Why do people keep asking this when the answer keeps coming back 'yes'?

That is my concern as well. In 2008 the Jays finished with 86 wins and the best ERA in baseball, and then proceeded to cut salary for four straight off-seasons after that.

The reality is, the payroll is only going to increase with backloaded contracts to Reyes, Buehrle, and Dickey (whose extension kicks in after this season, IIRC). If Rogers isn't ready to increase the payroll again in the event that the team happens to disappoint all 2013 season, then AA is going to have to get real creative to work around that. Hopefully Buehrle ends the season strong because he is the first guy I would move based on salary alone, but his contract is huge.

Yep, if they want to keep these players and maintain this kind of team, the payroll is going to have to increase. Will Rogers be prepared to do that if they fail this year? Pretty doubtful, though they surprised me with their commitment in the offseason and maybe they will again.

Would love to trade somebody like Buerhle, but that is going to be difficult to do even if he has a decent season.

To you maybe, but not to our team. April = extended spring training. They'll right the ship in May.

So, I missed the game today but it sounded like a carbon copy of the previous three. Pretty brutal we held a lead in every game and couldn't hold on once. Who were the culprits today? As far as I could tell, Dickey had no trouble until Michael Rappaport in the 7th. What about the offense? More of the same?

More of the same really. Dickey was great, except for two pitches and Boesch and Rappaport made him pay. Holding a team to 3 runs should be enough to win. But again, our offense was anemic. We'd get a hit every once in awhile, but had a tough time getting clutch hits. We did have an impressive string of 3 straight soft/bloop singles that led to one run. It was a nice change of pace from the solo HR offense.

I just don't like our approach at the plate. The starters have slowly started to turn around, and the bullpen has been fine so far. Our offense needs to stop trying to hit a homerun every at bat and try and get on a roll with base hits - try going the other way a bit more and manufacturing some runs
