I would like to point out to you, that despite TT having used 38 late round picks, you included Taucher and Driver as the examples of good late round picks. Neither of whom were drafted by TT (Wolf, who was legitimately a great late drafter).
Wolf also drafted Adam Timmerman and Keith McKenzie in the 7th round. Chmura, Doug Evans, and Marco Rivera in the 6th. Dorsey Levens and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila in the 5th.
That said, Wolf wasn't as consistent with his early picks as Ted has been.
Yup.
Wolf drafted Pro-Bowl players in 6 of 9 years in the 5th round or later. Add to them, Bill Schroeder, Taucher, and Doug Evans. He was amazing late in drafts. Not so much earlier though.
Wolf was mainly known for building those teams which went to back to back Super Bowls, but when you think about that time in the NFL, the NFC was as good as any conference in league history IMO. You had those dominant Dallas teams and San Fran was still really good, along with the Packers who had get through those two teams. They were good enough to make another Super Bowl in a different era and mix in the two devastating playoff losses to San Fran and Philly. The last second Owens catch and 4th and 26 vs the Eagles easily could have cost two more Super Bowl berths.
Speaking of that Philly loss, one of the more understated things of Wolf's tenure i think was that great O-Line he put together that Sherman's staff coached up well. That group of Clifton, Wahle, Flanagan, Rivera, and Tauscher was a badasss run blocking machine, especially when they brought in Barry for the U-71 package.
I love watching Aaron Rodgers play and throw bullets all over the place, but for me, there is something extra-cool about being a fan of a physical offense that can just run the ball down the throats of a defense, even when defenses are playing for the run as that line could along with Ahman Green.
Man, thinking back at that Philly game brings back sickening memories. What a brutal loss.
