him either.

Also congrats to Marc. Who knew this award could go to the unflashy.

Some people really overanalyze things.

Ibaka is such a flashy defender that he has become underrated because of it. Everyone thinks that if one guy is flashy, it probably isn't very effective and that is all they do.

It is why Wade has been underrated defensively for most of his career. He has always made flashy plays defensively such as getting steals, blocking shots, etc. People don't realize that he is just simply a great defender though and he does more than that.

Perhaps because Larry Sanders played only 1900 minutes this season? Even 87 year old Tim Duncan would call that part-time work.

Skiles and Boylan had a real tight leash on Sanders for most of the season. Even when he wasn't in foul trouble he was only getting 25 minutes a night.

People have no difficulty pointing out the things Ibaka does wrong.

Also with Wade while I agree his peak defensive impact is quite impressive, when he's not absolutely flying around dude's just a guard. Not saying he's a bad defensive guard, but whining because you didn't get All-D as a guard is a bit like whining about not getting a Silver Slugger as a pitcher - you might have techinically desserved it over the guy who got it, but you don't really deserved to be singled out as one of the 5 players in the league that symbolize what defense means.

Marc Gasol (career): 103 DefRtg, .160 ws/48, 14.1 reb%, 3.8 blk%, 1.4 stl%
Serge Ibaka(career): 101 DefRtg, .165 ws/48, 15.7 reb%, 7.4 blk%, 0.8 stl%

Ibaka is being underrated defensively because all people think he can do is block shots because he's led the NBA in blocks three of his four years.

Opponents are shooting 39% against him this year including 28% when isolated and 41% when posted up. People need to stop acting like he's a terrible 1 on 1 post defender. His actual biggest weakness is his refusal to leave the paint when he's guarding stretch 4's.

EDIT: just to make sure, Ibaka does not deserve to win DPOY this year. But for the people to say that it's laughable to be in the top 5, that's ludicrous. He's the most important defensive player on the 4th best defensive team this year.

Throw out the stats, and watch the games. Marc was a game-changing force on the defensive end in a way that no other player was this year. He forces more airballs and no-rimmers than anyone, and he does it without fouling.

The fact that the first-place votes tally wasn't even close should tell you something.

What does WS/48 and REB% have to do with this?

Also confusing putting career stats.

Marc Gasol ( This season ) : 98 Drtg , 5.4 Dws, 18.9 Drb% , 1.6 Stl%, 4.1 Blk%, 3.9 Drapm, 2.9 Dipv.

Serge Ibaka ( This season ): 101 Drtg, 4.1 Dws, 17 Drb%, 0.6 Stl%, 7.4 Blk%, 1.4 Drapm, 0.9 Dipv.

Ibaka would of been a worthy winner too but where do OKC rank defensively?
