does anyone here participate in competition (MMA or Boxing)
What's the name of the gym you train at and how long you been competing in bouts.
I represent World Wide Boxing Gym in the Bronx, 5-1 as a novice amateur in the 152 weight class. I started at 165 but went down in weight. Going to try to share some of my fights on here via youtube, feel free to post yours.

I don't but I think I will start training soon. Going to do kickboxing and BJJ when I get a chance. I don't think I would ever compete in real fights because I don't think my employers would like me walking around their office with black eyes and busted lips.
How do you deal with going to work after a long and grueling match where your face is a little busted?

Have fun with that, BJJ is a lot of fun, especially you meet a great team and supporting cast. They will push you to the next level and you will find levels of strength and abilities you never imagine before. Keep me posted when you do.
When I first started boxer, my trainer was this hardcore old school former professional from Southern Blvd in the Bronx, he threw me in there with professionals and 10 year amateurs and told me the only way I'll learn was by sparring. I was sparring 3 guys for 3 rounds, atleast 3-5 times a week. I tell you, I was afraid and I paniced often. I used street tactics because I didn't know how to box. I went home to my gf with a couple of bruises and even wanted to quit.
Next thing you knew I dedicated myself more and started running 5 miles in the morning, shadow boxing in the morning, doing pull ups, planks and push ups all before work and school and when I got to the gym I was more prepared and confident and really believe I had something to give in the ring. I spent the next 9 months being the one giving the ass whoopings in sparring and really working all the technique I learned.
I had to leave my trainer because he wanted me to fight at 165 and 178 (he didnt have any fighters at those weight classes, all his fighters were 152 and 140 guys) I normally fight at 152. He had me sparring big guys and I use to be in a lot of wars. I had my first concussion in my life and it was so severe I had to be hospitalized for a couple of hours and out of the boxing ring for 3 months. It happens to a lot of boxers, but I left my trainer and changed my style. I value movement, circling, angles and defense more than I ever did before. I use to rely on my jab and my power hand but i realize I was taking too damage when I didn't have to.
I do personal training so my clients know what I participate in. Thankfully to my change in style I don't get those black eyes I use to get by leaving my self open.
It's not a pretty sport once the results are finish, but theres no other feeling in the world than being in that ring with the lights on you going to combat with a fellow comrade of yours.

Cool story. We have a training thread on here from about a year ago where everyone shared their backgrounds, etc. Also had a lot of guys who said they were looking to get into training martial arts so I'd be curious if anyone followed through with it.
As for me, I'm way too big a wimp to allow myself to be punched in the face to do any striking art.

Great Story. Must be pretty cool to be in the ring with another guy trying to beat him. I have only been in a couple of fights my life and those were just quick and spur of the moment fights.
It will be a little tough for me as I am in the middle of an accounting designation. If I pass my first exam in May, I will have 6 months off until second year. I think I will try some BJJ during that time and then focus on school for that last year.
I was looking online and this looks to be a decent school close to me.
http://www.joslinsmma.com/
I might join for 3-6 months after my exam and then if I really like it join for a year next summer. It also has some kick boxing as well in there so that should be cool.

Re: does anyone here participate in competition (MMA or Boxi
I guess I could actually do BJJ tournaments as it is just submission and I am unlikely to get busted up from it.
I can't wait till I would be able to power through the white belts like nothing and start having a chance against blue belts. I am still young (23), so maybe if I really like it and stick it out, I have a chance to make black belt one day. If I don't like it too much, I can always try Karate or something. But I think BJJ will be good because I can go hard at it and not have to worry about my face getting hit too much.

There will be the occasional black eye & mat burn. It's not too bad.

Dude you should just do it imo. Everyone says they are going to but it seems to rarely happen. At least give it a go and see if you like it. Sooner the better, and keep us updated.

Yeah I think I will try it out in a couple of weeks after my exam. Take one week and go at least 4-5 times and if I really like it, join for 3 months and try to go as often as possible.

I've done a little bit of BJJ. Word of advice, its best to watch out who you roll with. Rolling with an inexperienced person can result in an injury(something might break)

You get used to it in about a minute.

Re: does anyone here participate in competition (MMA or Boxi
I had a great opportunity to do so, but had to give it up because of an old shoulder injury I sustained mountain biking in India while still a teenager. My boss in Denmark, where I lived for 7 years, was Martin Kampmann's classmate in school and he still trains like a mad man. He took me a couple of times to a gym where a lot of Scandinavian boxing champions train/have trained and I was blown away by just the work out. I'm a fit guy, and I was gyming 3-4 times a week for intense 90 minute sessions at the time (albeit, mostly weights and not cardio). I couldn't last even one sparring session at a fraction of their pace. Ridiculous endurance on these guys.
Anyway, my boss used to toss people twice his size out of bars back in the day - so he taught me a few tricks, but I really wish I'd been able for a lot more. Respect people who do.

See, I want to get punched in the face. Don't care if I never get to throw a punch-- I want someone to hit me in the face. I just don't want to do the jump rope and cardio stuff... which unfortunately I have to do before I can get hit. I want to suit up and have someone wail on me the first day.

Re: does anyone here participate in competition (MMA or Boxi
I was thinking of doing MMA training with a friend. He goes to this guy who was a decorated amateur wrestler, and the growth my buddy has seen in the year he was training is amazing. The guy is a friend that is basically teaching him for free at this point, and isn't just holding his training back to milk him for more money.
I trained a lot with a boxer when I was young, but I don't think I'm mentally prepared for hardcore MMA training. I'm just too lazy mentally to throw that in there with work/school or whatever. Just brings back basketball/football practice, which I hated, and felt like a grind.
I'd really like to. My step dad was raised in a very martial arts heavy family, and I know a lot more than the average person would stepping in on it the first day, but rolling with my friend that is currently training... my cardio for the ground game has a long way to go.
As for getting hit in the face.... doesn't hurt nearly as much as it sounds, lol. I'm one of those people that bruise up real easy(though I don't really cut), so it kind of sucks when I do anything like that, the lightest hits will make a mark on my face :/
I really should go. I know I could tag along for free with my buddy, and it would do wonders for my health and I'd love to add the skills to my boxing.

Fwiw I'm not even sure its possible to go and begin rolling and have good cardio to start. Its just such a weird activity, plus you have to control your breathing, deal with pressure, etc.

I was a distance athlete in the years going into BJJ so the cardio never really killed me. I remember my forearms burning like no other after my first few practices because of the grip strength stuff.

Well I thought I was in good shape when I started, but that notion was soon proven untrue.
I think learning the learning to relax and breathe thing was important for me though.

I started training with an ex pro boxer and another young guy in the old dude's garage. First day he layed into me a fair bit to see if i was actually serious about boxing. He figured if I got beat up and came back I wouldn't be wasting his time.
