But even then they could have drafted Ogletree and traded up or into another 2nd rounder or higher one in that case.
Oh Phil, Phil, Phil....
Maybe yes, maybe no. Do you think you know more about evaluating draft prospects than Emery? I know for sure that I don't. Do you think media guys like Kiper and Mayock know more? I don't. In fact, I believe that some of the media guys get played mercilessly by GMs before and during the draft. They then base their predictions on misinformation they're given by the professionals who are actually responsible for making draft decisions. Happens every year.
Still, as fans, we buy into what the media guys are sellin' (and yes, I realize that some of the media guys are former players and NFL execs...but none are currently getting paid to make draft decisions). Then, when our team's GM makes a pick that doesn't match up with what the media guys predicted, the media guys start screaming how the pick sucked or that he "reached." Fans then adopt the media views (for those fans who base their opinions on endless hours of video study, I apologize).
Pro Football Weekly's Publisher Hub Arkush provides an example of what I'm talking about. This morning, he bemoaned the fact that the Bears didn't select Florida DT Shariff Floyd at #20. Arkush stated that "everyone around the NFL agreed that Floyd was a top-10 talent." Since Floyd lasted until the Vikings took him at #23, clearly NFL GMs are not included in Arkush's "everyone around the NFL" group. I assume that Arkush was referring to his colleagues who are either amateur talent evaluators or former pros who currently don't have a paying gig with a NFL team.
According to Emery, he and his staff believed that Long was the best offensive lineman at the Senior Bowl. Several of the OLs who were picked before Long played in the Senior Bowl including the first and 4th overall picks. If Emery even kind of believes what he said about Long, I can understand why he took him at #20.
Here's the thing. Mel Kiper has been dead wrong in his first round assessments dozens of times over the years, but no matter how often he's wrong, he keeps his job. If Emery is consistently wrong, he gets fired. As a fan, you can certainly fire on Emery if you like...it doesn't cost you anything and you'll have lots of company today. As for me, I just hope Emery turns out to be right and that Arkush is once again proven to be the pompous douche I know and detest.
